  • As others said you can show up early to get extra miles OR socialize before the group run and stay out longer than others to get extra miles after. I've done both...sometimes on the same run (when others were only running 6 miles i would show up early to run a few and then finish up what I had left after.) I prefer showing…
  • When I decided that I loved to run. When I wasn't doing it for exercise or because I was training for something. When it became a part of me and I identified with it. This was before I completed my first half and at this point in my life, I have no intentions of ever attempting a marathon.
  • Funny that this came up today...i was just telling my husband last night that i am about to gain 5-10 pounds. I started training for my half 2 weeks ago and I am hungry ALL THE TIME. I haven't logged food in almost a year and I just can't get back into to, so I am probably going to gain a few pounds during this training. I…
  • Sounds good to me. Thanks Carson!
  • I did 2 halfs last year. That is my longest distance. I have not done any 10+ mile runs since December. I have done maybe a handful of 8 milers this year, but nothing above 6 miles in the last 3 months.
  • I would love to do that, but I haven't really seen anyone around my town doing it yet. It's already in the upper 90s here and I thought i would have seen it by now, but I just haven't. I would totally wear this to the gym, but outside where people who are not excerising are...i don't know. I am just waiting to see one…
  • I did a 5k at Turner Field this past Saturday. It started at 7:30am. It actually wasn't too bad, i didn't stop for water at all (of course it was half the distance so we were done before it got really hot). Even the one mile fun run with my son at 8:30 wasn't too bad. Good luck to you both. Stay cool!
  • Last summer after I raced a 5K on July 4th I promised myself I would never race during the summer again. However, if I happen to be in St. Simons again this 4th, I will definitely be running that race again. And I'm sure I'll say the same thing again after I finish. I've also signed up for a half in Atlanta at the…
  • The half marathon plan i am using has several long runs that include anywhere from 2-6 miles at race pace in the MIDDLE of the run. I'm guessing this provides a cool down period for the last part of the long run. Do you think I should do at least one of these long runs with the race pace miles at the END of the run to…
  • I quit running during the summer and it sucked trying to get going again. I promised myself i would not quit this year. I am already starting to get acclimated to it. I run in the evenings, about an hour before sunset. It's not much cooler, but some. I go slower if i need to and take walk breaks if I need to, but I won't…
  • I ran the Braves Country 5K Saturday morning. Not a PR thanks to Atlanta's hills, but I had not been running much so my last 2 5ks were dismal and this is getting closer to where I need to be. Finished in 30:02 and got to end on the warning track on Turner Field. Pretty cool! :)
  • i've only done 2 halfs...one was disney, so there was plenty of support for us at the back. The other i was recovering from a sprained ankle so i was at the back of the pack again. They did run out of cups for the water, so if you wanted any from mile 8 on, you had to just pour it into your mouth from the pitcher (which I…
  • Congrats on your PR! As a side note, all of my PRs have been set during "that time". I think I read that something about the hormone changes actually make you go faster. I will never skip a race for that reason! :)
  • I've noticed when I start thinking about my breathing is just about the time i start to struggle with my breathing. It's much better when I am not paying attention and just let my body figure out it's natural rhythm. That being said, I know I do breathe through my mouth, and sometimes when I start to pay attention and…
  • Not sure on Feed Zone, but I would trust anything from Skratch labs. Their Skratch drink is the best ever!! It's not heavy or sugary. I can drink it while running and be fine...and gatorade/powerade really turns my stomach. Good luck!

  • I have one! :) I HATE running in the heat. For the past 2 years I have pretty much given up on running during the summer. Once I have to take walk breaks I just get too discouraged and stop altogether. But this week, I slowed down my pace and pushed through when I wanted to walk and made it through 4 miles! And it wasn't…
  • I'm somewhere in between. I have all of the upcoming races written down in my calendar. I kind of know which ones I'm thinking about doing, but I rarely register in advance. I have 2 small kids and things just seem to pop up at the last minute. I'm usually a "show up the day of and register" kind of gal. I always prefer…
  • I let the excuses pile up in April with my work and getting ready for sister's wedding so I need to redeem myself in May. I will aim for 60 miles.
  • my store also has a 30 day return policy...i think you have to have the receipt, but they encourage you to try them out on a long and short run to make sure they will work for both...I know one girl in my running group was on her 4th pair of shoes still trying to find the right ones and never had any issue with the store.…
  • This is me. I live in a small town with lots of 5Ks for lots of different causes. It's pretty easy to find one I can place in...and I'm not very fast. In fact...I have only been in one race that I PR'd and did not place in my AG. That was the BEST DAY EVER!! I was so proud because it was the first time I broke 30 minutes…
  • We have a local race kind of like that. It's called the Retro Glo 5k/10k. It's a smaller local race, but they have christmas lights, christmas blow ups (it's actually held in October...lol!), music and d.j's along the course and all of the runners are wearing blinkies and glow bracelets. It's actually pretty fun. I didn't…
  • I have to have my phone or my ipod (for nike running app). That is the only thing I won't go without. I like to remember my garmin too, for accuracy, but I will run without it and just "trust" nike app if necessary. If I take my ipod, which is my preference if I remember to charge it, then I will take my headphones and…
  • Sounds like a solid plan and a good way to test your theory for a future 5k. Do you have a 5K goal race set already? They are so much quicker/easier to recover from, you could do another as a trial about 2 weeks out and test your theory on that specific distance and still be fine for your goal race. ETA: Good luck on…
  • 15K...we have one or two within driving distance, but I'd like to see more of them. I like the thought of a longer distance without having to run a half. I have done a 10 miler...i guess that's almost the same thing...15K just sounds more impressive, even if it is shorter. Also I wish we had more 10ks around here...it…
  • I'm not a pro at 5ks by any means...but I do run a lot of them :) I don't do anything differently 2 weeks out, but the week of I do not run at all the 2 days prior to the race. Not even one mile. If my race is on Saturday, I don't run Thursday or Friday. I just feel like my legs get a nice little rest and feel really…
  • I have 2 scenerios...the first is that feeling of euphoria you get on some runs where everything is going right and you feel like you are floating and could keep going forever. It's rare, but it's happened to me a handful of times and I thoroughly enjoy it. The second is what my husband classifies as runner's high (fwiw,…
  • Congruatulations!! That is an amazing time for your first 5k!!
  • That's what I do. I don't think I purposely treat it like a hill...it just happens, because it FEELS like running up a hill.
  • Glad I'm not the only one. I will just keep trying to go by feel on the tempo.
  • Thank you! And good luck to you on Saturday AlethaMary! :) That's a great goal and it looks well within your reach!
