  • I disagree with this completely. The specialty running store I go to has a $15 fee for fittings that is waived if you buy the shoes there. If the store really cared about it's associates' time being wasted, then they would institute this same rule. Besides...the "gait analysis" is not as impressive as they make it out to…
  • I had this issue when I started running. I held a jolly rancher candy in my mouth when I ran. It worked well and also gave me a little sugar boost. I'm not sure if my body adapted to mouth breathing or what, but the dry mouth thing doesn't happen anymore (unless I am actually dehydrated and really thirsty.)

  • I'm not a tenured expert, but I've always had an easier time racing on a hilly course. On a flat course you just have to keep pushing the same pace the entire time and it is difficult. Maybe it's just me, but I try to power up hills (even though I am actually going a little slower pace) and then I recover down hills (going…
  • 5ks are my favorite! To be able to push yourself for those 3 miles...it's exhilarating! 10Ks are my least favorite. I still feel the need to push myself to go "fast", but for twice as long...no thank you. Half is my longest distance and I haven't been well-trained going into one yet so it's still an uncomfortable distance…
  • I can only get about 250 miles out of most shoes...less if they are on the minimal side. I did stretch 260 out of my last pair of mizuno elixers but my knees did not appreciate it. That's my first sign that my shoes are getting ready to be done...the knee pain starts. I'm on the heavier side for a female runner (avg…
  • There is also a program called Bridge to 10K. It starts with the assumption you can already run a 5k (which you can), so you don't have to start with all of the walking at the beginning. But it sounds like all you would really have to do is maybe take a rest day once or twice a week and build your long run on whatever day…
  • I'm standing on one foot with and elastic band around the other. I do short kicks forward 15 times, to the side 15 times, and to the back 15 times while maintaining my balance on the other foot. (2 sets) I also stand on a step and do modified calf raises. I go up on both feet, but then lift one foot and only go down with…
  • This is why I am in PT right now. I sprained my left ankle twice in one year and the last one was a doozy. Apparently after you sprain something enough times or bad enough the ligaments never tighten back up so I have a "wobbly" ankle. That would be fine if it didn't ache all the time--even when walking. Oh well, the PT…
  • I am a "soulmate" for Girls on the Run, which means I am raising funds for their non-profit in conjuction with a specific race that I am doing. I got to pick the race and I set up a fundraising page online. We had the option to fundraise for our race entry also, but I paid for mine, so all of my fundraising went straight…
  • I agree with bodyglide. I have scars from before I realized I needed it. After the fact...it sounds weird, but diaper rash cream helps. Or if you don't have small kids around and don't want to buy diaper rash cream, aquafor will help some.
  • active stretching, ice, and compression sleeves. that's what I do when my calves are tight/sore.
  • First 15K yesterday--Hot Chocolate in Atlanta. 1:53:14. Either the course was a touch long or I need to get better at running the tangents. Garmin said 9.48miles. Oh the hills!! :/
  • I have 2 races coming up... Hot Chocolate 15K in Atlanta- 1/25 Sweetheart Run for Sight 5K- 2/14
  • Some stores will charge a small fee for their initial assessment (my LRS charges $15), but if you buy the shoes there, they will waive the fee. So if you are getting a great discount, it may be worth it to just pay for the assessment and shop elsewhere. However, the great thing about buying shoes at your LRS is the return…
  • Despite some advice to pass on this one, I finished my 3rd half marathon yesterday. I had done the same course last year undertrained because of an ankle sprain and it was miserable. As luck would have it, I sprained my ankle again this year and I lost 5 weeks of training, but with a much stronger base before the sprain…
  • I have been running for a little over 2 years. When I am not tripping over curbs or stepping sideways on rocks (i might be a little clumsy so I've had 2 sprained ankles during that time frame), I try to average around 20 miles/week. My longest race has been a half marathon. When training for a half my long runs go up to 14…
  • I agree if you choose to volunteer for anything, you are aware you are not going to earn any compensation and should not be entitled to it. However, there may still be some legal issues with the company itself. If it was enticing peope to volunteer by misrepresenting the amount given to it's sponsor charities, that could…
  • I don't know how motivating it is, but the one I will always remember and made me laugh the most was "Smile if you're not wearing underwear"
  • Thank you all for the advice. I forgot to mention that the same exact thing happened to me last year at almost exactly the same time...actually it was 2 weeks later last year. So I already know the complete and utter suckfest of running this exact same half undertrained. It was miserable. But I did have a much better base…
  • I have AthHalf on Oct. 19. I injured myself 5 weeks ago (high ankle sprain) and am just now able to run again. Hope I can get in a few miles before the big day, but not expecting a PR.
  • I'll echo the "don't go out too fast" and "get there early." But I think the one about having a good time is the most important. This is a first and you only get one of those ;) Enjoy it!!!! And smile when you cross the finish line!
  • I did it! 44:53 :) It was incredibly hard not to run but my ankle was bothering me and I didn't want to chance it. That's my slowest 5k time since I started running and one i am most proud of. You weren't kidding...walking fast without breaking into a run is challenging. I got a great leg workout today!!
  • do you think something like this would help with achilles bursitis? my ortho mentioned icing and and stretching, but it is always stiff after resting and/or sleeping.
  • Sorry the 5000 did not go well, but you had a great time in the relay (at least it looks great to me!) :) In fact...the whole effort looks amazing to me, but I appreciate you have your own goals to reach. Kudos for setting them and going for them!
  • Have you done this yet Dave? How did it go?
  • Good luck! :)
  • This one will be chip timed...but that is still a lot of dodging at the beginning if no waves. Could be worse though. The one I did last year had 1200 people and was not even chip timed and we all started together. Plus they had a small chute at the finish that got very backed up so people started going around and messed…
  • I have night race in Dunedin, FL on July 3rd/4th. Well, it's supposed to start at 11:25pm so I would hope to be finished before midnight, however with an estimated 1600 runners in just the 5K, I am guessing (hoping) they will have a wave start, so maybe not. Should be fun...i haven't done a night race in a while. I was…
