  • Do a reverse push-up. Start in a plank position - or modified plank on your knees - and slowly lower yourself down. You'll get better and better at it until you can do regular push-ups. I didn't do a *real* push-up until recently, at age 56.
  • You're right - January was tough. My two college student kids were home for three weeks of it, so we had different food in the house. It was way too cold for a Maryland winter. The path I walk was solid ice downhill, so no speed-walking. I was hungry all of the time. The gym was packed with annoying people who won't last…
  • It's a new experience and you need some confidence. That's all. How about this: Tell yourself that you are receiving admiring glances because people notice how toned and fit you are. They're trying to figure out what exercise you're doing, but don't want to seem forward. Good? When you wear baggy clothes, people wonder why…
  • What would you fill your bacon bowl with? Besides regret.
  • In my senior year, the cops raided cars in the parking lot. They pulled 22 people out for possession and handcuffed them together in full view of everyone. Three of them were teachers. It was like holding my breath for the rest of the year. I couldn't wait to get out of there.
  • If you've learned something about yourself that helps you succeed, good for you. That's the idea. Some of the details may not align with what others think, but they won't be living in your body. The general public doesn't distinguish between *addiction* and *habituation*, so addiction tends to be thrown around a lot. Call…
  • (about Kramer) "Don't feed him !! If you feed him he'll never leave!"
  • Howard County here! Just saying "hi".
  • I would do easy stuff like a brisk walk every day for starters. Save the *cool* stuff for later when you get bored. Whatever keeps you active is the right answer. Good luck and keep at it!
  • I was on ww and had lost 25 lbs. when they changed over to Points Plus. I immediately started to gain. The only way I could lose was to follow Adkins and count the points. That's like seeing how long you can hold your breath to me - not a good long term solution. My leader told me to double count ww points plus with MFP.…
  • My sister had it done several years ago. She got a couple of cookbooks like this one: http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/gastric-bypass-recipe-collection-lori-shiltz/1105735449. There are also recipes specifically for gastric bypass on sites such as sparkpeople. Google it. A lot of stuff comes up. The good cookbooks are…
  • 'Hope all of my American friends are having a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend. Happy Hanukkah to all who celebrate. And to my Canadian friends - let me tell you how jealous I am that your Thanksgiving is so much further away from Christmas on the calendar than ours! Cheryl/Kobie in MD
  • You can make a beautiful salad with an ice cream scoop of cottage cheese and another scoop of tuna salad on top. I like to eat it plain on whole grain crackers. It tastes like cream cheese and the crunchy goes well with the creamy. I also like to eat it with sliced fruit like dip.
  • I agree with all of the above. And, since I'm from New Jersey, "Dominic the Italian Christmas Donkey". I don't know if it's played anywhere else. Hopefully not.
  • I'm so proud of you! And thank you for the inspiration. I've been in a terrible "Why Bother??" funk all week. Thanks again.
  • They are probably into their workout and more than likely clueless to the barriers they are setting up for you. State clearly: "I'm going to use this." then do it. If all else fails, start putting tampons around to scare them away.
  • Snoozie - That's great news! Accept all graces, as they say. I hope that her recovery is swift and uneventful. Cheryl
  • I'm sorry I've been a bad friend these days. I'm taking a weight training class and spending the rest of my time at MD visits. I have a bone spur IN the joint of my big toe. The internist sent me to the podiatrist who sent me to the orthopedic surgeon who just gave me a referral to the Foot and Ankle Reconstruction Center.…
  • I'm a nurse and I agree with the article. I've seen several cases of MRSA in high school kids from the gym. We see several cases of ringworm a week in gym rats - especially people who use gym mats. Take a hot, soapy shower after you work out.
  • ^^^ This. I went through something similar with my family, but I'm the mom. I finally decided to do my best for me and to be a good example. I cooked healthy meals and kept fruit and healthy snacks in the house, but didn't make anyone eat them. They were supportive of me, but did their own thing at first. I knew I was…
  • I'm an RN. I had to be drug tested and pass a background check at my own expense to get my job. I just had to do another background check to renew my license. Again, at my own expense
  • I agree 100%. I always do more when I'm in a class. I can't seem to push myself as hard as the trainers who teach the classes.
  • I was on ww until they changed their plan. It doesn't work for me now. MFP tracking and online support groups are like ww. You can post questions and get lots of answers. Most of them are helpful. The difference for me was that I had to find what worked for me instead of blindly doing what I was told to do. I made mistakes…
  • I'm a school nurse. I'd like to see the demise of the "R" word. It's never meant well, no matter the circumstances.
  • I just realized that I hadn't seen ANY of the posts on the currant topic. Has it really been that long? School started, but the sub nurse business has been slow. I've been using the time to organize the house and hit the gym. My husband and I are eating clean - more fish and veggies than any of the kids would've tolerated.…
  • Almost 40 with two small children - are you just plain exhausted? That's more of an issue when you're older. I'm much older than you, so I know. My husband and I have four children. When they were small, we went away for a weekend and were lucky enough to have someone watch the kids. I slept the entire first day. I didn't…
  • The definition of an alcoholic is someone who drinks daily and cannot quit. They can even take a week off on occasion, but not quit entirely without help. It doesn't matter if it's one beer a day or a six-pack on the weekend. Your husband is clearly an alcoholic. I'm a nurse. I've seen the devastating effects of alcohol on…
  • Barbecue - six boneless chicken breasts, 1 bottle of barbecue sauce, 1 large can of tomatoes, 1 large onion quartered. Cook on low for 10-12 hrs. Everyone thinks it's pork. I also make this with a turkey breast but cook the turkey alone overnight. In the morning, I remove skin and bones and break up the meat then add the…
  • I feel you. I'm three years into this and only about halfway to goal. I've learned a lot, though. One thing that would have been good to know three years ago is this: If your daily goal is too low, you'll fall off the plan in a big way. I would eat too little and exercise too much then crash HARD. I could make it for a few…
  • We drove our daughter to grad school in Illinois last Wed. through Fri. Just got back from dropping our son off at U. Of MD. I was supposed to start back to work yesterday, but took two days off. Our two older daughters have birthdays this week, so we're taking them out to dinner then my husband has to travel for work…
