  • You are doing great! If you really want to discuss your plan with these people, tell them the truth. You are working toward a reasonable, healthy weight and want to do it in a sustainable way. It may not be the way x, y or z would do it, but it's working brilliantly for you. People like to give advice. Not that they'd be…
  • For me the key is not to go on any program, except the one MFP sets up. I've tweaked it a bit as I've learned, and track nutrients for health reasons (lower sodium, keeping track of calcium and cholesterol), but I don't deny myself anything. In order to keep within calories, I find that I have to watch refined carbs.…
  • Welcome! Add me as a friend, if you'd like!
  • Hmmm....never heard of it! I can see the joint inflammation part, as turmeric is supposed to help with that. I'd be careful talking about liver cleansing on the main forums. You'll get a screen full of criticism, mostly along the lines are that your liver cleanses itself and any kind of "cleanse" is a scam. Cheers.
  • Hello there. Welcome. I didn't see your post until this morning. You're right about not much activity here, but it's a good start to finding friend a for the news feed, and that is tremendously helpful! Cheers.
  • Yup...I worked in a school where things started to go missing out of lunch bags (we're talking paper ones, so it's a long time ago) and then progressed to parts of things, as in a bite out of a sandwich....ewww. Eventually, the perpetrator was caught, sadly suffering from a mental illness as It turned out she'd been…
  • Nicely done! Can't say I'm a match for the "cerebral master", but I'm a musical nerd...play the oboe...for fun.
  • There's such great advice here! Just want to say thank you to those who take the time to help, and that your remarks are tremendously encouraging. OP, I hope you find what you need here.
  • I find having a homemade soup (usually vegetable with some legumes, low sodium broth and tomatoes) on hand makes it less likely I'll grab something higher calorie for lunch. It's filling, healthy and easy to throw into the slow cooker every week. For me it gives more calorie leeway in planning dinner.
  • Nice post! You must be an awesome IRL as well as MFP friend. When I want a smile, one related to staying healthy, I revisit the MFP Fitspiration thread. Thank you so much for that one, too.
  • I tried this when someone posted it awhile back: If you'd like more accurate calorie burn numbers than those on the machines, the calculator on shapesense.com (net ones) comes out very close to the number on my HRM.
  • I don't find this at all, quite the opposite. Searching for raw foods is easy. Put a dash, comma, or USDA after the name of the food and usually an item with multiple measurements comes up first. Also, as the previous poster said, the recipe tool (the old one) is useful.
  • Welcome! Just a thought....check to see if you were measuring dry or cooked oatmeal. 500 calories sounds like a lot!
  • I wish we had a like button!! Congratulations. :)
  • Quoting this one because as wonderfully inspiring as ALL of these posts are, this one really encouraged me today. Thank you everyone!
  • We use it like rice sometimes because it's quick to prepare, and a change. You can make salads or pilafs...endless variations. Try the google recipe search. The pearl kind (Bob's Red Mill is what I can find) takes longer to cook, but we make a salad with it, plus some onion and celery, sliced black olives, feta cheese and…
  • I didn't totally fall off, but gained a few during a 5 week snowbird vacation. A few extra drinks and people around who snack constantly, plus a week long road trip eating out on the way home will do that. BUT, I knew what I was doing, and I know that I can't ever not pay attention to my eating and exercise. I'm getting…
  • Welcome! I've been on MFP for over two years. I just returned home from being away for almost six weeks and I'm ready to get on with the last 25 lb or so. Actually, I'm giving myself a week before I brave the scales because I know I'm up from my lowest. I try to keep logging in even if I'm not strictly counting so I…
  • I think it's hard to get much going here because the forums aren't on the apps and because it takes a bit of effort to navigate to here on the website. Don't forget to ask any questions you have on your home page, though.
  • Even without going "low carb" the first statement is accurate for me. In order to hit my calorie and macro targets (40% carbs) I have to pay a lot of attention to foods like bread and pasta and choose more vegetables and legumes.
  • I use tzatziki sauce as a substitute for mayonnaise (I actually like it better) in wraps and pitas and it makes a pretty good creamier dressing for a green salad, too. The brand I buy is 50 calories for 2 Tbsp., but it's pretty easy to make with some Greek yogurt and a few other ingredients.
  • Lots of good suggestions. Here's another one: put some meat (chicken, pork chop or tenderloin, or small beef roast) on a rack in a pan in the oven, along with a couple of baking potatoes and/ or sweet potatoes. With some steamed fresh or frozen veggies, voila...dinner. While it's cooking put your feet up and watch tv. If…
  • What I was trying to say was that opinions about what is best will vary widely, and people will find evidence to support their choices, Atkins or Paleo, vegetarian choices, or some balance of proteins, carbs and fats . You are obviously sure of your choices. On the main forums these discussions often go to long chemical…
  • "No human has ever developed chronic disease from eating plants". Perhaps, but that statement would suggest that no human who eats only plants develops chronic disease. I don't have evidence either way, but have difficulty believing that statement is true. I'm sure evidence could be found either way, too. This is the…
  • From the article: "So, case closed—don’t eat red meat? Sorry, nutritional science isn’t that simple." Also, human beings herbivores? I respectfully disagree. We are omnivores, and to paraphrase Michael Pollan, that's the dilemna. What should we eat? Of course, your dietary choices are yours and you have every right to…
  • My suggestion is to eat a piece of fruit. For me, if I have a cookie I want another cookie. If I have the fruit, I don't want more fruit and I don't want the cookie, either. Win, win!
  • OP you might find this website helpful: http://www.metric-conversions.org
  • Is your sister weighing and measuring what she's eating? She can, of course, eat whatever she wants, but if the goal is to lose weight, I believe a nice piece of lean steak (3 or 4 oz) and some vegetables, even a small potato, would be much more satisfying than the same calorie count in pasta.
  • I agree that the main boards are...shall we say "interesting"? That said, there are lots of things to learn there just by reading, and if you do read, and do searches of topics you are interested in, you'll find that the same things come up over and over, and the responses are pretty predictable. I could make a long list…
