Heart rating is a great method, but for the time being you could also google the amount of calories burned based on your weight, height, etc. You know how hard you worked... pools of sweat means WORK, and light sweat means average :-) By the way, Taebo is awesome! Good luck. :-)

Be happy and appreciate your current weight! Take things slowly. Drink more water. Incorporate more fruits/veggies. Get more sleep. And be as active as possible. Oh and be HAPPY, the happier you are the higher your metabolism. Good luck! :-)
