  • I hope so. My doctor says I just need to be patient and that the biggest risk of a plateau is getting discouraged and giving up or radically changing your diet. He says just wait some more. doug
  • And up even more today, to 96.8 kg. :( This is getting depressing. I'm staying within my calorie limit (as prescribed by both my doctor and MyFitnessPal). I'm doing daily exercise. Yet my weight this morning is now back to where it was on February 2. I don't know what's wrong. The "eat more" people are clearly wrong I…
  • I spoke with my doctor just yesterday actually about my diet. He said it's normal to plateau for a couple of months no matter what diet you are on and that the biggest risk is people giving up or switching to something else because of impatience. He urged me to just stick with what has/had been working for almost 300 days…
  • The suggestion of adding more calories is clearly not working. Another week of weight gain. I'm up to 96.6 kg now - the same weight I was on February 1!!! 6 weeks of dieting wiped out. Sigh. I think I have to eat less and/or exercise more. There is just no getting around conservation of energy. Half the people I have asked…
  • Hi, Giddy. Well this "eating more calories" isn't working. This morning I'm up over 96 kg again - to 96.2 kg! I've been using the fixed goal of 1800 calories a day recommended by my doctor. But since you asked, I just went into MFP and did a "guided goal" with my current weight and my goal weight of 75 kg with their…
  • It seems strange to add more and more calories to try to lose weight. :) Anyway, in answer to the question I've added enough to eat about 1700 calories a day. One day I actually ate 2,000 calories! The net calories were just 1750 though with exercise. I'm going to see how this goes for another week. But people, let's…
  • Well, adding calories hasn't hurt in the week since I've tried it. But it hasn't helped either. Still just fluctuating between 95.2 and 95.8 kg. doug
  • Thanks for your notes, people. Preesy, you seem to be doing extremely well! I'm sort of hoping that it's turned into one month plateau followed by one month loss. I can live with that pattern. About my dietary restrictions, I'm on the Ornish "heart disease reversal" plan (almost exactly the same as the Caldwell Esselstyn…
  • According to the BMR calculator at http://www.bmi-calculator.net/bmr-calculator/metric-bmr-calculator.php my BMR is 1870 calories/day. Since adding a few hundred calories a day this week I'm right about at that. Well, I'll give it another week or so to see what's happening. doug
  • Gained 0.4 kg this past week. Sigh. Eating more seems to just add a bit more weight every day. Common sense. doug
  • Well, I'll try to eat more and see if that helps. But starvation mode isn't supposed to kick in until under 1,000 calories per day. Anyway, I'll add some extra tofu or something with protein in it to add a few hundred calories a day and see if that (despite what seems like common sense to me) actually sparks weight loss…
  • I've gained just a little bit of muscle from resistance training. Nothing to write home about. I haven't taken any measurement. I do have to lose like another 20 kg though! doug
  • Oh, my total weight loss since last May has been 73 lb by the way. doug
  • Thanks, everybody! And yes, every little loss does add up over time. So you might as well stay on your diet. Now that I finally broke through the 100 kg barrier (into the 96s) I don't feel pressured or rushed anymore. I'm already looking pretty normal (see http://lerner.net/i-think-its-time-for-another-haircut/) even…
  • I'm especially glad if my diet can be an inspiration to someone else! doug
  • Glad to hear that! You have to figure, time is passing regardless, so even if the weight comes off slowly, eventually it does come off, so might as well eat healthily (and even do some exercise) in the meanwhile. doug
  • Of course I weight myself every morning after going to the bathroom. :) doug
  • I started on May 19, so it's been about 33 weeks so far. doug
  • Funny. :) doug
  • That is amazing. And you look great. doug@realizing that no matter how much weight I lose I will never be 18 again :)
  • You might be right about more intense, even if shorter sessions. The last few week I've I've increased the speed of my indoor exercise cycling, keeping a higher heartbeat throughout, even though I reduced the minutes. I have seen a steady drop all week, and this morning I was excited to see a new low on the scale. Exactly…
  • Today is my usual Friday weigh-in day. No weight change from last week where I had a 1.3 lb weight gain from the week before. Although it is my lowest weight of the week. doug
  • Thanks for your notes, people. John - you are almost at your goal, so it makes sense for weight not to change much. DoingItWell - yes, at least I'm not gaining much. Sarah - I seem to be having similar patterns to you. Do you just stick with it and wait it out? Thanks, doug@no change since yesterday
  • And another weight gain of 0.2 kg for the morning of January 1, 2013. So I now weight exactly what I did on December 1. Disappointing way to start the new year. This morning I'm up again to 101.4 kg. I'm still skeptical that "eating more calories" is the way to lose more weight. If I gain too much weight I will reverse…
  • Happy New Year kcoftx! Whereabouts in Japan are you? I'm in Tokyo. About water - I just drink plain old triple-filtered water I get in jugs at the supermarket. doug
  • Well, you're right of course. It was just... well... so close! But of course I have to let go of the hoped-for timeline now. After all, it's just 5 hours to 2013 here in Tokyo. Time to look forward rather than backwards. I can moan and complain some more starting in the new year. :) Thanks, doug
  • Well, a disappointing end to 2012 in some respects. My weight ticked up again yesterday and I ended December 31 at 101.2. That's just 0.2 kg down from what I weighed on December 1. It feels like a whole wasted month. And I wasn't able to break through 100 kg by the end of the year. Nothing to do but go on and see how…
  • Since so many people have mentioned TDEE here are the results of calculating my TDEE from different sites: http://www.iifym.com/tdee-calculator: 2789 http://thefitgirls.com/tdee-calculator.aspx: 2323 http://scoobysworkshop.com/calorie-calculator/: also 2323…
  • Joylia wrote: "This leads us all to try to give you suggestions which you just shoot down." I'm sorry you feel I'm shooting down all suggestions. Since I'm actually taking some suggestions I guess I disagree with your assessment of that. It's impossible to take all suggestions and agree with everybody though, since some…
