Haha. No - I am not going to also do low carb. I'm just pointing out that rice is a lot of empty calories and triggers hunger spikes. So I have to find more satisfying carbs to replace it. doug

Been there done that too. Lost a LOT of weight. I got down to 79.8 kg after 700 days. This was in 2006. But then "something" happens after 700 days and I just start rebounding. It doesn't matter the diet. Weight Watchers, what you suggested, Ornish's heart-disease reversal problem (the vegan, no oil, no nuts) thing. No…

I really don't know anymore what maintenance is for my goal weight. I've never been at my goal weight my entire adult life! I would guess from my current metabolism it's probably around 1600 calories though at goal. Not much.

Very nice to meet you, Joanie. Yes, we do seem to be at similar crossroads, though you are not nearly as heavy as I am. I was at my lowest adult weight when I was dieting and had a dog to walk multiple times a day. I agree it's mostly food, but exercise helps with overall strength and vitality at least. Rumor has it that…

I was on vegan + low calorie for 700 days from mid-2012 and lost 40 kg and got plenty of protein. I've also been on just low calorie eat-whatever-I-want for 700 days in the past and lost about the same. I understand that for losing weight all that ultimately matters is the calories. But what you eat also can make you feel…

Well, I went off again. I'm starting a separate thread on this. Please check it out and thanks people!

5 days in a row now of being very good with calories and exercise. Even this morning when I'm rushed to go to my Sunday volunteer work. And almost 2 kg of my recent rebound reversed. I have to stay on this!
-
And I'm finished eating for the day, and managed to stay under my goal (net calories after exercise just 1310) for 3 days in a row now. I'm hoping I'm somehow getting back into the zone. I feel diminished urges to eat something bad. Things I've been eating: salads with non-oil dressing, some fruit, some nuked pumpkin…

I was also good yesterday. And did even more exercise. But I actually gained weight. :( Yes, I know, daily fluctuations are meaningless. Still, disappointing. But I will try not to let it discourage me today. On the positive side, this is my 1300th consecutive day of logging here at MyFitnessPal!
-
And this morning I saw a blessed 1.4 kg drop on the scale, which means a substantial amount of the recent gain was probably water gain which dropped off as soon as I cut back on all those grains and sugars. So I am psyched for today.

My HbA1c is back to normal now. I think it was a combination of a new blood sugar med I take every morning plus trying really hard to avoid eating excess sugar.
-
Well, I managed to finish today with a net of only 1342 calories, after exercise, which I also did for the first time in a long time. If every day could be like today there would be no problem.

Yes, weight loss is definitely more about food than exercise. Yet... a few hundred calories in exercise a day can't hurt. That's a few potential bananas I could eat as a snack. I'm not sure what happens in the late afternoon. Today was ok. I did my walk along the river for the first time in a long time, and stuck with…

Well, it's almost lunch time and I've been good so far. :)

Thanks again for the suggestions people. I agree with most everything written except the idea of regaining all I've lost! I just can't do that. That would be the worst thing ever! About exercise - I've certainly fallen off the wagon with that. I used to cycle along the river every day. I've barely done any exercise at all…

I do need to absolutely stay away from at least sugary things. I'm insane if I buy another blueberry maple scone from the corner store. I don't even like maple! What's wrong with me?!
-
Thanks again for all your messages people. I agree with what you all wrote. Unfortunately, depressingly, I had another bad day today. I started ok.. but "something" has been happening around 4 or 5 pm and I just go off calories. By a lot. I'm afraid to see the scale tomorrow morning. But I just can't let a complete rebound…

I think you are right about losing just a bit each week. Over the long run it's good. But I recognize that bread and rice and sugar seem to be (1) very unsatisfying as far as filling me up and (2) trigger foods which actually drive more cravings. So inside a "reasonable" plan of calorie counting to lose moderately each…

I go to sleep thinking, "I can eat again tomorrow!" I have to get food out of my mind. Interestingly enough I went on a 5 week trip to the U.S. recently and came back 5 lb lighter! I was just so busy I couldn't stay home and "graze" all day. doug
-
I am. That's why I'm so depressed about this. But you are right. doug

Yes, there is no point in sugar coating (as it were) the truth. I have to find it within me to get back to "healthy mode." What I always can't fathom is that for two whole years in each of these cycles I am not tempted to stray from strict calorie control at all! But then something just seems to fall apart. I think it is…

This is like the 10th time I've been through this! I really though this last time was the charm. But "something" always happens 2 years into a diet and I start rebounding. My only consolation is that I've managed to avoid a total rebound until now. But I'm disappointed with how fat I've gotten again. :( doug

Thank you for all your messages. I can't really disagree with what any of you wrote. Even though I was vegan the last go-round I think what was written above, "Eat no sugar no breads no rice / carbs only from fruit and veggies . Fresh lean protein" is probably true for me. The sugars, breads, rice (grains in general) seem…

Oh - good news about the caffeine I'm needing the past week or two. I called both Coca Cola and Kirin (the makers of my favorite green tea, Namacha) and it turns out Namacha actually has more caffeine than Coca Cola Zero! In one 500 ml PET bottle, Coca Cola Zero has 50 mg of caffeine while Namacha has 65! Plus Namacha has…

Thanks for the extra notes, people! As far as low-carbing goes, I have given it serious tries. It is just impossible for me to stay within a reasonable calorie limit when doing that though. I admit low-carb, higher protein foods are more filling. So I'm not saying carbs should be ignored. I recognize that some high…

Webmester, I watched the video. There are some things I agree with, and with which my doctors also agree. Mainly that type 2 diabetics is reversible. When my HbA1c is normal, my doctors do tell me I do not have diabetes. The video was extremely repetitive though. He kept on saying the same thing over for the first 8…

Hi Hearts, Thanks for your note. I don't have any testing strips or a testing device. My doctors here all say the only thing that really matters is the HbA1c anyway. The actual glucose level goes up and goes down. But the HbA1c measures long term trends. And it is the final arbiter of whether you are diabetic or not. I had…

Thanks for your replies so far. Jillian, yes I do have a dietician I talk to regularly at the hospital I go to. Doesn't help. She doesn't know anything I don't already know. I don't really get tired of water. But I've been very tired in the afternoons lately and I notice some Diet Coke helps get me awake again because of…

And then there are the daily scale fluctuations to contend with. This morning's weight was 1 kg higher than yesterday's! Oh well. It will be down again.

Yes, I agree. And without blood sugar medication too. It's a vitally important stat, because so many other health problems are caused by high blood sugar. The list is too long to mention. What's interesting is that the key to getting this under control was simply losing weight. It didn't matter that some of the foods I eat…
