  • Oats, nuts and often dried fruits are the main components. Add to that the fact that most granolas are "bound" by honey or another type of sugar, and you get a food that is very calorie dense. If you want to have some that's fine, but just remember that a little goes a long way. IMO there is just way too much of everything…
  • DON"T skip a workout. I always try to get in a long run the mornings before holiday meals. But DO skip foods that you can eat any time of year. If you indulge, indulge in "seasonal" stuff. And usually a bite or 2 will take care of it!! You don't need to eat the whole thing. And while on that subject, some great tips from…
  • It's just a plan, and it's your plan, so adjust it however you want. I couldn't do the speed intervals as indicated when I first started running, but I made it happen over time. If you don't want to go much/any further than the 5k distance don't. But don't sell yourself short either. I was stuck around 3 or 4 miles for a…
  • runnersworld.com has free programs - look under tools and then "Smart Coach." Just print up your plan, and make your notes on there. They also have a free app that you can dowload to an iPhone. I like their programs and will be using one yet again to get ready for my 3rd half marathon. A lot of people like Couch 2 5k…
  • It was pretty darn good: excellent taste profile. You definitely can skip the added "sugar" and just drizzle honey on top if you want it a bit sweeter. I did think it was a little dry, so I'll probably add some extra milk next time.
  • "if you go more than 3 days without working out, it's like starting over" - definitely one of the more ridiculous pieces of "advice" I have heard. Recovery days are just as important as exercise itself. Why don't you exercise on weekends? Move one of your "off" days to Wednesday when you really need it, and then pick up…
  • I just bought a MIO Lifestyle watch/HRM yesterday. I don't have it yet, so I can't provide any specifics. It usually runs about $70, but I had a Schwaggle offer (like a groupon, but it's from Active.com and for exercise related gear) so I got it for $35 + shipping. I was looking for something that was simple to…
  • Why not make your own? TONS of great vegetarian/vegan soup recipes out there. And they freeze really well.
  • Completely agree about MFP being a bit high. I have been toying with finally getting an HRM, but I like the idea of using an average burn of 10 cal/minute for simplicity. I already pare down my exercise calories, and this would probably be even more conservative. but that's not a bad thing. Great idea!!
  • Yep...cauliflower is great roasted too!! As are brussels sprouts. Broccoli is my hubby's favorite veggie!!
  • I use runkeeper too. I find that it depends on the activity I am doing (usually MFP is higher), but I ALWAYS go with the lower number to allow for some wiggle room. But I don't have the HRM (Wahoo) add-on that goes with it. I am looking at it now, and once I get that, I will be going with that #.
  • Yep...go with your HRM!!
  • I am the same height and age as you. And unfortunately, WHAT you eat to hit that calorie count plays a much more significant role in weight loss than it may have if we were 20 years younger. 20 years ago, i could have eaten just about anything, and as long as I stayed in my calorie range, I would lose weight. These days I…
  • I saw Pearl Jam years ago. They were great but what I remember most is no lines for beer or the women's room since most everyone was under 21 and male :-) I personally wouldn't worry about the extra calorie burn.....
  • Daily: at least once in the AM and once in the PM. But you can't do this if you obsess about the day to day variance on the scale. I take my "official" weight every Friday. I am not one of those people that can go without weighing myself. That's how I got to the point that I did. And now that I have lost 50#, I want to…
  • Some great stuff. But if I had gotten this type of advice when I first started running, it would have scared me off completely!! I didn't need anything to tell me to slow down: my body did that just fine on it's own:-).
  • Yep!! Most people just try to do too much too fast. They wind up discouraged or think that they can't do it. One of the best pieces of advice I got as a new runner was not to worry about time, just go the distance. I know a lot of people like C25K but there are other programs out there and maybe one of those will work…
  • Unfortunately it often becomes more about WHAT you eat. So yes, someone can eat the same foods and calories as you and lose weight, while you "bobble" around. I used to be able to eat pasta w/no problem and still lose weight. I can't do it anymore. I can eat the same amount of calories, all from healthy sources, but get…
  • One word....water. If you have drastically changed your diet, the bulk of the weight you initially lose is good old H20. Especially the first couple of weeks. It will slow down.
  • Can you lose weight just walking? Absolutely. Is it the best? That's subjective...but anyone can do it and you have to start somewhere. I used to walk all the time, but as I got older it just wasn't enough. I love what I do now....long bike rides w/hubby, running, and I am a newly christened triathlete. I never even…

  • If you are getting 24, I would consider those mini muffins.
  • I started a thread on this the other day... One of the best pieces of advice I ever got is to skip the stuff you can get year round and enjoy "seasonal" treats instead. So that means I pass on things like mashed potatoes, bread, mac and cheese, etc. I can get all of that at any time. And quite frankly, I don't eat a lot of…
  • Please be careful, and don't confuse endurance wtih muscle conditioning. Using an elliptical and running are 2 completely different exercises. Running 4 miles out of the gate, without running at all, is a great way to injure yourself. Lots of people try to do too much too fast and only end up hurting themselves along the…
  • I bought some of that last year....MUST NOT BRING IT INTO HOUSE!!
  • That's a ridiculous statement. I am pushing 50 and have NO running related issues. We are all gonna die some day!! And if I do it doing something I love, I'm Ok with that. To the OP: It could be that he is just not a fan of P90x...we are all entitled to our opinions. What you didn't say was how long you have been doing it.…
  • I have heard nothing but horror stories from people that try to change their natural gait. They all wound up with nagging injuries, that went away when they went back to their natural stride. That doesn't mean you can't work on overall form though. Lots of people love the 5-"finger" shoes. I have not tried them out, but I…
  • Probably "clogging" up message boards due to sheer volume of posts too. Takes a lot more space w/a signature than without.
  • Are you making mini muffins? There are a few caloric differences regarding brands of cake mixes, but I have checked a lot of them, and the cake mix alone was well over 100 cals. If you have found a lower cal mix, I would love to know about it. I make these muffins all the time when I am in a pinch: 12 muffins @ 172…
  • There is a thread right here on MFP that is loaded with ideas and recipes. Everything from breads and muffins, to oatmeal, risotto, chili, etc. http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/343589-if-you-re-a-pumpkin-lover And someone mentioned "skinnytaste." A friend of mine recently posted this link:…
