  • Back hyper extensions draw a lot of work from the lumbar and gluteals.
  • The first 10 came off quick (after 5 more gained from starting more exercise), the last 5 was tough. I was stagnant through the fall/ winter. A pending divorce took away my interest in drinking beer. I lost the last 5 in the 3 weeks. I hit my goal of 40#'s down this morning. I think I can do another 10 more if I care to…
  • I commute across Nashville most days by bicycle. There's not much room for me to carry a hot meal on the bike. That keeps me safe. I get 10 miles across town faster on the bike than I would driving. Not to mention, I don't want to wander around a market / resturaunt in my lycra superhero outfit. 1 pound to go!
  • Everyone, everywhere, will find some sort of fault with HRM's. Shut up and exercise. Work hard, listen to your body, rest when you feel tired.
  • If it helps you mentally, it helps you physically. The placebo effect can be helpful. Don't make this stuff to hard for yourself.
  • I get my miles in back and forth to work. I will get in a 20 mile commute 3 to 4 times a week. I will try and stretch one of those rides into a 35 mile long commute once a week when I can. Tennessee isn't as cold as some of the spots y'all are at, but it gets miserably damp through the fall / winter. November is the make…
  • Your body needs the extra calories to rebuild / recover. If you don't replenish most of your calories lost to exercise, your body will shut down to starvation mode. It will hoard fat and you will become tired / listless. Its the same as a starvation diet, it never works. Somedays, however. Afer a long duration, vigorous…
  • Wxercise does not cause an unhealthy deficit. The only key to remember with exercise, it that "rest makes you stronger". You need to get a rest day after a few honest days of exercise to let your body recover and rebuild. I tend to let myself go a little over my target calorie range on a rest day so I can feed my body. I…
  • I'm Ron Burgandy?
  • Cleanses are stavation diets. You give yourself some light calories for your body to survive, but your body doesn't get the protein it needs, so it digests muscles and organs so the brain can go about its daily life. Working muscle burns the calories, cleanses make you lose the muscle. You get momentarily skinny, and you…
  • I commute 10 miles each way 3 to 4 times a week. A couple days a week I will stretch it out to a 35 or 40 mile trip. You will feel better mentally on the days you ride. Do it for that. The benefits on your diet will be a secondary bonus. The bike is the primary tool for my weight loss, I don't count calories. MFP does help…
  • You can drop your intake and your activity, your body will do ok. However, your brain desires calories any way it can get it. If it doesn't get enough food, your body will digest itself to feed the brain. There is no way around that. That is why so many people who do "cleanses" lose muscle mass. You keep your body barely…
  • Exercise is addictive. It releases seratonin just like a lot of drugs ( or food). YOu have to find something aerobic and vigorous that you can easily fit into your day.
  • Polar (F4 or F7 are good), or Suunto's m series. Both will be very accurate and high quality. You will look to spend around $100 to 150. These HRM's will also help track your performance and let you know if rest is needed. YOu cannot improve fitness without rest.

  • heart rate monitors are fairly accurate. It can depend on how deeply you program it. Many basic HRM's will calculate calories based off of the generic rate of 220 bpm minus your age for a workable range. Some of the better HRM's (Polar, Suunto) are able to learn how your body works and adjust more specifically. All in all,…

  • Don't torture yourself. High activity helps. I do alot of vigorous bicycling. Some days I rest. Rest days, I am often over my limit, but I don't worry about it. The active days over-run those extra calories. Forcing yourself into hunger will only make you crack. Make sure you keep yourself happy.
  • These cleanses will clean your insides out. Go back to a few days of rough eating and you will clog back up. Go ahead and do it if you want to look good in a special outfit for a night out. Cleanses don't last if you don'y change your diet away from sludgy food.
  • I do agree with the idea of bad shoes. They wear out faster than we realize, plus many "specialty" running / walking shoes on the market are built around us striking our feet to the ground the wrong way. Eveolution - wise, walking upright makes running diffucult, we are generally not designed to do it. There is an option…
