I have a Sportline watch with HRM and it counts calories... Does anyone else have this? I just used it while I was cleaning my house... for 30 min. and it said I burned 532 calories....... It doesn't seem right to me. Is this accurate or bogus?? I need input please! :)

Does it have a chest strap? If not it is useless for counting calories burned even though it gives you a number. Also remember that HRMs are only meant to calcuate calories for cardio exercise.

I have the sportsline with chest strap and that seems VERY excessive. I burn 210-ish calories doing 25 minutes of Jillian Micheal's 30DS which is pretty intense for me.

heart rate monitors are fairly accurate. It can depend on how deeply you program it. Many basic HRM's will calculate calories based off of the generic rate of 220 bpm minus your age for a workable range. Some of the better HRM's (Polar, Suunto) are able to learn how your body works and adjust more specifically. All in all, you might not be too far off. Housework hits alot of muscle groups and will work you good. Using the HRM can be pretty entertaining and motivating.

It doesn't have a chest strap, no.. It's just a watch. I picked it up at walmart for $28

I ran yesterday for an hour and burned 670 calories, which sounds accurate right? but cleaning for 31 minutes and burning 532 cals seems like too much.. I'm confused!

Without the chest strap it really is just guessing at your heart rate, and thus is guessing at your calories burned. Sorry to say that.

Polars are pretty much the most popular and the slightly better ones let you change your VO2Max which is important to help in the calorie calculation to make it more accurate. I have a sportline with a chest strap. Basically the guidelines are chest strap, ability to enter age, height, weight, sex, max heart rate. VO2Max makes it even better. I have heard that the Timex one do not all the entering of sex, and are set up for men, so they over calculate calories for women. This is a helpful post one HRMs http://www.myfitnesspal.com/blog/Azdak/view/the-real-facts-about-hrms-and-calories-what-you-need-to-know-before-purchasing-an-hrm-or-using-one-21472

Polar (F4 or F7 are good), or Suunto's m series. Both will be very accurate and high quality. You will look to spend around $100 to 150. These HRM's will also help track your performance and let you know if rest is needed. YOu cannot improve fitness without rest.
