  • i'm doing my first-ever scale-free weight loss program, and lo and behold i'm losing more weight -- as evidenced, say, by clothing fit -- than ever before, plus feel WAY better about myself. everybody's needs are different, but i'm counting calories and exercise, then just estimating weight loss based on that data ... >>>…
  • seems to be something that's easier to prevent than to fix. i have had good luck preventing with a combination of super-hydration, heavy moisturizing, compression garments, and not losing that fast to begin with (lol)
  • today is day 1 of me finally taking back control over the exact same situation. i had lost 32 pounds but found it almost impossible to maintain, and so when i gained first 7 and then 10 pounds back i barely cared, but then i also stopped exercising regularly and finally realized i'd let myself sneak back up to almost 15…
  • i don't understand why people say that because weight fluctuates you should only weigh yourself once a week. it's a logical fallacy: if we've all just agreed that our weight might go up and down, say, 5 pounds over the course of the week, then there is absolutely nothing about weighing yourself once a week that will…
  • i've been having the same problem since november -- basically the plateau from hell. i lost 30 pounds, then i stopped and have been oscillating back and forth between the same 3 pounds or so, up and down. i did change my exercise routine, but i've lost most of my willpower regarding the diet. i'm even considering just…
  • mine fluctuates that much also, but i think that is unusual. sodium's a no-brainer as an important influencing factor, but i've noticed that the single biggest influence for me is flour-based products -- if i've eaten anything like that the day before, my weight will be at least 5 pounds higher the next day. this is not…
  • water, fresh fruits, and fresh vegetables are essential not only for weight loss but in fact for life, especially for growing and impressionable children.
  • There are certain characteristic types of post-yoga pain that tell us we weren't doing the postures right, like sore neck muscles and definitely wrist pain. Make sure you're putting your weight in your fingers (you shouldn't be able to lift them off the floor at all), but I agree with others that you should also go see a…
  • I used this site to calculate calories for intermediate and advanced pilates (they have beginner, too): www.healthstatus.com/calculate/cbc
  • I agree with slighting scale that formerly 'solid fat' areas can start to look 'mushy' when you lose. Hopefully it goes away eventually. I have noticed this especially on my stomach, which used to be firm but fat and is now thin but mushy. I am hoping when it gets thinner it'll finally be firm again, and a much better kind…
  • dates wrapped in prosciutto is the yummiest; my friend found the idea in a diabetic cookbook. add some coarsely-ground black pepper to punch it up!

  • At a certain point I realized that my success would depend on recognizing the fact that I am a late-night eater, period, and making room for that fact. Some (bad) habits can be overcome, but others are so fundamental that imagining a future without them is nearly impossible. Given my lifelong passion for late-night eating,…
  • your boyfriend sounds disturbed. if he's trying this hard to control you now, how will it be after decades of wedded bliss?! i agree with the above comments that this is NOT about the ice cream.
  • The Wild Rose cleanse is great & you can buy it from most health food stores.
  • I'm so sorry about your mom. I can only imagine how horrible that must be. It seems to me that it's much more important for you to take care of yourself, generally, than specifically to focus on weight loss at a time like this. Could you look into some kind of grief counselling for now and see where things go from there?…
  • i really appreciate the words of encouragements; thanks a lot!
  • my god you're AMAZING!!! i'm also 7 months in to my new life, and likewise halfway to my goal weight, but in my case it's only a loss of 21 pounds! so you've lost more than 3 times as much as me in the same amount of time -- fantastic work!

  • i don't care enough to reduce my sodium, but one thing to keep in mind is that sodium can interfere with potassium levels, and potassium levels are apparently essential to losing weight and/or maintaining a healthy weight. this problem is different from water rentention, which is obviously temporary.
  • Azdak I think your post was very intelligent and I can relate to your ambivalence. In fact, I'm so squeamish about the politics of weight loss and the changing vicissitudes of conversation when someone who's lost or gained a lot is in the room that I decided I didn't want to lose my weight too quickly. Instead I am going…
  • one cleanse diet is the Wild Rose cleanse, which you can find online. it involves eating no sugar, no tropical fruit, nothing with any vinegar in it, nothing made with any flour from any grain (ergo no crackers, pasta, tortillas, etc., and obviously no bread), nothing fermented, no oily nuts (almonds are good), and no…
