  • My son is 8 and on spectrum. He is really into nutrition and we talk about how you need protein at every meal and veggies at lunch and dinner, and not too much sugar, etc. So even though he would prefer to live off sugar alone, luckily his "rule follower" personality works in our favor! He has developed a list of 10…
  • There is a medical name for it, but it's escaping me at the moment. It's is common and unfortunately I think typically there isn't much change without surgery but hopefully someone else can pipe up and prove me wrong. I have two kids and no c/s and have a decent bit of loose skin in the belly. It stinks but oh well. In my…
  • Here is a list of our dinner plans this week (we are vegetarian but you can make meat versions): Taco night (I tend to have a taco salad) Black bean soup with bread (more bread for kids, less for me) Grilling night (veggies) with quinoa. I skip the quinoa depending on how hungry I am. Tofu noodle soup (like chicken noodle…
  • I have two kids, elementary age. I know it's harder with teenagers who wolf down 2000 calories just at dinner :) We make one meal. There is always a vegetable side dish (usually salad or a steamed veggie). H and I typically eat more of the veggies and less of the main dish if it's high calorie. The kids will sometimes eat…
  • I will ditto the pp who said to walk more at work. Walk to the furthest away bathroom, etc. I am a pretty active person, and I typically hit ~10,000 a day. I also always go on at least a short walk every day. I'd you aren't, I would encourage you to add a 20-30 minute walk daily.
  • In the car! I'm not moving, and for me it's easy to grab when I get to where I'm going.
  • I log pool time as swimming, but only lig half the time. I am working harder in the water than in land, but obviously not as hard as lap swimming. To compare for accuracy, MFP has a leisure swimming entry I think.
  • Call local hospitals (or Google) and find a diabetes educator. They can be either a nurse or dietician. They do small group intro classes and one on one counseling. Typically the nurses handle complicated stuff, like if you need to be on an insulin pump. For now, keep a food log, and check your blood sugar before and after…
  • Cook your food in oil. That'll increase your calories and improve nutrient absorption.
  • Stuff like tomato sauce is acidic and can go a few weeks. Soup always seems fine for a week. Plain grains (pasta, rice) have never spoiled before a week for me. Just kind of depends on if it looks/smells OK.
  • Agree, two separate pans. Bummer!
  • I'm lazy so I typically make up a vinaigrette because I never plan in advance for something fancier. Glass jar Fill up 1/3 with oil 1/3 with whatever vinegar I have around Squirt of mustard if I feel like it Little salt and pepper About a tablespoon of spices- usually Italian seasoning but it could be anything. Shake it…
  • I've never tried freezing. I'll try that. I often bake in a marinade of soy sauce, rice vinegar, etc, with about a tablespoon of oil for the whole block. If you have a convection oven it gets quite crispy.
  • My youngest is 6 years now, but I want to cheer you ladies on! It's so tough with a baby. Best advice I have is to walk everywhere with baby in a stroller or carrier. Walk to the grocery, library, etc. And don't be hard on yourself if the weight doesn't budge much until you are done nursing- your body may try very hard to…
  • I looked at 3 pages of your food diary and two things stood out: 1. A lot of refined carbs. Switch to whole wheat stuff. 2. Not many vegetables. So my suggestion would be to focus on those two things for a month and see if you notice a difference.
  • And I will say that my stomach at 167 looks way way way worse than all these great photos! I am blaming the 2 pregnancies for that. I know plenty of moms of more kids than me whose stomachs bounce right back, but not mine!
  • No pics, but I am 5'8". I was ~180 at my highest, after the birth of my 2nd kid. Now down to 167, and I am thinking about 160 will be right. So not a huge picture-worthy weight loss for me. Sometimes 5'8"-5'9" people have goal weights of 140-150 which is just not how my body is built, I would look awful! All of you in the…
  • Also- there is a Daniel Tiger episode about trying new foods. Stupid catchy song is stuck in my head just thinking about it! Argh! Anyway, mine loved it as toddlers/preschoolers.
  • We struggle with this a little- despite always serving consistently healthy meals- as most kids do just prefer junk (as do most adults- lets be honest!). Mine are 6 and 8, now. Here is how we handle it at our house. 1. We talk a lot (even starting when they were much younger) about how they get to choose what to put in…
  • 5'8". Before kids, I was 150 and size 8 pants. I've never really been less than that since I finished growing in 5th grade. Between kids I got back down to 155 and was happy. I have to eat perfect to stay at 150. After kid #2 I was at ~180. I lost 10 fairly fast, but kid #2 is 6 and I've stayed around 170 that whole time.…
  • I'm taking it for Barrett's esophagus. I have no heartburn (except when pg... I called the nurse in a panic because I honestly thought I was having a heart attack!) But the GI says I need a 6 month trial, or possibly forever, due to the cancer risk. Ugh. I hate taking it, I suck at remembering to take it, and I'm stopping…
  • If anyone is familiar with Feingold, it's a group that believes artificial dyes, preservatives, and flavors are bad for you. OK, whether or not you eat that way personally, it's reasonable to avoid that stuff if you want to, right? Well, labeling lawsa are awful. If bread is put into a bread bag that has been sprayed with…
  • Spinach can be tricky because as soon as it gets hot, it gets bitter. You have to plant early. I have good luck with lettuce of all types, spinach if I plant early, all Asian geens (mizuna, tatsoi, bok Choi) kale, collards, arugula. and Swiss chard. If you like Swiss chard it is great because it goes nuts all summer, while…
  • Interesting. I just got out on it. I'll have to do some reading.
  • Beautiful! Mine are still laying, although not quite as strong- I think they are sick of winter! I am getting 4 to 6 eggs a day from 6 girls. 7 chicks have been ordered for end of March! I just finished a pantry clear-out for the chickens- they add down a bunch of applesauce that no one liked (I left peels on and the picky…
  • I had no idea! Thanks. I will investigate. I do have both a FB and MFP account.
  • Weekly update: I had a really good week! Starting Weight: 170.4 2/18 weight: 167.2 Today: I switched to a 10 day average, as I weigh daily but it bounces around a lot. I do it in excel as I do not have a smart scale. Today's average is 166.5 So nice, steady progress!
  • I think you look great! Yes you are carrying some weight in your belly, but as you lose more that will change. Speaking from the perspective of someone who has had kids- don't worry too much about the extra skin now. If you plan to have kids, that skin will all have to stretch back out over the baby belly- so no sense…
  • I eat them, but I can't/won't eat them from sad factory hens. Besides the less optimal nutritional profile of the egg itself, I've gotten so accustomed to free range (really free range, not grocery store "free range") yolks being so dark orange, that pale yellow eggs make me want to hurl.
  • Huh. As a vegetarian who raises chicken (I eat eggs, obviously) I have wondered if I could stomach eating the bone broth from old hens- I am not hard line opposed to eating animal products, I'd rather they get eaten than wasted. But so far, I've just offered old gals to friends. I can't stomach eating bone broth. It…
