  • the chest strap is what actually monitors your heart beat. It "talks to" the watch. You need to wear both. If you get a HRM without the chest strap your accuracy will be wayyyyy off.
  • There are tons of threads on HRM. It seems like Polar is the brand people like the most around here. The ones that have the chest strap are more accurate than the others. I got a Polar FT7 for around $68 on Amazon. Do a search for Polar or HRM in the search box... and you will find everything you want to know.
  • OMG. I was on RW for years..... I frequented the L&O forum.... which had little to do with running, actually. :-p
  • Yeah... I think it's more data to say being like a pear is healthier than being like an apple. :)
  • I also got them during pregnancy. I have them on my hips, thighs, and breasts. Only one tiny one on my stomach though. They have faded a lot with time..... and I love them. They are my badges of motherhood. :)
  • This is exactly what i was going to say. No one's lower body is going to atrophy doing bodyweight exercises.
  • This is interesting.... and seems to make sense intellectually. I wonder if it is actually true. This idea is what is keeping me from lifting heavy weights. The LAST thing I need is bigger thighs...... Hopefully someone with some knowledge will pipe up.
  • If you actually have PF - then I believe rest is indicated. I have a few runner friends who have struggled with it and it has taken many many months of NOT running to heal. The pain on top of your foot - where is it exactly? Are your shoes brand new? I can sometimes get a pain on the top of my foot right above where my…
  • I was in the high 60s for resting before I started running. I've been pretty active with lots of distance running for about 6 years. I now run in the low 50s or sometimes high 40s.
  • Here's my .02..... If you had previously run longer distances, full or half marathons.... THEN had the interruption in training and injury.... then yes, I think it is possible to train for a half in 6 weeks. Because you would have had the base mileage at one point and a general higher level of running fitness. But, since…
  • There is certainly a lot of variation depending on what type of yoga you are doing...... hatha or yin burns hardly anything, but vinyasa, power, or bikram burns way more. It really depends on if you are getting your heart rate up.... doing lots of flows, etc. Does your heart rate increase? Do you sweat?
  • I don't carb load for anything less than a full marathon. I don't taper either. I just don't think it's necessary.
  • I haven't had a kid in a stroller for a long time (my youngest is 9), but I used to have a plastic cover, (that had breathing holes obviously) that would fit over the stroller so my kids didn't get wet.
  • Ok - I understand this. And I have done it before too. But, I feel really strongly that if possible you should patronize your local running store..... support the local businesses in your community - especially when they provide such a great service (analyzing your gait and providing expert recommendations!!!) !!!!
  • Personally, I like to run in the rain. <3
  • Get fitted. Get fitted. Get fitted. That said..... I love my Brooks Pure Connects. They are a "minimalist" but not quite barefoot shoe with a low heel drop. I have totally changed my stride - now midfoot striking instead of heel striking.
  • You can sign up at Yogaglo.com for $18 a month. Not sure if that is in your budget or not. But there are hundreds of videos to choose from with lots of styles, instructors, lengths, etc. Even a bunch of guided meditations. They give a 2 week free trial if you want to check it out.
  • I started running at age 36. I'm 41 now. I've run 4 full marathons, 7 half marathons... and a bunch of other shorter races. I started the same way..... run a minute, walk a minute, etc. It took a long time before I actually FELT like a runner. I'm not fast - I am pretty much mid-pack. But, anyone can do it - just takes…
  • I've drafted behind someone before.... But for pacing, not cheap thrills. Lol! I've also had someone come up behind me, lift my skirt, and goose my azz in a race. Not cool!! Turned out to be my ex husband - which made it even less cool. :-p
  • I do have a heart rate monitor and it says I burn between 290-320 calories per 40 minute workout. I just checked MFP and if I put in Circuit Training x 40 mins..... it comes up with 340. So it's a little high, but not too bad. I would use that.
  • +1 on Karen O!! I also love Carrie Brownstein from Sleater Kinney (and now Wild Flag) ... Oh! and Mary Louise Parker. :)
  • I have the Garmin Forerunner 405cx which is a recent upgrade from a 205. I like being able to use the HR monitor during runs but also during indoor cardio activities. I'm not sure how accurate the calorie burn is though..... but for tracking distance it's great.
  • I had the same experience when I was marathon training..... I actually gained about 5 lbs each time I ran a marathon (I've done 4). And I find it VERY hard to lose when all I am doing is running. It's counter-intuitive because if you are running 20 miles at a time you should be burning some very serious calories!! I would…
  • Depends on my pace, elevation, etc. I generally run around 135-140 for easy pace runs.... in the 150s for a fast pace or lots of hills.
  • You will be fine! Just put one foot in front of the other. What's the worst that will happen? You walk.
  • I always gain weight when I'm marathon training. It's a real bummer, isn't it?? I mean when you are running 20 milers you should be able to eat whatever you want!! I agree with the previous poster..... drop back the mileage a bit, add some speedwork, and be careful with diet. It will come off again. I also have found after…
  • I think it totally depends on your goals.... do you want to run a 5k? If so, work on distance. If you are in it purely for the calorie burn then I would recommend mixing it up. Do a couple of runs a week where you increase your distance and maybe once a week do a shorter run, but incorporate some fartleks or speedwork into…
  • This is good to hear. So maybe my numbers are not really off..... Thanks!
  • There is NO way you burned 700 calories in a 3 mile bike ride!!
