I ran for the first time last year, Doug. I thought I was a pretty confident runner, but that hill and the heat humbled me pretty good. But I had a great time. It is amazing being with 60 thousnad people all trying hard to improve themselves.

You should be able to hold a conversation while running. If you are too out of breath to do that then you are pushing to hard. While there is a need for interval training if you want to get faster, most of my runs are at this 75 - 80% effort pace. You will like the results, in the long run. (Sorry, I could not resist.)
