  • I find that once I cut out most grains (cross-contamination), I ate a heck of a lot more veggies to fill out a meal. As a consequence, my fiber intake went up, I have more energy, and I sleep better. I feel less bloated, and I stay full much longer. I'm pretty happy being grain-free, and my blood work has improved, too.
  • at my desk, I have: Granola bars Gluten-free protein bites (from my local hippie grocery) Bags of dates, dried bananas, dried mango slices, pecans Oatmeal packets A small tub each of coconut oil, almond butter, and protein powder Tub of gluten-free trail mix ... I like variety.
  • I find it's really easy for me to out-eat my exercise - if I don't measure stuff, I'm torched.
  • I exercise most days, but I still have my volumes set as sedentary - a workout is a tiny portion of my office-bound life, so I don't count myself as "active." Also: I second the water retention for muscle repair. Exercise is not a weight loss tool so much as a health tool. There are myriad studies demonstrating this.
  • About 90% of my wardrobe is thrifted - it makes a BIG difference :)
  • I look at it like this: I got big by baby steps - a little more here, a little more after that over a period of time. Every time you made a better choice this week was a better choice than the time before. Give yourself some time. You're making progress - five days of being ON target! :) It helps me if I make incremental…
  • I have two Pandora stations I use - one is a preset station (cunningly named "yoga"), the other is MC Yogi.
  • ^this^ you can lose on what you're doing, but you're not really fueling your body, so it will hold on to fat to make sure it can continue to survive. You're kinda making your body choose what it should fuel by eating so little - and then it holds on to stuff to keep you moving. It doesn't know WHY you're starving it, just…
  • I almost always workout in a gym, so I wear Vibrams for treadmill/ elliptical/ weight lifting/ outdoor workouts. For yoga and pilates classes at the gym, I am barefoot (though I wear my Vibrams when I do yoga at home to keep me from sliding around. Hee!). I feel like our bodies were made to operate without all that padding…
  • Being a Southern woman, I feel completely comfortable saying there are gorgeous Southern accents and terrible Southern accents. In South Carolina alone, we've easily got FIVE dialects, all which carry different inflection and intonation. Orangeburg through Charleston, sea islands and Gullah: Mmmm! Love it! Columbia? Eh,…
  • I'm on this page too - I signed up for a 5k to get myself motivated again. The past few weeks, I've just let myself make excuses, and boy, could I tell when I tried to go for a run yesterday! It was pathetic :( One thing I'm working on right now is reminding myself that food isn't a reward, it's fuel. The reqard is how…
  • The only thing that works for me is remembering that my body treats sugar like it would treat drugs - it's addictive. Once I start eating crap (which often has a bunch of sugar added in various forms), I know I won't be able to stop, becuse my body will crave it that much harder. I have to think of myself as an addict,…
  • You already know this, but you NEEd to gain weight. That's the point, right?
  • it CAN be done... but do you want to lose it FOR your birthday, or keep it gone? That's the real question. if you want to STAY in one-derland, I would reccomend against - 'cos you might lose it, but you won't be building those long-term habits that will keep you there. Happy birthday!
  • I began smoking because I was really shy and self-conscious and smoking gave me something to do with my hands. My parents and grandparents smoked (it was the 80s, man), so it wasn't a big deal, really. I quit (hopefully for the last time) in Janaury 2010, because I was sick of feeling crummy all the time.
  • Love kayaking - we have a nice moving river not terribly far away that has some small (very, very small) rapids along its course that we try to get out to a few times each season. I enjoy it enough that I'm giving thought to looking into a used kayak of my own, so we don't have to use the rentals.
  • Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't. I like it and think it's fun, but I will roll out of bed and go without and not feel badly about it. I had really bad acne when I was younger, and it took me a very long time to not feel self conscious about my scarring and uneven skin, but now I kinda like it. 'Course, a lot depends on…
  • My goals are mostly fitness-related now, so when I meet them, I give myself a new goal. I've taken to rewarding myself with registration fees and sports bras. *face palm* Which... Yeh, ok. That's just sad.
  • Oh, I feel you! I eat out a LOT more than is probably great for my wallet, but I lvoe spending time with my friends, and that's typically the best way to do so. My first line of defense is that, no matter what, as soon as I get my meal, I divide it in half - we all know portion size is way outta control, and that means I…
  • This x100. The scale is bollox. Measure. Take before and after pictures. Check the fit of your clothes.
  • There's a LOT of really good info here already, so I'll just chime into second: eat more quality protein and veggies, don't be afraid of fat (quality fats like nuts, avocados, and non-bean-related oils- I like coconut oil a LOT - will help you have more energy AND help you feel full), and NerdFitness ROCKS. If you can't get…
  • Several of my friends have celiac disease, and several more paleo-types, so I am primarily GF just because that's what I'm around - though I notice when I adhere to it, I feel way much mo' betta. Mostly, I just make extra veggies where I used to put in pasta or rice or bread. If it's a dish that would historically be…
  • w00t! I've been a 10/12 forEVER - and recently bought the first 6s of my LIFE - what a great feeling! GO YOU!

  • ugh - I'm dealing with this too. I have had friends and famly tell me they "hate me," my partner tell me it's "not fair," and been called a "skinny b!tch" by friends. All in the last week! I typically just let it go, but it is hurtful and upsetting. I am working hard to take care of myself - it's not as though it happened…
  • It may be a gluten sensitivity or something along those lines, especially if you've been pretty strictly paleo for a while.
  • I am a out-going, gregarious introvert. I make friends and form relationships easily. People seem to like me and I'm often asked to go places and do Things, and there is a running joke amongst my friends about how I'm the "cruise director" - I always know what's going on where, and co-ordinate efforts in going out. But, in…
  • When I began, it was because I wanted to be able to "do more stuff." Simple, really - vacations end up exhausting me 'cos we liek to do Things, but I always ended up being miserable on vacation because I hurt/ was too out of shape to do the things I was excited about (snorkeling in Costa Rica? SWEET! Except, kayaking in…
  • I've had people call me a "skinny b!t(h" because I've lost weight. the only thing that's changed is that I feel happy in my skin for the first time. I'm proud of the work I've done - and I work *HARD* at taking care of myself now, in a way I never have before. I haven't been doing this as long as some, and I have less to…
