  • If he doesn't understand how a statement that people "should" do something has implicit judgment woven into it, then you're never going to convince him that anything he said was poorly worded, poorly framed and generally just ... poor. I don't think he has the critical reading skills he claimed. Or at least, they do not…
  • I think it's important to acknowledge that he's not saying it's impossible for Margaret to lose weight. He's saying it's wrong and crappy to project a bunch of negative traits onto her for having obesity because obesity isn't caused by being a lazy, stupid person.
  • There is a difference between causes/reasons and excuses. Even if "Margaret" tries, these issues in her life are still causes of her obesity and reasons why it is harder for her to successfully lose weight and maintain weight loss.
  • I'm with sidesteel in that I find this to be a terrible way to judge the squat. I can easily ATG a squat with my toes straightforward if my stance is narrow. Oh yeah, I'm also a record holder.
  • I work with an online coach who is EXCELLENT. He has openings currently, info here I've had really excellent changes to my body composition overall, and he's helped me get strong as fark. Highly recommend!
  • I work with an online trainer (hey, Sidesteel!) and personally prefer this to working with a trainer in person (which I've done a couple times). I like to do my workouts on my own schedule, at my own pace. The key to success with an online trainer is having a good fit and being very open with your trainer. Frankly, having…
  • I work with @SideSteel. He is a super cool dude and really knows his stuff. I feel extremely fortunate to have him as a trainer.
  • This is so helpful. I've been working on a lot of these strategies, and just having "bad food" (calorie dense, not satiating) out of sight (and similarly, "good food" like fruit on hand) makes a huge difference. The strategies and tips here are the things no one ever seems to think to talk about -- things that make…
  • I've worked with Patrick for about 2 years now. I was a total bullheaded *kitten* the first year, but this last year when I finally opened up to him and started actually listening to what he said everything just *clicked*. I started competing in powerlifting just about a year ago, and Patrick has been a complete godsend. I…
  • Hahaha, thank you. 9 good lifts, 27 white lights :)
  • That too, Sara, but everyone knows that already. And thank you! I'm hoping to report back some solid PRs and 9 white lights.
  • All of this is so impressive! Well done and congrats, sun_fish!
  • I'll take a look into my magnesium/potassium intake. I promise my sodium isn't too low, though. :) ETA -- I foam roll my calves occasionally, I'll see if making it a habit for a little while helps out.
  • Ignoring the rest and just going for the advice --- Check out the brand Shock Absorber. I own three of these, and regularly run, sprint, jump rope, box, and box jump without any pain or discomfort. They have cup sizes from A to HH. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00B5MRNUC/ref=oh_details_o06_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
  • I've added some HIIT intervals into my training on the row machine and bike. It's definitely a different kind of work, thank you all for the advice!
  • I do sprints and box jumps as conditioning training for boxing/kickboxing. I love them, they're kind of my favorite <3 And part of what I'm wondering is what IS the right way to get my heart rate going. If the answer is tabatas or HIIT, then what does that look like? (I have some, but not much, experience with these).
  • I've experiences overtraining before, it didn't feel the same. Plus, I did have a break about a month ago. The reason I want to push it is because I want to continue to get better and improve. It's my personality -- I always want to be striving for another level. I'm having difficulty finding where that next level should…
  • Cardiovascular fitness and calorie deficit, specifically. Also, I get a lot of enjoyment out of the cardio I do, and I want to be someone who could decide to run a 10k on a whim without worry. I want to be a well-rounded athlete.
  • My goals for 2014 and progress so far: 1 - Squat 250 lbs. ~ Went from 185 lbs to 215 lbs. This matches my previous PR before I took several months off lifting. 2 - Deadlift 300 lbs. ~ Went from 235 lbs to 255 lbs. This is 10 lbs higher than my previous PR. 3- Bench Press 150 lbs. ~ Went from 105 lbs to 120 lbs. This is 20…
  • I'm going to have to look into joker sets more to be sure I understand -- I get the process, I'm not certain I understand the reasoning behind them. I've dialed back to 90% for round 2 on most of my lifts -- squat I left alone because I've been hitting my numbers really easily for squat. I appreciate the feedback -- and…
  • I didn't follow the 90% rule because when I have in the past it's not worked out well for me -- I'm in a pretty steep deficit right now and not trying to hit near my max on lifts makes me lose strength pretty rapidly. That said, I didn't use my actually one rep maxes -- I calculated so that my "1 rep" on week 3 would be…
  • Sara -- I just started, this will be week 3.
  • In a 5/3/1 routine, what do you do if you miss a lift? I just did my "3" week (week 2) and couldn't hit 3 reps on all my final sets. Do I re-try week 2, proceed to week 3 and do what I can and start back with the same numbers after the 4 weeks is up, or something else?
  • You know, if someone's lifting 400 lbs they're probably not dropping the weight to show off how badass they are -- they're probably dropping it so they don't pop a disc on they way back to the ground.
  • Interesting, thank you. I'll give this a shot.
  • Bump -- any thoughts on what kind of accessory I should be adding in? I've started doing 5/3/1 BB with a day of rows added in. Also, I hope the potty training's going well!
  • Follow-up: I'm considering switching to 5/3/1, but with a 4-day split I'd be squatting 1x a week. Is that really optimal for training?
  • So, I've been looking into this and the age divisions all seem to jump from 20-23 to 35+. Do those of us who fall in between just have to go in the "Open" division?
  • Tagging! (I've been browsing here: http://www.powerliftingwatch.com/powerlifting-meets)
  • Congrats! Too bad I'm not in MN anymore. My big sis lives up there but she's not one for -- how should I day this? -- hard work.
