Since I was 60 when I was dx'd I've not had the pleasure of TOM and what it can do to your control over the short term. From what I have seen on the online diabetes boards this is very common and once you get the hang of the timing you can set up a different dosing schedule for when it kicks in. Have you found the boards…

Welcome to the club that no one joins by choice! For.me it has been just shy of a year. I know where your coming from. I had to drag my docs to the correct diagnosis. Since I was 60 when I presented the er and primary assumed I was a type 2. With a BMI of 24, very active, in BKA , BG of 485 and dropped to 140 in 2 hours…

Hello and welcome to the club! Not one anyone of chose to join but s@#t happens and life goes on. Good to hear that you are testing a lot and have your number under good control. Have you read Think like a Pancreas or Using Insulin yet? They have a wealth of information about your new life and the adjustments you are…

Sorry to hear you joined the club! I'm newish as well - just diagnosed the end of January. There is a lot of misinformation out there, and a lot of low expectations from clinicians. The best thing you can do for yourself is educate yourself - read, go online and look at the diabetes discussion boards. look for the american…

Just an addition went online and looked at the sets offered by medtronic - the silhouette is actually the same as the comfort. Made by same manufacturers just labeled and sold by different outfits. Might consider getting a sil-serter to see if I can do one handed insertion on alternate sites. Just don't like the idea of…

Hi from the States! Good people and good tools here. You can do it-just needs good carb counting skills, and this is the place to learn. If you don't have one yet get a gram food scale and weigh your portions. It was a big eye opener for me and explained a lot! With PECOS it can be harder- you may need to really restrict…

I have used Cleo 90's and comfort shorts. The cleos look similar to the mios. With the cleos I need to run a 20% higher basil rate to get the same control I get with the comfort shorts. Cannula length on the Cleo is 6mm, I'm thin ish with some love handles so I went with the shorter length. May give the 9mms a try as I…

The less time you spend above 140 the lower your chance of developing complications. The tinnitus I developed shortly after my dx has started to resolve now that my numbers are in a much narrower range. I thought that it was the metformin I was initially put on as I was misdiagnosed as a T2 since I was 60. But it is…

A lot of this has to do with the low level of expectation from many of the diabetes practitioners out there. I would not consider an A1C of 7-11 as being in good control. Look at the link and see how the risk of complications goes up dramatically with the rise in A1C levels. Any length of time spent with a sugar above 140…

If you are into abusive relationships then hang around. If not then look to get out and find someone who likes you for who you are. Your BMI is 22, nothing to be ashamed of. He puts you down, complains you're fat and in general verbally abuses you for a non existent condition. You may need to tone a bit and build muscle…

Go to the tudiabetes or ada message boards. They have links to organizations that accept donations of supplies and get them out to those in need of assistance.

I hear you! Been fortunate to be covered at work with an outstanding plan. Just had to pay tword my out of network coinsurance but all of the supplies etc are now covered 100%, and that is for both the pump and cgm. If your in the states have you looked at what a plan throughout the ACA exchanges will run and if the…

The T-slim does not come with CGM but tandem does have an association with dexcom. You do get a One Touch Verio IQ meter as part of the package. The software dose .let you upload both the pump and meter to the same site so the BG readings integrate with the pump info. The future plans are for the dex G4 to integrate with…

Carly, You will find that a pump will free you once you learn how to let it. Most important is knowing your basal rate, your insulin to carb ratio, your duration of insulin activity and your correction factor. You will need to buff your carb counting skills. MFP can help if you log all your foods. I have my food log set to…

Whichever way you chose to go with walking vs running you will get to a point that you do not increase burn due to fitness levels. Then it becomes a matter of how much return on time invested. Do you have the time and interest in extended cardio? Have you considered mixing in a strength training routine like strong lifts…

More muscle mass utilizes more glucose for energy and the more you use it the more sensitive you are to insulin. I do stronglifts 5x5 - stair climbing uses many of the same muscle groups as squats. For me climbing steps for 5-10minutes works me harder than walking the same time even if I'm walking at 3.5 mph. I don't get…

Emily, Another t slim/ dex G4 user here. I also have a category for snack/lows as well as one for exercise/ post workout. I include them in my total calories for the day. I have set my diary so that carbs track first with fiber, protein and fat next in line so I can do my bolus dose calculations easily. Don't care too much…

Could not have said it better!!!! Started lifting at 60 and the low back pain that followed me from my teens is now gone! Able to get back into hiking that I drifted away from 10 years ago and am so glad I'm back and stronger than before. Go - Reach for the stars - You can do it. The only accommodation I have made for my…

Have you worked out your basal rate problem yet? Reading either "Think like a pancreaa" or "Using insulin" will show you how. Knowing how will let you make changes as your needs change. The more info you can show your clinical team the tighter your control can be and the lower your your risk for long-term complications.

I tend to have three meals with no snacks planned for my day. Will grab a defined number of flash carbs if I have IOB issue with a low. I aim for 20-30gm protein, 5-10 gm fiber, and around 40-50 gm net carbs per meal. Breakfast 7ish, lunch 12 noonish and dinner by 6 Pm and bolus appropriately for each meal. I prefer not to…

It depends on what tests are ordered. If it's just an A1C then it does not need to be fasted. If it's for a fasted blood sugar or a lipid profile then you need to fast for a minimum of 8 hours before testing. Check with your doc on what is ordered and when you can eat. I tend to get my labs on Saturday. I just head to the…

Have you read the book "Think like a Pancreas" It shows you how to do basal checks so you can see where your basal dose should be. then you can work on getting your bolus dose set correctly. Are you doing sliding scale or do you have an I:C ratio? Getting on to an Insulin to Carb ratio will let you cover what you're…

Definitely liking the t:slim. I don't have any other pump experience so nothing to compare to. It's small, fits into a pocket or small waist belt bag. I have it and my dex g4 receiver in an amphipod and most people do not notice I'm wearing it. Loading is easy, programming easy. The touch screen flow patterns are logical.…

Not true!!! Type 1 is auto immune and can happen at any age. It is more common in younger kids and young adults but it can happen at any time. It is sometimes associated with a history of a recent viral illness but no specific infectious agent has been identified. You produce antibodies against the cells in your pancreas…
