Count me in too!

Man... It's important to stay strong.... We have a guest staying over at our house for the next few days, and they obviously aren't dieting. So we have to balance being accommodating while maintaining our own diet. We've already made it clear to them that we are dieting. So let's see how this goes.... So far so good....…

I look forward to Mondays. You know why? Because I feel like I am in better control of my eating habits, due to the predictability of my daily routine.

I read somewhere that portabello mushroom tops can be used as a "bread alternative"? Is that true? Can it actually be used as a bread? Any advice in this regard would be appreciated...

What's the difference between steel cut oats vs regular oatmeal? I heard that steel cut oats takes longer to prepare? (You have to boil it, as opposed to regular oatmeal, which you can just microwave?)

Isn't too much coffee not good for you? How much is too much? Doesn't all that caffeine get to you?
-
Yes... And just like they say you shouldn't "skip" breakfast, they also say that you should not eat within the last 3 hours before going to bed, otherwise the food is going to stay in your tummy all night while your digestive system and metabolism slow down, and that food will be more prone to turn into fat.... Not sure…

Sure, why not? As long as it fits within your calorie goal for the day... and it doesn't upset the balance of your appetite / cravings to go off track the rest of the day, that's well and good!

So was everyone's weekend? Did you survive? Did you go through any challenging situations? I survived. Today, I survived on a banana, an apple, and a cup of sliced oranges until 3:30PM... after which I ate a salad and some chicken wings. Later in the evening, I was a little hungry, so I rewarded myself with a little taste…

It's the weekend, everyone! Anyone who has ever been to a beach knows that every once in a while, you have to be ready for the "big wave" to come to shore. Weekends (for me) are like that when it comes to the challenge of eating healthy. It's more like a tsunami. I come from a big family / community that when we get…

How did your first day go? Today I am on Day #4.

My wife has given me back massages... And for those brief couple of minutes, it has indeed made a difference and provided some relief from the back pain. Yesterday, I tried meditating. (I don't really know how... But I just sat in silence and focused on some distant object, clearing my mind, for a few minutes.... and I did…

Those of us who skip breakfast.... Don't they say that "breakfast is the most important meal of the day"? Supposedly, from what I've read, eating breakfast helps to kick start your metabolism for that day. How do we reconcile that? Or is that just a myth? Can anyone here attest to whether or not eating or not eating…

I am inspired and motivated by seeing you guys log your successes with this challenge. Maybe I'll join the December challenge. It can be challenging to stay outdoors during the cold weather.... How do you guys manage that? Just bundle up and brave the cold? (I guess your body would naturally heat up and break a sweat if…

The last two days, I've been experimenting with "splitting" my breakfast up into "segments". And it seems to be working well for me. I'll try it again today, which is my Day #3. While getting the kids ready for school, I ate an apple. I will then have strawberries / blueberries / banana after I drop them off. So…

Thanks for the motivation and encouragement, guys! Today is my Day #3. My Day #2 went well.... But first thing in the morning, I decided to alter my goal a little bit: I had originally set my daily calorie goal to be 1200ish, by losing 2 pounds per week. As some of you posted above, it's important to take baby steps and to…

I plugged in my weight, height, age, and gender into MFP, and I set my goal to lose 2 pounds per week.... And so the target number MFP came up with was approximately 1200 calories per day.
-
Interesting approach. I kind of did that yesterday and today too. I had an apple while getting the kids ready for school. And then I made a bowl of 4oz of strawberries & 4oz of blueberries which I am having now.... just one hour later. (They do say that you should have several smaller meals per day... Might be worth…

I'm the same way. By force of habit, I have to eat the same breakfast every morning and it has to consist of 2 eggs and 2 slices of bread. While it is satisfying, I am looking to come up with a healthier yet satisfying alternative.
-
That is very true. There's no reason you can't have what you like to eat, as long as you manage the portion sizes.... ... and if we tweak our favorite meals a bit by swapping out some portion of it for a more satisfying and / or more healthy alternative.
-
Hmm! It never occurred to me that you could add an avocado to a smoothie... Interesting combination. I'll try it some time.
-
Yum.... I think I will try that one of these days.

Good morning fellow MFPers! Today is Day #2 for me. This morning, I ate an apple first thing, while getting the kids ready for school. I figured that I should start the day off right. They say you should have a minimum of 5 servings of fruits and vegetables per day. So I figured I could knock off one right off the bat and…

Well, well, well.... We've reached the end of my first day back in diet mode. I successfully warded off most temptations... and managed to consume approximately 1400 calories. (Was hoping to stay at or below 1200, but 1400 isn't bad in my opinion.... I would have done some exercise to help burn off the excess, but I can't…

Hmm.... When I am not dieting, I usually end up having days where my breakfast is 500 calories too.... I suppose it could be possible to maintain a 1500 to 1800 calorie diet day, if each meal was equally 500 to 600 calories.
-
"Dinner for breakfast".... Interesting concept. I'm sure it holds you over until lunch.... But then how does the rest of your day go in terms of lunch, dinner, snacks, and staying within your target calorie limit?
-
Yes... I am addicted to bread and to rice. It will require some creativity and ingenuity, and some effort, to come up with satisfying meal alternatives that don't require bread or rice to enjoy.
-
I also like larger dinners too (and apparently larger breakfasts and lunches, which is what got me into this situation in the first place.). There is something psychologically satisfying (for me at least) about having a large dinner after a long day of work. But if dietary willpower is all in the mind, then I may have to…

Nice breakfast.... I'll give this one a try one of these days... I take it the WW bagels are much lower in calories than a typical bagel?

Thanks for the suggestion. I guess the key point you are recommending is to swap out one slice of bread with a piece of fruit = bread is loaded with "bad carbs", whereas I need to ensure that I have at least one serving of fruit / vegetable to start the day. I can definitely live with one less slice of bread! And…
