No, you are not selfish, especially if you go get a dog from the pound. I am away from home 9 hours a day with my commute. My dog Roscoe does just fine (australian shepherd mix). I think as long as you give the dog a nice walk when you come home most days he'll be happy as a clam. Just get the right dog, no border collies…
