Week one was brutal for me... 45 seconds of running and I was ready to pass out. I just finished week 5 last Friday... the body is an amazing machine! The first two runs of week 5 were easier for me than week 1, but yes, that 20 minute run on W5D3 is a doozy. The first 15 minutes were ok, but that last 5 minutes was all…

No, it doesn't. See above post.

I gave up caffeine and alcohol when my wife got pregnant. Maybe I'm just a sap, but considering everything she had to go through to give birth, it seemed like the least I could do.

You know, Wikipedia requires citations and is reviewed by moderators... it's not perfect, but it's much better than people are portraying in this thread. http://news.cnet.com/2100-1038_3-5997332.html Excerpt: "Wikipedia is about as good a source of accurate information as Britannica, the venerable standard-bearer of facts…

Excellent. That really is the first study I've seen which suggests an increase in REE over what is expected based on the size of calorie restriction. However, this same study also said that those returning from VLCD (and wow, 500 kcal/d is really, really low) to a 1200 kcal/day diet did have a rebound in their REE.…

The idea that muscle burns significantly more calories than fat is also often overstated by (some) health professionals. Muscle burns 7-10 kcal/day while fat burns 2-3 kcal/day. Source(s): http://articles.latimes.com/2011/may/16/health/la-he-fitness-muscle-myth-20110516…

Not to be a jerk, but did you actually read the study? Because I did, and it doesn't say anything about the size of the calorie restriction having a direct correlation to the size of adaptive thermogenesis. Here is a key excerpt from the study: "In conclusion, based on studies that have shown a greater than predicted…

Your TDEE estimate is merely your estimated BMR (calories at rest) times some multiplier. If you pick "lightly active" because you work out three times per week, it is adding extra calories. So yes, if you are then eating your exercise calories, you are essentially counting those calories twice and eating too much. I think…

Basically you're asking, does life have meaning? I'm sure you'll find the answer to that question here.
-
Yarwell is 100% correct. The BMR and TDEE formulas on the internet are just estimates. The only way to know for sure is to log all of your calories in and out as accurately as possible and over time you should be able to determine a better estimate of your actual TDEE. Just because the calculators spit out 2000 doesn't…

I would argue *mostly* true, but that flame war has seen enough casualties... :flowerforyou:

:noway: I guess it depends on how you are defining "vegetable." Nutritionally, they may be more properly described as a starch (or as some are calling it, a "super-carb")... but technically, they are still vegetables. Source: http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/vegetable

It gets easier. Looking back, week 1 was probably the hardest so far... I could get to about 45 seconds of running before my lungs were burning and I thought I was going to pass out. I just ran for 8 minutes yesterday... twice! I think if you stick with it and don't try to push yourself too hard, you'll be fine. Just don't…

True, any calorie deficit will result in a slower metabolism, the majority of which is caused by a lower body weight. Less mass (lean or otherwise) burns less calories. Without a calorie deficit, though, you can't lose weight. If you want to weigh 50 pounds less, you have to accept that you won't be able to eat as much at…

Please let us know how it goes. I have my W5D3 run tomorrow and I'm nervous, too. I did fine yesterday, but it's quite the jump from 8 minutes to 20!

Wow.... sounds like life is slapping you in the face pretty hard. I hope the cancer is treatable... I can't imagine how scary that must be. The only thing I can think of to say is, just take it one day at a time. If you fall down today, it's no big deal. Perfection is not required. Just wake up tomorrow and try again. Go…

From the (unread) WSJ article: Scientists have known since the 1930s that the technique lengthens the lives of mice. But until now, no study had shown the technique worked in monkeys, which are more genetically similar to humans. One difficulty: Monkeys live almost 30 years on average, meaning any study to measure a…
