When you get rid of the processed foods and sugars your taste will change, don't worry, it'll happen, just keep trying new things and mix it up so you don't get bored. Baby carrots become like candy :)

I'm farily new as well (Jan) so I can tell you a few things as a new beginner myself What advice would you give a beginner? Do it, you will be thrilled and feel like a beast. j/k, make sure your form is good by getting help form someone who really knows what they are doing and watch a lot of videos What do you do for abs?…

Pick things up, put things down j/k, I got started with weightlifting through crossfit, you could search their moves, mostly olympic lifts. I've heard the New Rules for Weightlifting for Women is really good too, ordered a copy the other day but it hasn't come in yet...

and tighten your glutes, I still forget this and have to constantly be reminded....

Bridging the gap between knne pushups and regular has been helpful for me. Did my first real one about a month ago and now I'm to 5! Staring on knees, on the up press bring your knees off the floor and go into full position on your toes at the top, try to keep flat back/proper position. Lower yourself in full position on…

You may want to just mix it in at the end rather than cook it with, I believe the heat damages it.

I'm a career changer myself, so no, I wouldn't be bothered by it.

A balanced diet with all the food groups is NOT the only way to stay healthy. It is more than possible to get all the nutrients needed when eliminating food groups, certainly ones that provide little nutrition. You just have to pay attention to what you are doing like anything else.

hard grating parmesan: 30% calcium, <1g sugar. Just the one I use but many cheeses may be similar, not sure, most of the lactose should be used up in the process of becoming cheese. Plain yogurt should be slightly less than milk as well. Veggies, you can search to find the ones with the most, but the greens are a good…

You're right, it is very confusing out there. Here's what I would reccomend to a family member: Do some research so you understand the different sources of carbs, understand the difference between glycemic index and glycemic load, research leaky gut a bit, really look at your needs like exercise intensity, and then…

So true, many jump in without really understanding the principals, have littel guidance, or take it too far. I'm lower carb than the USDA reccomends but I'm sure to get plenty to support my activity level. It's all about doing your homework and listening to how your body is responding.

Clearly the paper has faults and I'm happy to see people looking at it with a critical eye, this is what we need more of when new studies pop up avoid the mistakes of the past. Good catch, the paper he cited with regard to colon cancer is 10 years old.

Not supporting the Atkins diet per se but would like to mention this Dr. Atikns created his plan in the 1960's with his obese and depressed patients, he found success with them and began specializing in treating obesity. So, is it a fad to have a program that was succesful with overweight and sick people and has been…

All good points, but it's also important to look at how the study is actually conducted as well. Newer doesn't always mean better. If you read the paper it's surprising/interesting how much studies contradict each other or exagerate the findings but broad reccomendations are made based on them anyway. Or how beliefs cling…

Sorry, I was editing it to include the link, had forgotten to paste it in before posting. It's there now.

It's hard to know without seeing your diary but I would guess (from advice I've been given from many sources, and you may hear the same here) is that you could be overtraining and/or not eating enough? Although on a calorie counter website 1600 looks like a pretty good number. Maybe 5 weeks is still a little early to see…

I do a quality fish oil for the omega-3's, there is just too much research out there for me to disregard it, particularly in the area of brain health. Can't really say I notice a difference day to day.

Sounds like you've got a plan. The only problem I've run across with salads is they can run pretty low calorie depending on what you put on them. I'd just keep tracking your calories for a little while after the switch to make sure you're not dropping too low. I love hard boiled eggs and sunflower seeds as toppers. And…

I'm sure someone else can take more time to fully explain this but essentially, yes, they get turned into glucose which your body uses as a fuel source. This occurs with many foods, not just the ones you mentioned. Different sources (fat, carb, protein) can be converted to glucose through different metabolic pathways. If…

I don't either, I eat fruit and veg like crazy. My original post stated that I thought her trainer was taking it too far.

After reading the China Study and watching Forks Over Knives my grandma has gone vegan and is hell bent on getting her overall cholesterol below 150. She has eliminated avery source of fat in her diet, vegan or otherwise, to work towards this goal. She believes this will greatly lower her cardiovascular risk but I have to…

There is a direct paragragh from one of the research papers about your last sentence: "Cell membranes need constant maintenance to repair and replace fats and cholesterol subsequent to oxidative damage. The strong influence of Ancel Keys [31], beginning the the 1960's, has led to dietary avoidance of fats and cholesterol…

I'm not against moderation, I was simply responding to your statement that sugar has no effect. It seems a bit careless to advise people on diet when you fail to recognize that our body is ruled by hormones and the role food plays in affecting those hormones. There is more to your health then losing weight at this moment.…

Umm, insulin resistence and it's cascade of subsequent diseases? To say it has no effect is a bit short-sighted. Calories may be more important to the scale but it sounds like the original poster, from her description of her current diet and activity, is concernced about well-being and long term health as well.

Right, low carb, low sugar, and high fat. And paleo is going to be inherehently higher fat, lower carb and sugar than a traditional diet. Of course you can do this without calling it paleo. The article was simply summarizing the research within a paleo frame work since it was an article on a paleo website.

This for sure, activates the large muscles in your calf so there is less strain on the small ones attached to your shin. And rolling your calves before and after with some type of roller, I use a big PVC pipe section.

I'm certainly no expert but since no one has replied yet I'll throw in my 2 cents based on my readings. Eliminating added sugar from your diet: Excellent idea, go for it and you'll feel and look better. You may be grouchy and angry for a week or so but the cravings will go away, making it surprisingly easy to pass them up.…

What AvsFreak he said with regard to what she meant by "carbs". Don't worry about the carbs from fruits and veggies. For many (not all) reducing the % of these types of carbs in their overall diet helps them lose weight, manage their blood sugar, and reduce bloating. As for what time fo day to eat them I have no idea,…
