I used to get soda and candy practically every night when I had to stay up late and try to study. Part of my problem was procrastination - I only studied at night, last minute, so of course I was tired and stressed out and needed caffeine and energy. So take a look at your schedule and see if there's any way to reduce…

Guess that depends on how hard you're swimming. Are you just playing around, doing easy laps, or sprinting? If you do feel super sore, I'd suggest a light warmup and some good stretching. Swimming can help with both of those things. Remember that your muscles do need some time off, though!

176.5 Finally some change!

You don't need a gym membership to gain muscle, or a lot of equipment. There are a ton of body weight exercises out there, and some are incredibly intense. I've been doing body weight exercises for about 15 weeks now, and I can see a difference. You can try increasing your reps, but you should also try more difficult…

I have finished the beginner 10 week program, and am on week 2 of the second program. The results have been awesome. I have lost fat and gained a fair amount of muscle. I am able to do everything, even without any weights or equipment. Totally worth it. Although - I spend a lot of time being somewhat sore, and the first…

177.5 still... apparently my weight is happy right where it is...

Karibu Tanzania! We have: Serengeti, Manyara, Ngorongoro, Mikumi, Ruaha, Selous... just to name a few. Not to mention Kilimanjaro, which is just awesome.

Me! Born and raised.

Hey! I strength train at home, all body-weight exercises. I'm following a program in a book (You Are Your Own Gym). It's really worked for me, and you only need things like a table, chairs, or other household items, though many of the exercises don't need anything at all. I've done it for 13 weeks now, and the change is…

I think low intensity jump roping has about the same impact as jogging, or even less, since you land on both feet at the same time. I think if you can jog, you should be okay to jump rope. Give it a try, and if you get sore ankles, take a break.

I never owned a TV, so when my roommate left (with the TV) I learned to live without. I stopped paying for cable (which I could watch through the computer). If I really want to watch a show, I can find it online or watch it some other time. If you want to kick the TV habit, just turn it off completely for a couple months.…

Well, when I played soccer, I did cross-country running in the off season, specifically to train for soccer. So... find a adult soccer league! Or anything else that you might be interested in. I think the cardio element is important, but also think about working those muscles in a manner that's different from running.

I've only had a few attacks, and they were while running, after pushing myself far past my usual limits (or in extremely cold weather). It wasn't a burning sensation, but my chest and throat got very tight, started coughing, and had trouble breathing for a while. I don't have any problems with it when I'm in good running…

177.5 No change, but not bad for vacation week I guess.

We have... goats? I've seen a monkey. Not sure my neighbors would appreciate me goat-hunting....

Sounds like fun! But yes, you were in tourist land, where they have better growing climate and lots of imported food. I'm in southern TZ, and we don't really get much access to fruits/veggies that aren't grown locally. I'm also in a village, not in town, so we get even less stuff in the market. You're right about the…

I do too. It's because I know I don't have to work, so I start looking for other things to do... and oh, hey, look at the food!

I'm definitely having an awesome time here! Words can't describe. I do want to be healthier, but eating like the locals has caused me to gain weight. I know I can always lose it when I get back home, but I feel so motivated to do it now! I guess, in the end, this experience is worth a few extra pounds. And who knows, if I…

Two years total, but I've already been here quite a while. Another 7 months or so. I know I need more cardio! But it's just so hot!!! Rainy season, definitely rainy! I do some planting (mostly corn, actually). I've tried other things, but my squash failed to produce and the carrots did absolutely nothing. The problem is…

I sometimes get mild exercise-induced asthma (or that's what I've been told it was). It only occurs when I am pushing cardio right to my absolute limits. Feels like I can't breathe, chest is tight, etc. It's not a problem when I am in good running shape. Just take it slow and keep working on the running. As mentioned…

I love running... when I am in good running shape. When I get out of shape, I absolutely hate all the work I have to do to get good at running again. I can't run on treadmills or around tracks, or even on concrete. I find some nice trails, well-maintained or not, but usually not heavily used, and just run out in nature. I…

I think they mean, set realistic, obtainable, and challenging goals. Know exactly where you are now, where you want to be, what your limitations are, and then base your goals off of that. If you make your goals too easy, you get the goal without having to fight for it, and slow your progress down. If you make the goal too…

Zombies are a serious problem and I'm ready to do my part! Count me in!

If you belong to a gym, I think you'll find that a lot of the machines can isolate your arms and chest without putting pressure on your spine. Make sure to consult with your doctor on this as well - gaining strength is good, injuring yourself is not. There are also a lot of exercises you can do on a bench, like variations…

Okay, so I'm not a 51 year old guy, but I can recommend a book that has worked really really well for me. It's called You Are Your Own Gym. It's all body weight exercises, so no gym, no equipment, and the workouts are 20-30 minutes long. I saw serious results in terms of fat loss after the first 10 week program, and I'm a…

Hi Kasey, I think we're pretty similar. I've always been in some kind of sport - soccer, swimming, martial arts - but am still overweight. Not unhealthy, just not at the weight I think I should be at. I also need a lot of motivation. I enjoy exercising, but I also have terrible eating habits! Feel free to add/message me!

You can try getting a snug pair of workout gloves for the rowing and the weights, or, if you continue to work out like this, eventually you will get calluses and you won't blister any more.
-
First off, congrats on your weight loss. That's amazing. So, if you don't work out for 6 weeks, yes, you will lose a little strength and endurance. It probably won't be as much as you think, and you can definitely get it all back! As far as weight gain, just adjust your eating accordingly. Focus on healing your body and…

Well, I'm sure you are pretty familiar with different stretches from your dancing days, so I won't describe any (kinda hard to do anyways). What I have done is picked out a quick routine of stretches that get all of the major muscles and make sure to stretch after every workout. This doesn't take long, maybe 5-10 minutes.…
