  • Make a schedule and stick to it. That means planning regular meals and snacks, and not skipping your meals. Also, plan to have some of the food that you really like, just make the portions fit your calories. I eat chocolate every single day, and it keeps me from going crazy. As far as the rest of your life, and handling…
  • Not really. Budweiser is a manufacturer, and the OP's question doesn't involve food companies, just the man, his wife, and the doctors. I wouldn't blame the doctors. They tell people to lose weight all the time before surgery, to make it more safe and to judge how committed the patient is to a lifestyle change. After that,…
  • Would a funeral really cost that much? I mean, I'm game for cremation or a simple pine box... I don't expect to have any other kind of debt, but what other factors (other than loan and funeral) might I be considering when I choose how much insurance to get?
  • Having read the rest of this thread, I no longer understand all of what everyone is saying. But thanks for the advice. No dependents as of yet; the only purpose of life insurance would be to make sure I don't leave my parents hanging, since they were so kind as to make an interest-free loan to me.
  • Coolness. Thanks to all for the advice.
  • But, but, but.... food.... and more food... No, you're right. I just have to stop being a baby. I'll buy food when I'm rich. But you are right, I gotta get those little expenditures in check.
  • I will be a grad student, starting this fall, and I'm getting a "parent loan." They want me to have life insurance just in case something happens and I, being dead, am not able to pay them back the $20,000. What kind of life insurance should I get? Keeping in mind I am a poor grad student. On that note, any advice for me…
  • So I looked at your diary, and between food and exercise, you never net more than 1000 calories, and often it's under 500. I don't know how much reading you've done on the forums, but most people will tell you that's unhealthy and probably hindering your weight loss.
  • Wow. I don't think the OP mentioned at all what the girls were actually doing, or their ages, or their intelligence.... Women need to support each other, not jump on the witch hunting band wagon. To the OP: sometimes it feels like everyone who laughs, is laughing at you. It's not true. If they were laughing at you, then…
  • Florida here. So serious. I love watching people go in, weigh themselves, and walk right back out. And I've weighed luggage there before...
  • Doctors can have bad scales, but that's not really the issue, and I can't comment on your specific scales. But, if you want to monitor your progress, choose the most convenient scale (probably the one you have) and decide that it's right. Unless it's completely broken, if you lose a pound, it will tell you. Your exact…
  • Don't stretch your muscles when you are cold. Warm up, do some exercises, and then stretch. A good stretch (that makes you more flexible) is going to hurt, but I find that it also really helps with muscle soreness.
  • What I usually do is start working out, slowly and with the intention of warming up. If the soreness starts going away, then everything's fine and I keep working out. I will work through some pain and soreness, but if warming up doesn't help or makes it worse, I rest whatever is hurting. That doesn't mean I stop…
  • Thanks, I do think it would be fun and educational to just do something completely new. I will certainly consider it. Anyone else have any thoughts/suggestions? Surely a few of you have changed schools/styles before.
  • Try dumbbell bent over rows. If you can get comfortable lifting the same draw weight as your bow, then you will probably be pretty balanced. edited cuz of grammar....and also, you can do lots more a lot more to strengthen all of your muscles. Even body weight stuff like pushups and pull ups will make you more balanced.…
  • I injured my back a few years ago weight lifting, and doing any kind of exercise, even the stuff in physical therapy, was pretty painful. Not only that, it wasn't helping. I couldn't sit or stand for long periods of time. Honestly, at that point my only concern was healing, but if you really keep your diet in check you…
  • I've not been to Anytime fitness, but I go to the local Planet Fitness about 4 times a week. Every PF is different, so make sure you get a tour before you switch. Some have really lousy free weight sections, and others are decent. Mine is just fine as long as I avoid peak hours. It's definitely cheap (I think a $40 sign up…
  • Bumping, maybe someone has a good answer to this... I was a PCV in Tanzania. Logging food and exercise was pretty much just guessing for me. You might not be able to keep things accurate, but at least you're doing something! It's pretty easy to just throw in the towel in that kind of situation.

  • I haven't dislocated my knee, but for me, knee pain means I am overworking it and straining previous injuries. I don't stop exercising, I just dial it back and focus on rehab. If the jumping is hurting it, sounds like you should switch to low impact exercises until it feels better. It won't hurt you to completely rest your…
  • I guess that makes sense; Miami's pretty diverse. I'll have to keep an eye out next time I'm down there. Got to find my Swahili peeps!
  • Where? I've been trying to find a Kenyan/Tanzanian community in Florida, been failing thus far.
  • There are pros and cons, but I think it also widely varies by the gym. At mine, if I go during off hours, I can do pretty much whatever I want to, or somehow improvise. The dumbbells only go up to 70, but I'm a while away from that being a problem. During peak crazy hours, it can be a pain since their free weight section…
  • You may be familiar with the quote "There are no superior martial arts, only superior martial artists." I would say this also extends to instructors and schools. If you are seeking to develop both mind and body, the key is finding a very knowledgeable instructor in a school that focuses on making its students well-rounded,…
  • Canada, Japan, Ethiopia, Tanzania (lived there 2 years).
  • Well, I lived in Africa (Tanzania) and ate mangoes right off the tree in front of my house. I have to say, if those pills promote weight loss, it's not the mango that's doing it. Delicious? Yes. Miracle weight loss? No.
  • I liked the gym when I had a dedicated workout buddy to spot me and motivate me. Otherwise, it's just an expensive place to workout. Of course, I can meet my goals at home or at the gym, which is something that's different for everyone. At home, I'm loving my Rushfit DVDs and my heavy bag.
  • Yeah... gonna do my best to not gain 10 pounds in the first two weeks home. But come on! I can eat something other than rice and beans for a change! Thanks for the advice, I will start composing my really short stories now. I know people won't want to hear me rambling on forever, even though I could!
  • Hey all, I'm Leslie, but mfanyafujo on NaNo. I like writing, so I've finally signed up for my first NaNoWriMo! We'll see how it goes. I think I'll have lots of free time this November. I'm pretty excited to get started.
  • I studied mechanical. I didn't mind the math, but what I did find out is that I'm not at all into design or other computer-oriented stuff. I had an awesome job in college though, doing maintenance and upgrades on various machinery. My favorite thing about mechanical is hydraulics and all of the fun math behind that…
  • Believe me, I know the feeling. I've been trying to get back into running, but my knee just won't take it yet. Sometimes you just gotta rest!
