Hate to say it, but you might just need to rest until it's fully healed. Any sort of arm exercise, especially ones that mimic pushups, could just aggravate your injury, or at least slow the healing process. Definitely don't do anything that hurts your shoulder. Is physical therapy an option? Or start working on your…

You may not have to. I don't know if you've donated before, but they do a finger prick before to test your iron (I usually fail). If you fail, you can try again the next day, and try to boost your iron through food or vitamins.
-
Just eat like normal. They will give you snacks and drinks during. Drink lots of water or sports drinks like Gatorade. The only thing I do to prepare is take some iron supplements a few days before because I have low iron and can't donate if I don't take the supplements. Don't exercise on the day you donate, before or…

Yeah, this sounds pretty normal, especially if your body isn't used to heavier weights. It definitely gets easier. After a few weeks of consistent weight lifting, you won't even get that sore after hard workouts. Let your muscles recover a bit and then keep lifting. The key is consistency though. If you only lift weights…

I worked up to 30 minutes at a time, usually every day. Tale of caution: if you are jumping barefoot and/or on a very hard surface, increase your time very slowly to give your feet time to adjust and strengthen. Else you will give yourself a stress fracture that needs 6 weeks to heal. I definitely saw improvements in…

Bike on low resistance, and possibly the elliptical. Or just stick with strength training for a little while. Make sure you're icing those shins!

I've got scoliosis, and a while back I hurt my back somehow and had to be really careful exercising. Sitting hurt. What worked for me was: Tai chi (under a competent instructor - it releases tension in your lower back and strengthens the muscles) Acupuncture (no joke - I was a total skeptic until all my pain went away)…

Have you tried harnesses? Leash on a collar never worked with my cats, but they really can't do much about a leash on a harness. Though one cat really didn't like the harness and always crept around on his belly when it was on. Funny, but no good for walks. The other cat doesn't mind it at all.

Mambo vipi? Mtwara resident here, but not for much longer. Feel free to add me! I get the logging issues... MFP doesn't recognize njugu or ugali....
-
Sounds like there are some issues, but before finding a new place, try talking it over with the instructor. Find out what they expect their members to do/learn and see if it is meshing with what you want to learn, and what people are actually learning. Sometimes schools have periods of transition or struggles, but…

Sounds so cool! Just don't get hit by a deer. Apparently it's a lot more painful without the car. Deer, bobcats, alligators, wild pigs.... the list continues, but those stand out more.

Shoes are optional at my kung fu studio. I normally do all indoor exercise barefoot, but I prefer the Puma Speed Cat for kung fu and for trail running. Lots of people wear Puma shoes at the studio.

Hey there! I'm in Tanzania right now actually. I've been through Arusha a couple of times. I want you to enjoy your time in TZ, but you should know, as a place with a high tourist concentration, Arusha is not entirely safe. Be careful while there, getting taxis, etc. Don't bring anything too valuable. Most young kids have…

Lol, we're on Zanzibar right now "recovering." :P Where did you serve in the PC?

I follow a body weight program ("You are your own gym," but there are many others). Works great with a tight budget, and you can also use what equipment you have, or make some equipment with basic household stuff. I definitely was seeing results within a few weeks by doing serious work about 4 times a week. I don't know if…

Thanks everyone! We actually met quite a few South Africans on the climb. We went through a South African company to find our climbing guides as well, and it all worked out great. You're welcome to TZ!

Thanks you guys! It was so hard but so fun!

I think, to be a well-rounded fighter, you have to practice against people of all types. I think women especially get benefit from sparring with bigger men, but I would be glad to practice with anyone, as long as they were serious about improving. Many women do martial arts for self defense. Who are they trying to defend…

I wouldn't mind staying in Tanzania, as long as I could visit home (America) often. Nice weather, beautiful beaches, and really friendly people.

Well, I suppose I was attempting to contribute to the discussion, starting with my experience in a quasi-hunter-gatherer community, and eventually that led to the differences between farming and hunting and gathering, but since YOU don't think it's valid to this discussion, I guess I'll ask everyone to kindly ignore my…

Actually, based on what I've seen, I think sometimes the farming lifestyle is harder than hunting and gathering. Even for simple sustenance farming, the required amount of land and crop output is pretty large. Now imagine that you have to plow up a several acres of a dry, hard, rocky field every year (by hand). For some of…

Lol, you just named all of the staple foods of where I live. Well, wheat less than others, but definitely corn, rice, beans, and potatoes. And everything cooked with oil, if not fried. The population seems to be generally pretty fit.

I'm living in Tanzania right now, and what amazed me at first is how my neighbors stay fit given their diets. Lots of carbs, lots of fried foods... granted, many are farmers and do get a lot of exercise, but their portion sizes are huge!!! I'm always getting comments about how little I eat, and yet, I've gained weight on a…

I've done both. The gym: Pricey, except when I worked there and exercised for free. Lots of access to machines and equipment. It's easy to hire a personal trainer to get started if you aren't sure what you are doing. Often, gyms have other spiffy things like pools, hot tubs, etc. If you need workout buddies for motivation,…

I work out at home. I've been following the strength training program in the book "You Are Your Own Gym." It's almost entirely body weight exercises. I've gotten great results. It's definitely possible to develop strength at home - for example, you eventually should progress to the one legged squat, one arm pushup, etc.…

I have a laptop. I like the portability of it (got it in college, and was always taking it to class, to friends' houses, to coffee shops, etc). My laptop could always handle my engineering programs, and if I ever needed something more powerful, it would probably be work-related and therefore work-provided. Also, now I…

Are you doing the four days straight in a row? And then taking 3 days off? I did two days, break one day, two more days, break one day, etc. I usually finished the program about a week early this way, but it worked for me and gave me lots of rest time. I do additional strength training and cardio pretty much every day.
