  • Thanks to the butterfly I know my laryngospasm reflex works. During high school season we have two teams, and I'm often sharing the pool with them. One team has lanes 1-4, 5 is lap and 6 is lessons. The second team is larger and has 1-5 and 6 is open for lap. As usual, the inexperienced swimmers are in lane 1 where the…
  • Yeah, I deal with that. I googled like mad and found little info. From what I've found, it can either be a reaction to the chlorine absorbed by the skin or it can be from bacteria that lives in the pool. If it gets worse right when you shower, that's more likely the chlorine because the water soaks in and takes the…
  • I'm not offended, but I would respond with "thanks captain obvious." It's not like I don't know that I'm fat.
  • /\ | This Enjoy the smell. There are many things worse. Most people will just think you smell clean. I don't know if there is any anti-bacterial properties to my sweat, but it does smell a bit like chlorine when it first starts.
  • You know what I hate? Hearing "Swimming isn't a hard workout, you push off the wall and float along to the other side of the pool." I've yet to be taken up on the offer of going for a swim together so they can show me how easy it is.
  • If the reason they won't put them in is because of laziness, ask if they'll let you put them in and then take them back out. Our swim teams put them in and take them out when they use the pool. Lap swimmers in the morning also have permission to add lane lines if they aren't there, so long as the management knows that the…
  • Well it isn't a what I hate but is a bit funny about swimming ettiquite. Tonight I wanted to share a lane, and I waited until the gal came down and stopped. I asked her if she wanted to circle swim or split left and right. She said she didn't care, so I suggested splitting. She was just a tiny bit faster than me. After…
  • You know what I hate............ I hate that larger ladies don't realize the implication of buoyancy vs. gravity that fat has. That the swimsuit that is tight down below on land isn't tight when the fat floats up instead of hangs down. That in some cases the bottom of their suit is 6" away from their ahem... lady bits....…
  • I recently saw a gal at the pool that pulled off a bikini and was probably a US size 16. She had great genetics to hide the fat. She had very wide hips, so even at her size she had thigh gap. She didn't have cellulite, she carried all the fat deep instead of under the skin.
  • Well I was borderline on BP before, but now I'm good since I've lost weight and am working out. I wasn't specific enough: I had no visible veins before I lost weight. Now I've got them. When they go from not visible to visible, it's almost like the "pop" out in a short period of time. When they do that, they hurt for a…
  • 500: 9:35. Was a little over 11 min at the start of the year and cracked 10 min for the first time in June.
  • If I lap swim during the open swim time, I know I'm going to get lots of yahoos in the pool and plan on not getting a hard workout in that time. If somebody is going slow enough, I'll catch my breath behind them and then dive and pass under them and keep going past them.
  • I can state I had the same thought. Ditto. I start thinking "oh man, I don't want to back off." I can add: "When you can stay on the bottom of the deep end for long enough that the teenagers forget you're down there and start getting all touchy-feely thinking there is no one looking at them."
  • I really try to swim before class, but it's hard to get away from work most days to be there before the pool. Swimming is far more cardio, hands down. I've tried laps after class but it kills me. Now I've decided that if I can't get there in time to do both, I'm just doing my laps.
  • I'm one of those 'cheaters' that calls 1750 a mile. My goal is to be under 30 minutes for a 1750. In January I was at 41 minutes for a 1750. Tonight I did 34:33 for the mile and a total of 44 laps in 43:25. This is the first time I've been able to hold a sub minute lap time for the whole swim.
  • 7 more pounds to go for me. It's going to be nice to see that sometime later this summer.
  • I want to be able to swim a mile under 25 minutes. I don't have a goal for when, I'm just going to keep at it.
  • Just plain WOW! Good for you, that's very impressive.
  • Wow! 220 in one day is rather impressive. I've thought about trying some really long distance swims again. I did 106 laps (3 miles) last year, it was nearly 3 hours. I suspect I could do it short of two hours now.
  • I was crunched for time tonight, only did 15 laps. But I took another 4 seconds off that time from just two days ago. The cool part with the lap timer is that I could go back and see where I was for the 500 - 9:55.8, and 14:55 for the whole 15 laps. I also did a 36:04 mile yesterday - a new PB by a minute from last month.
  • Good tip on the cramps. I had a LOT of problems with that in the first year of lap swimming. *KNOCK ON WOOD* I have not had problems in quite a while, but if I do I'll try that.
  • Congrats! Those feel SOOOO good.
  • I can't speak for the OP, but this is how I read that too. It's the presumption that somehow you've figured out some trick, some easy way. And it's a bit infuriating because it minimizes what I've done so far.
  • Cheaters are evil, despicable people. Just sayin. Leave, don't cheat.
  • One more than the guy you're dating.
  • Those are good rules even without a history. Far too many aren't successful at tap dancing the edge and end up heartbroken.
  • One of the things that I love about the digital counter is that a big personal goal of mine was to see how far I could go without any break to a freestyle stroke. All side breathing, all flip turns and no pause of any kind. So far I've done 50 laps that way twice. Any more than that and my problem is that I've got to get…
  • Since we went on the hijack topic: I love my lap counter. I bought the one that keeps track of every split and I love it. The nice part is that when I was learning to use it, I could go back and see if I missed a click or double clicked by looking at the split times. I figured out that for me, it was best to just record…
  • I agree with LGcentaur. This sounds a lot more like a food allergy. I don't have a problem with dairy but a lot of other foods bother me, and what you describe is what happens to me when I eat one of my problem foods.
  • All light mayo and some regular mayo has paprika. I'm allergic to paprika. That means no mayo for me unless I'm certain of the brand and type - hence no mayo on anything dining out. That certainly helps my fat count on any sandwich.
