  • 629 calories already today shoveling snow! AND I saved $50 skipping the plow guy! Let it snow!
  • If you use the Search feature above, you'll find many threads on this. I love my Polar HRM. Get one with a chest strap. It's not uncomfortable and much more accurate. Good luck!
  • be careful you're not overtraining. maybe consider some cross training? Some cycling, swimming, elliptical ... overtraining can cause stress fractures. a symptom of stress fractures is that the pain goes away once you've been running for a while. good luck!

  • grapefruit juice & vodka is yummy.
  • I also opened the thread looking for a date & time! How about cut peaches and homemade whipped cream on the side (then your calorie-counting guests can just enjoy the fruit). Snyders organic oat bran pretzels (18/120 cal serving & 2 g of fiber!) Trader Joes Spizzico di pizza - tiny frozen pizzas - like bagel bites, but so…
  • you have made it so far! keep up the good work! Congrats on all the progress you've already made!
  • so great! thanks for posting!
  • I'm dreading an upcoming 2 week vacation, not so much for getting out of the habit of logging here, but how to keep on the straight and narrow when I'm away. I'm hoping I'll have internet access where we are! But, if not, I'm planning on carrying a note pad and the paper calorie counter (how "2000 and late"!) and praying I…
  • this is how I stay motivated! I keep the bigger clothes around and try them on. And then I put on a target garment! It's a great way to visualize my goals! Congrats!

  • a feature to consider on any HRM if you're interested in counting calories: at what heart rate does it start to "give you credit" for exercise calories? on my polar (a few yrs old now), I have to be at 100bpm. when I walk, sometimes I'm below that. would love to know how new polars and the reebok ones handle this. get the…
  • thank you for this post.

  • 64oz soda bottles, gallons of water, a laundy basket full of heavy household items, a child (I do lunges with my kids on my back), books in a backpack, a bowling ball
  • I was researching exercises for my PT job and came across a very tasty weight-gain recipe on a site called something like testosterone.com. I slimmed it down for me but the original was something like cooked oatmeal, maple syrup and peanut butter. OMG! It's like eating a reeses pbter cup! check out the recs on the…
  • 1) I am SO jealous. Miss the city soooo much. Keep up the walking!! 2) I read the subject line and thought you would be telling the story of my (current) life (I enjoyed your ice cream quest despite the fact that it wasn't the anecdote I was expecting!). What do I walk for? I walk for pretzels. I spin for a glass of wine.…
  • I also have Hashimoto's & hypothyroidism (diagnosed around 40). Just finished reading The Thyroid Diet by Mary G. Shomon. Get it from the library or buy it used on half.com - it was very informative about the syndrome, but not worth the $15 cover price. I find my synthroid dosage (started at 25mcg, now up to 88) works well…
  • absolutely not. Look for some good exercises online for variety. Try Shape's and Self Magazine's websites as starters!
  • thank you!! I have had so much fun on it! Even made myself into Beyonce! :-)
  • If you don't consume enough NET calories (calories in-calories burned), your body may go into "starvation" mode. I think 1200 NET calories is a safe level to consume. HTH.
  • With this much exercise, I think the biggest thing to consider is the possibility of an overuse injury. It could happen anywhere: the ball of your foot, your ankle, your knee or your hip flexor/hip. If you overtrain and get an overuse injury (think the stress fracture that this last season's Biggest Loser constestant…
  • I always thought it would be useful for a device to beep every minute for interval training. then you could run a minute, walk two, etc. without having to have your wrist in front of your face.... that said, your fellow gym users will really appreciate you turning OFF the sound of your HRM because you will likely be…
  • my chest strap doesn't slip and I wear it under my jogbra strap. I see other women's much lower. I sweat a ton during spin and have never had it move. Sorry, can't answer the other question, except that I love my HRM.
  • I have a Polar. On MINE it doesn't track calories until your HR exceeds 100 bpm. For me, that is a brisk walk. Chasing a child may not get you there ... at least not consistently ... I don't know if it's different in the other brands. I LOVE that I can use mine to track my calories on machines at the gym. I can do 10…
  • I always weigh myself first thing in the morning when I"m the lightest, and use that as my benchmark going forward. your weight after you eat and drink isn't meaningful! I can even fluctuate morning to morning by up to 3 pounds - there's nothing like a sushi dinner to mask weightloss, for example (a lot of sodium in the…
  • there are so many good snacks available these days! multigrain goldfish! kashi-type granola bars. multigrain pretzels (I could live on Snyder's Organic Oatbran pretzel sticks - 18 for only 120 calories!). I also love the popcorn idea -though we serve it straight from the hot air popper. get them involved in making it and…
  • Along the lines of MissMessy's comments: Why not google your local track club and pick out a race to train for. Also as mentioned before, the couch to 5k program is a good one (google that, too!). This weekend, my husband and I "wogged" a 5k race and there were a ton of families there doing it. They were very welcoming. I…
  • There is SUCH AN EASY WAY to make steel cut oatmeal: Overnight Oatmeal - google it for recipes by real cooks - I'm a faker! Buy BULK steel cut oats to economize Before Bed: measure oats and rinse them in a fine mesh strainer (I wouldn't feel the need to rinse boxed steel cut oats) put in a sauce pan with four times the…
  • many hotels have guest arrangements with a local gym. Also, if you are a gym member, bring your card - a local gym may have a reciprocal arrangement. I like the above stairwell & hall idea. Also perimeter of the hotel at dawn! Bring a pedometer and your ipod! good luck!
  • Nothing new to add, just my experience. Hypoactive thyroid and the only symptoms were lethargy and an inability to lose weight (seemingly hungry all the time). Now I'm on synthroid after being diagnosed. Also, I love my caffeine. I'll go from only drinking one cup of tea a day to my current (3 or 4 plus a free cup of…
  • I've tried WW on line and this is definitely better!
