  • If it's only a few lbs, I would suspect water weight and muscle gain. I wouldn't stress about it. Are you measuring yourself? That's a FAR better indicator than the scale (and scales are frequently inaccurate).
  • IME, an ideal day consists of my calories naturally distributed like this: 25% from Protein 25% from Carbs 50% from Fat and I've found that many (most??) others following Paleo have that same breakdown. HTH! edited to add: I don't pay any attention to cholesterol - eating high cholesterol healthy foods (like eggs) does NOT…
  • I don't feel guilty, but I don't feel good, either. I never thought I would say this but I could aaaaaalmost give up alcohol completely. Ever since getting on the Paleo/Primal wagon I just don't enjoy a drink like I used to. I get hangover effects from less than 2 glasses of wine. :-/

  • You need to actually work on those muscles, not just do cardio. Squats, lunges, strength training, Brazillian Butt Builder-type stuff.
  • Eat fajitas without the tortilla. With the ~120 calories you save, you can eat a lot more meat, veggies, and guacamole! Plus protein and healthy carbs are proven to make you feel full longer without the resulting blood sugar crash. As far as PB&J sandwiches, well, I don't eat those because they are so high in sugar and I…
  • Your statement is not correct, but you're not alone -- a lot of people are mistaken about what GMO actually means. GMO does NOT equal hybridization. Genetically modified plants have been modified to withstand heavy-duty pesticides. GMO crops can be and are sprayed with RoundUp. Which we then eat. Pretty sure I don't want…
  • Look, I'm in the ad industry. If advertising didn't work, no one would be doing it. If ads didn't make people desire what they see (no matter how unrealistic or truly impossible it may be) then companies wouldn't pour billions into it. You ARE affected, whether you admit it or not. It's there, in your brain, in your…
  • You don't deprive your body of energy by reducing carbs. Your body will burn FAT for energy, rather than glucose -- like it should.
  • I shoot for 75 grams per day. Some days I'm a bit over, some days I'm a bit under; it all averages out for the week. The lower I go the better I feel.
  • Personally, I'd chuckle at the heavy cream because I prefer it -- it's much lower carb than milk!! Fat does not make you fat, people! But as far as the lying & the sabotage... that's really, really messed up. What kind of parent would do that kind of thing?? I imagine your mom's got a serious case of jealousy. As a parent…
  • ALL real food has calories. I like real food. Chemical sauce on my meals does not appeal to me.
  • 5'5" - Currently just under 110, don't think I'll go below 108. After that it's strength training, so I'll ignore the weight and just stick to measurements!. I have a small frame so I definitely need to weigh less than most women to look as good as they do.
  • I had a mini (HA!) size vanilla malt from Sonic. Thankfully I didn't finish it. I'm mostly Paleo/Primal and all that sugar started to make me feel sick. The whole thing is 490 cal!!!! I seriously don't understand how they fit that many calories into it. It must have HFCS or something. A large of the same is 1700! That's…
  • I keep mine to use. It's so salty nothing will grow in it! Keeps forever. I keep mine in a quart size Ball jar since it is tempered glass. To strain I do this: Take a cone-shaped coffee filter and fit it in the mouth of the jar, with the top edge of the filter folded over the mouth. Screw on the ring for the ball jar (not…
  • Basically, if it's not in the house they can't have it -- so if my kids ask for toast and I haven't made bread (I still make it on occasion for them), then it's just simply, "Sorry, we don't have any! But I do have x, would you like that?" Sometimes I comment on the fact that we're cutting back on whatever it is, but I…
  • Maybe your body is fighting off an illness (even if you're asymptomatic), in which case it needs to keep the liver freed up to do its job as efficiently as possible. Maybe it's doing something else. Who knows? A few days/a week/ 2 weeks of low calories or fasting won't hurt and is even beneficial. Just be sure to drink a…
  • I think most programs exaggerate the number of calories truly needed to support BFing. Now that said, the more you're nursing, the more you'll need. Listen to your body -- if you're maintaining your milk supply then you're fine. If it starts getting low, then get more food, sleep & water, and supplement with fenugreek if…
  • Actually, you can't always tell from looking. I have it, and it's not visible, but if I press where my belly button is I can feel the separation in the muscles. It's super common in women who've given birth. For the skin -- massage with coconut oil, exercise, lose weight... you will see an improvement, but how much will be…
  • Like the others said, it depends. Do you have a diastasis rectii? That can account for a lot of flabbiness in the abdomen. If so, there are some exercises you can do to bring the muscles back together (like the tupler technique), or there's the option of a tummy tuck to sew them back together. Losing fat will bring it down…
  • Why not go for a fitting and just let them know your budget before they begin picking out shoes? They might have a pair on sale.
  • Protein will give you the most long-term bang for your caloric buck. 2 scrambled eggs is 140 calories, throw in a ton of (low-carb) veggies, voila!
  • I would take out the sugar as much as possible (and don't sub with fake sugar!), and reduce processed carbs/white bread/pasta. When I went lower carb weight fell off with very little effort, and the increase in protein and healthy fat makes me feel fuller, longer. When I eat a high carb meal (bread, pasta, etc) I'm almost…
  • I think having my label checked would be really, really degrading... but then again these women aren't being forced into it. As far as a preference for women under size 10, of course that's not offensive. Different men have different preferences. There are groups for men seeking plus-sized women, too.
  • Well the professor was wrong, sorry! But at least now you know and can research it for yourself. "Authorities" are no more infallible or less prone to bias than anyone else -- it's always good to question assumptions with actual research. Mark Sisson has a good summary on saturated fats here:…

  • What you're describing is VERY typical for those that go low-sugar/low-processed carbs. When I first went Primal (love it!) I felt like I had the flu for about 4 days; felt yucky for about a week. But I knew what it was from and so I just pushed on through. After that passed I felt AWESOME. From everything I've read it's…
  • I do this too. I also enter in my meals before I eat them -- that way I can see how the calories are distributed and adjust accordingly -- i.e. eat more of the food that's "worth it," calorie-wise. But I don't stress too much if I go over -- I plan for about 100 calories less than I should, just because that works for me…
  • Cooking spray is nasty. Don't use that, use real food. Healthy fat is good for you (fat does not make you fat!). Butter is awesome, but if you want to change it up, coconut oil or lard/tallow are good too. Olive oil is for low-temp cooking only -- it converts at high temps and is no longer healthy.
