  • Anyone remember that episode on Friends where it was a young Monica and Rachel at Chandler and Ross' college party ... The "fat" Monica excitedly said I've lost 3 pounds! Yet, she obviously was still very large and 3 pounds was definitely not noticeable. (Then, a pizza was delivered and it was for her.) I've felt like that…
  • I will have to find that recipe for egg drop soup at home! Good idea!
  • Back hurts all the time ... fighting plantars fasciitis, so my foot always hurts. I try to get a 15 minute walk in all the same. Shoulder still hurts from shoulder surgery 15 months ago. Believe it or not, 3 years ago I had no aches or pains. I'm 55 and feel much older. Weight is so slow to come off! I've lost about 8…
  • Probably 25-30 pounds overweight. I am doing mild activity -- recovering from a foot injury.
  • I think it could be a good idea and $20 a week is very reasonable. I was referred to a weight loss clinic by my family physician and I had a very sour result. For one thing, I'm on a high deductible HSA so everything is out of pocket at this point, so I've spent about $250-300 a month the past couple of months. Secondly, I…
  • Also, now I discover my "pre-diabetic" levels of 101 for fasting glucose and 5.7 for A1C. That is barely a whisper into the pre-diabetic stage! I'm concerned. I have been going to a weight management internist/nurse practitioner that keep saying I have a metabolic disorder which my family doctor has never been concerned…
  • Just curious, since you remained pre-diabetic for 10 years, did you then become diabetic after that time, or control it down to lower than pre-diabetic? Also, the nurse practitioner today said I could instead take Januvia in the morning and Metformin at night ... but Januvia has the side effect of potentially causing…
  • Take a look at sodium. Over the past weekend, I was within my 1200 calorie limit ... got on the scales Sunday morning -- up 2 pounds. By Monday morning, lost 2.4 pounds. You can sure bet I was worried over the weekend, then looked at the sodium content of a chicken salad sandwich I had eaten from Firehouse Subs. Don't…
  • I put it in there frozen with some Ro-tel. Once it's cooked (3-4 hours), drain most of the Ro-tel off, take it out and shred it, then add taco seasoning. So good for chicken soft tacos or other chicken dishes!
  • I went prom dress shopping with my daughter over the weekend. I try to avoid mirrors but caught a glimpse of myself ... in a grossly oversized t-shirt and very baggy and unflattering jeans. (Now, I thought I was wearing tight clothes.) I saw myself the way others probably see me (frumpy) because I am still hiding the body…
  • This is exactly my journey! I started again in January - disappointed to only lose 8 pounds, but trying to stay positive. I also lose 15 pounds, gain it back ... lose it again. I want to get past that 15 pound loss and keep going! Cynthia
  • I'm not diabetic at this time ... the dr. says I have a "metabolic disorder" since my insulin levels are on the high range of normal. They are trying to use the Metformin to keep the carbs from converting into belly fat and also to prevent the associated diabetes in the future with the higher insulin levels. So far, I've…
  • Put on a shirt/jeans you haven't had the courage to put on in 6 weeks. I was so frustrated that I was limping along and "getting nowhere" then dressed up a bit over the weekend. The clothes felt so much better than before. My family remarked that I looked nice. Those are the other benefits, besides what the scale says!
  • Good question ... I'm not sure about retaining water. Swimming would be good for my foot, but I don't have access to a pool, other than buying a gym membership. I have not historically been very good about using the gym membership, having joined and dropped about 4 times. It seems absurd that a couple of weeks of hard work…
  • Maybe go to the dr. You may have a metabolic disorder .. it's not always as simple as "you're eating too much".
  • Thank you ... I see the nurse practitioner tomorrow so I'll discuss this with her. I'm spending a lot of money on a weight loss management physician group, which I think is also fueling my frustration. The analytical side of me is saying "Okay you've spent $500 on dr. visits and lost 7 pounds. That's $71 a pound." But I am…
  • Your dietician will likely tell you to cut the carbs and eat a lot of green vegetables. Also, eating things in the right combination ... which for me just added a lot of "work" and additional frustration because now I could no longer eat a serving of mashed potatoes and peas since those are both starches, for example. I…
  • Hey, tough love isn't warranted. If someone is reaching out because they're frustrated and new to MFP, how about a little compassion?
  • I'm already set for 1.5 or 2 pounds a week (I think) ... 1200 calories a day. Can't go any lower than that. Just doesn't seem to be working that well for me. I exercise moderately (walking) and am a little restricted due to recovering from a foot injury. Not making excuses and I suppose if that 1/2 pound a week turned into…
  • You did a great job -- really, just consider that it shows up in red because it is useful advice. I'd rather see it in red when I undereat, than a big red blast when I've gone over. Now that would be discouraging!
  • If it helps, count up the calories and the damage. I you have a 500 calorie deficit, and you ate 500 extra calories then all it will do will delay your weight loss by one day. If you ate 1000 calories extra, then you'd have delayed it by 2 days, if you see what I mean. If you did that once a week, then it would mean you…
  • I don't have a "check-in" day. I weigh myself regularly, but then only record when I lose weight in MFP. It becomes sort of a game with me ... and actually encourages me because I want to "check-in". For me, the ups and downs are discouraging.
  • One meal won't ruin you .. enjoy, eat in moderation, and just make an honest guess for tracking in MFP. It doesn't mean you're not in control ... next day just go back to doing what you do.
  • Oh yes. I think just about everyone gets discouraged. Just set your expectations realistically and see where you are a month from now. Even if you only drop a pound or two ... that's 12-24 pounds in a year. That may not sound like much, but time goes quickly and I'd love to be 24 pounds thinner!
  • Well, I am 55 and started January 27. Not a lot of exercise but have religiously logged on MFP and stayed within my 1200 calories a day 99% of the time. I have lost 5.5 pounds, and 4 pounds of that was the first week. (Less exercise due to problems with my feet and shoulder). I cannot tell you how discouraged I am.
  • I had the same experience ... so frustrated to work so hard and see no "progress" for a week or more. Keep doing what you're doing. One day you'll drop another pound ... then another. And you may be gaining some muscle, which helps in the weight loss. Don't give up!!!
  • Well, 128 pounds is a pretty good weight for 5'2". I think 108 would be a bit too light ... not sure that would look healthy?
  • That's great - you've had succeess before and you only gained back 20 due to medical problems. You could have gained back the entire 38 pounds lost and them some! Slow and steady ... keep focused ... that's what I tell myself!
  • Plan ahead and use your crockpot ... this way everything is ready and you don't have the stress of throwing together something healthy and satisfying at the last minute.
  • Oh yes .. right there with you. I'm 55, 5'3" and about 159 pounds. Unfortunately, I cannot have any "cheat" days AT ALL or I have no progress. And the progress is very, very slow. We are here to support you!
