My weight loss campaign includes a "beer a day" rule. Exactly one craft beer (no more, no less) every day. And I've enjoyed my share of success. Yes: I've found 2-5 beers to be problematic too. And I'm not big on hard liquor--I just don't trust it. But in my experience, 1 beer doesn't lead to "drunk munchies" (obviously it…

You're thinking too hard. I simply took a quintessential reading from a Christian wedding ceremony and manipulated it into a justification for this ridiculous idea of marrying one's self. Though in my opinion . . . Anyone who follows through on this self-marriage idea deserves to have half their possessions taken from them.

I just can't help imagining Mark Ch. 10 on its head: "For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to [himself], and the [one] shall [remain] one flesh. Therefore what God has [not] joined together, [any] human being [may] separate."

I was withdrawing money at my local bank, and the teller asked for my ID. I give it to him, he looks at it for a few seconds before asking "So how'd you do it?" "How'd I do what?" "Says here you weigh 280. No you don't. How'd you lose the weight?" "Calorie counting and exercise. No more complicated than that."

I'm a former video game addict. I still have that appreciation, and I look every so often at what's new, but I rarely find time to these days. Also big on board games, card games, sports (which are nothing more than physically-demanding games), all kinds of games. Weight loss would be much easier if it were itself a game.…

210 pounds, As of today I'm 250 pounds. Wife and I are trying to conceive. I can't make the case for children to be healthy and active if I'm not healthy and active; I'd feel like a hypocrite and my children wouldn't take me seriously.

I play hurling in the United States. (I know that doesn't count, but I appreciate Irish culture.)

Reading and walking is the best advantage of the treadmill IMO. But you'd better do something to pass the time; if not the treadmill can be gouge-your-eyes-out boring! I know people who park the treadmill in front of Netflix--which is a good idea too. I knew a woman who would read and walk on the local park's trails. How…

Outside sales with bad eating habits is an unfortunate combination. I spend about 20% of my business days out of the office, and that's when I'm most tempted. If you're a burger-and-fries type, start by getting rid of the bun. I've started a crusade against bread because, if we can be intellectually honest, isn't the stuff…

A few things: 1. The articles you mention are self-defeating. To believe them is to accept accuses why you can't--and then you'll never succeed. Do not read any more of these articles. 2. If you acknowledge you'd like to eat less sugar and processed food, then I'd propose you try Paleo, or a variation (like whole30). Not…

Do you have a question for MFP staff that MFP users cannot answer? Unless I'm mistaken, the diet-and-exercise-related questions can be handled quite effectively by MFP's usership. You should try asking your question here.

Some might say I "yo-yo", but each time I rebound I only gain about half of my losses back before something inspires me to re-start. The first time I started I was approaching 300 pounds, and I REALLY didn't want my weight to start with "3". Another time I re-started was during a spike in my business travel, and I REALLY…

Clif bars. The kind you're looking for should be in the neighborhood of 20g protein. I eat the Aldi alternative, Elevation bars (see what they did there?). Their Chocolate Mint flavor is 260 cal, 20g protein and tastes exactly like mint chocolate chip ice cream.

This. The treadmill is a good alternative to walking outside when it's raining, but I'd rather gouge my eyes out than spend more than 45 minutes on the treadmill. For this reason, if you use a treadmill DO take advantage of the incline, making the treadmill session slightly more difficult and thus burn slightly more…

Podcasts and audiobooks. Whatever you're interested in. Oh, music? Sorry, can't help you there.

I need an athlete on my Friends List. Add me if you like. Background on me: I'm 31, from the United States, and play in a recreational city hurling league (the Irish sport) to stay active. Competition is a great motivator. When I started the game 8 years ago I was 230 lb, was in OK physical shape but lacked in the game's…

Unless you need it for business purposes, or for advertising, I always recommend that those who complain about FB deactivate their account for a week, and just see what happens. How much people invest themselves emotionally into a website that's 90% garbage; it's insane. To "unfriend" someone is likened to a formal…

Have you been doing body measurements? If you haven't, start now. If you're measuring smaller, you're getting smaller. I can't imagine losing that much weight without losing inches too--and sometimes you'll lose inches instead of pounds, which can discourage those who don't know better.

"80 percent behavior, 20 percent head knowledge." Rough estimates, of course--in fact, quoted directly from a non-weight-loss context, though the basic idea applies. Behavior, driven by good habits, and by willpower to overcome the bad habits. Many people succumb to the bad habits when their willpower runs out, when the…

I'm a genealogy buff, and DNA is revolutionary for learning about your family history. But, for the purposes of "DNA testing for weight loss", unless you have some sort of medical condition (and your doctor will tell you that for considerably less than $500) your formula for success should be the same as anyone else's.

The latest thing I'm listening to on my runs is an 11-hour program that's a best-of for 4 renowned success coaches. 11 hours of material will last me about 2 weeks of runs. Philosophies about how to succeed in life, and inspiring stories of everyday people succeeding, weight loss or otherwise, never get old for me. Your…

Recently my motivation has been "Man, I just got rid of my bigger pants last year, I REALLY don't want to buy those bigger pants again." So that's my strategy: Whenever I can, I buy smaller pants and throw out all the bigger ones. My weight loss plan coincides with a tight budget, and I make sure that next-size-up clothes…

I don't know your really great guy, but he wants you to be a better person--and it sounds like he's generally allowing you to define "better". I could write a list a mile long of the ways my wife has made me a better person, and vice versa, and that concept of "making each other better" is (I think) the cornerstone of a…

As you've noticed there are 3 camps here: 1. Every day (my preference): Good because you can log your weight daily, and see the daily changes. You can also make a 'science' out of it, so you have a better idea how your body reacts to certain factors from the day before. Bad if you let the number on the scale affect your…

I'd go with a granola bar w/ protein. You can find a decent one in the 100-150 cal range.

My goal is my dream: 27 BMI: 210 lb. I understand those people who say "Well, I'd love to be XXX but I'll settle for XXX." And to be fair, I have a magic-number weight I'd be content with that I know I'll have to struggle with in due time. But if you're defining success, why settle?

Stevia? Not creamer, but it will make your coffee taste like something other than coffee (the typical motivation of creamer users).

Not sure that's what he meant. Lonsy: That's how faith works. If you'll accept the idea that Alcoholics' Anonymous (AA) is successful method of recovery for alcoholics (because it is), the crux of AA is admitting that the person is powerless without the help of a higher power, which they call "God as we understand him." A…
