I put kale in my smoothies, and just about anything else. I like to add it tomato sauce for pasta, or curries. Baby spinach is good in salads. However, because it contains a form of mineral iron, if you want to get calcium from it, steam or boil it for about one minute. It works well in soups, curries, chili, pasta, etc.

Great post. I've always been a fan of empirical data. Well done, sir.

I will second the PPK: http://www.theppk.com/recipes/ Isa is a goddess, and her recipes will make an omni drool. I would also recommend Virginia Messina's site, as she is a RD with much experience and has an excellent guide on her site for vegan nutrition: http://www.theveganrd.com/vegan-for-life

Amazing! You look fantastic. Keep up the good work now that you've achieved it.

I don't know. I was swimming in the Gulf of Mexico when I was 5, and I lived on the west coast of Florida for 3 years and swimming in the ocean is something I've always done. I've never considered dangerous, even if I was doing it alone. Now, if we're talking about at night all bets are off.

Yeah, I seem to do the same. I don't pay that much attention to my net. It seems like most days I'm eating about my BMR, or maybe a bit more on the days I work out. Also, sometimes I know I'm off on my eating and exercise calories. Pretty much I just eat healthy and when I am hungry. So long as I'm losing weight (and not…

Ha. Thanks for the laugh. What does one do with wine ice cubes? I suppose you could cook with them. Or use them in a vodka and soda?

Has anyone mentioned Turtle Island Tofurky products? Yeah, they're processed, but one of their sausages has a whopping 27 grams of protein. I don't eat them that often, but when I need a fast meal after getting home late at night from the gym I grill one up with some veggies. Throw in a little quinoa pasta with some…

Eh, it looks fine to me. That's sort of a normal day for me and I'm losing weight. It's fine to eat when your hungry, and It isn't like you went 500 calories over your goal. I wouldn't worry about it.

I have a trainer and she's the manager of all the PT's at my gym. She did my initial assessment and we hit it off from the start. I got four free sessions for joining the gym and I just started working with her last week. She's helping me learn my way around and helping me correct some bad lifting habits, She doesn't stand…

Stay on your soapbox because you are right on target. The drug companies would go crazy if the government so much as lifts one little finger to change things. Not to mention that the government also subsidies the very corn that makes all of the processed food so cheap. Here in Texas I think the CDC may be right. I was just…

Unless you have a medical reason for not eating them, you shouldn't feel guilty for eating any foods. Bananas have protein and potassium along with sugars and carbs, and are a good source of energy. Just like everything else, it is about portions. Now, if you are eating ten bananas as a snack that's a different discussion…

I would say I am more intrinsic, almost to fault, because if I don't enjoy doing something I find it hard to do. For getting fit and healthy my motivation is decidedly intrinsic. If fits in to a bigger picture for me, about being healthy ( and in turn, happier) for the rest of my life. I also might add that I look forward…

If you are wanting to add strength training to your work out, I think a session with a good personal trainer might help. He or she can make certain you are using correct form, which is important because if you don't you could end up getting injured or not getting the most out of your workout. Note that I said a good…

I do HIT on the treadmill and bike. To the poster who asked, to do it on treadmill you vary speed and incline every 2 minutes or so. At least that's how I do it.

I guess about 1 pound per week. I've been on MPF for about 3 weeks and I've lost 4 pounds. I have upped my net to about 1700-1800 per day over the past couple of weeks.

I have a Brtta pitcher. I filter the water and keep a jug in the fridge with it. I also use it for tea, coffee, etc. I think it does a good enough job, as the filtered water tastes good. I prefer using filtered water, because plastic bottles of all kinds can leak BPA, and there is virtually no regulation on the content of…

Do both. Strength training to maintain as much lean mass as possible, and cardio for health and to aid fat burning. I weight train 4 days a week and do 30 minutes of interval cardio three of those days. On the other days I just do light walking or stretching. Mix up the cardio (use different machines) and do intervals and…

Glad to hear you're working on the chill and soups, One thing I always have around is frozen mixed vegetables. That way, if I'm in a pinch I just throw a bag in with some beans and either veg broth (for soup) or diced tomatoes for chill. Bang, zoom, done...I make those occasionally in the morning before work when I'm too…

Hi. Don't be scared. Like everyone else has said, just start by walking. If you don't want to walk outside, look for a walking DVD like one of Leslie Sansone's. Remember, the journey of 1000 miles begins with one step. Once you realize how good it feels to move your body you can move on to bigger and more fun challenges.…

I just started weight training again and this is the first time I've done it on an all plant-based diet. I can usually get between 100-125 grams of protein without going over my calories, which might be okay since right now I'm at about 129 LBM. I do have a Vega One shake most days and sometimes protein bars (which I…

Yeah, I don't know. The upright bikes at my gym show 274 per hour at light activity (I'm 5'11" and about 189 right now). I also think MFP reports calorie burn at too high of a level. A HRM would be more accurate, but without one I still think 15 minutes of light activity would not be that high.

Right now I do weight training 4 times per week ( I'm just starting back and have some weak areas to work on). I do 30 minutes of HIT cardio on three of those days. On the other days I only do a little bit of flexibility stuff. My PT doesn't want me doing tons of cardio so that I won't lose too much muscle mass while…

Okay, I get your point now. Let's put it this way... Many vegetarians are that way for ethical reasons (most I would guess). Some take up a plant-based diet for health reasons. Vegetarians come in all sizes and shapes and levels of fitness (just like omnivores, paleos, pescatarians, or any other eating style). Smart…

I am a vegan, and I would never presume to push my lifestyle on anyone. If this woman actually behaved that way, she was extremely rude and possibly nuts. However, I don't see how that prompts a vegetarian-baiting post. As for vegetarians being unhealthy and unfit I know of many who are world-class athletes, and I'm a…

5-6 Three meals and two or three snacks, depending on the calories throughout the day.

Amazing! You look great. Keep up the good work. Your family must be very proud of your accomplishments!

This is my personal take on it, and anyone can agree or disagree as they please. My PT wants me to gain six pounds of muscle and lose about twenty pounds over the next few months. She told me to do interval cardio three days a week and strength train four. She told be that too much cardio is counter-productive while trying…

Yes, I believe I remember a double -blind study proving this. However, the subjects who ate the cupcakes died happy at least.
