  • Strava is fun. And if you're a faster-ish runner you can try and get King of the Mountain (or in my case Queen) of all the segments on your running routes.

  • Running makes me hungry and I have no trouble out eating my calorie burn. I prelog my food and plan very carefully what I'm going to eat every day so I get the most food for my calories. Lots of veggies and fruit, eggs, cottage cheese, greek yogurt, oatmeal. Stuff that will fill me up. I try to stay away from white bread,…
  • After I ran my first marathon I felt like a legit runner.
  • That's a good plan. There are lots of good apps to track your workouts. Runkeeper, Runtastic, Nike+, Endomondo, Strava, you just have to decide which one works best for you. Happy running and congrats on doing the C25K!!
  • It takes practice. I was never a morning person, loved staying up late and sleeping in. Once I had kids that all went out the window and then once I started running I got up even earlier to be up before the kids. You just keep doing it until it becomes normal. Go to bed earlier. Set your coffee pot to have coffee ready for…
  • Losing weight is all about the food. I can gain weight running 50 miles a week. Yes, exercise does burn calories but it also tends to make you hungrier. If you're not seeing the results you want on the scale you need to dial in your nutrition.

  • You absolutely can do a 5k. Make that your goal. Get the couch to 5k app and get started. I was the same as you, a walker who had never run. I thought "maybe" someday in my dreams I could do a 5k. Well in the 2 years since I started with C25K I have done multiple 5k's, 10k's, half marathons and a full marathon. Go for…
  • You expect the water to be around 4 degrees Celsius? I hope you are planning on wearing a wet suit?
  • I use runtastic and a Garmin watch. The app is pretty accurate as far as distance. It's a little high on the calories burned though. I would not eat those all back, it's over estimating.
  • So yesterday I did 11 miles in full sun with a temp of 95. It wasn't the most fun but it's manageable. Sure you're going to get very very sweaty. I lost almost 4 pounds in water and that was after drinking over 60 ounces. However, I took a frozen water bottle and stashed it on my route in a flower bed. I did a set of loops…
  • My nose runs a lot, I used to carry kleenex but it's too hot now, it just gets soaked with sweat in about 5 seconds and becomes useless. So I have perfected the farmer's blow. I don't really care that it's not ladylike. Nobody said running was glamourous.
  • It is absolutely acceptable. I do it myself on occasion and I frequently see others doing it and also lots of guys running shirtless. There is no rule about having to have 6 pack abs in order to be comfortable while running. I do occasionally get some "looks" but I could really care less.
  • If you want to learn how to run do the couch to 5k program. It will build up your endurance. Run slowly, slow enough to have a conversation. Be consistent and you will be running in no time.
  • Fast finish long run. Doing a couple of your 20 mile runs finishing (last 5 or 6 miles) at marathon pace. Was a great confidence booster going into the marathon.
  • Join a running group that does early morning runs or meet up with some local running friends and form your own running posse. If you don't have running friends, make some!! It's easy to do through facebook, etc.
  • This chart is ridiculous. Apparently I shouldn't run for the next 4 months, or if I do I should slow it down to a walk. Not gonna happen.
  • Month to date... Bike 146.4 Run 72.4 Swim 442 yards.
  • The machines in the gym are not very accurate. I can usually take what they say I burn and cut it in half or down to a third and it will line up with what my HRM says. MFP database burn numbers are even further off.
  • If I am reading this correctly you are saying you are burning 1800 calories a day doing 40 minutes of intense cardio? That is extremely unlikely. You don't burn that many calories doing the spin bike and the elliptical. It's more likely you are only burning a couple hundred calories and are not at all in the extreme…
  • I have done several races with finisher shirts. Houston Marathon and Woodlands Marathon to name a couple. It's a huge PITA if you ask me. The last thing I feel like doing after running a big race is standing in line to get my shirt. But I guess they do it so they really are finisher shirts. If you don't finish the race you…
  • I wear a HRM when I ride to calculate calories burned. Usually I can cut in half and sometimes even a third of what MFP says the burn is and what the actual burn is. For a 90 minute ride at that speed I would burn under 500 calories.
  • C'mon, you can do a sub 20. I believe in you.
  • This. I take water for over a half marathon distance. (I also live in one of the hottest cities in America)
  • I did this during training for my last marathon. However I did eat more on the long run day. It worked pretty well for me overall. And hey, I'm doing NYC in November too!!
  • That sounds perfect!!!
  • I am no expert, obviously. But we have similar 5k PR's and I was just thinking about this this morning if I were to do another what would my strategy be. I would probably try to go out at a 7:10 and do even splits. However, if the conditions were perfect and I was feeling good I might try for 7's. What is the weather…
  • Join us here...http://www.myfitnesspal.com/forums/show/111-long-distance-runners Tons of people who have run multiple marathons and can help you with any questions you have with training and racing. Congrats on getting into London!!!
  • I usually only use fuel on the 20 mile runs and then just to practice what to do for the marathon. I take about one gel with water every 5 miles, which is about every 45 minutes for me. During the race I alternated water stations with gatorade and water. Don't take gatorade with a gel. Try a bunch of different kinds. Some…
  • I have to disagree here. If the OP was only running 15 miles per week that is not a significant enough base to even think of adding speedwork. Get up to 35+ miles per week and then maybe think about it. And chances are if she were doing 35+ miles per week that half time/race pace would come down significantly on it's own.
