  • Great job and congrats on your first half!!! I really enjoyed your blog post.
  • I ended up with 131 miles for August. Far from my goal and below June & July. It was a tough decision to skip several runs but it was needed to get my achilles tendonitis under control. Now it's getting much better and I am cleared to run as many miles as I am comfortable with, just no speedwork right now. This first week…
  • ^^This Knowing the course ahead of time has always helped me a lot for a trail race. If the trail is not very technical you will be fine with normal running shoes. But be prepared to get them a bit dirty. Have fun and keep your eyes on the trail ahead of you at all times.
  • Had another good visit with the chiro yesterday. My progress has been great, even after a 15-mile run on Sunday (my longest run yet). She said I don't need to come in again this week and one more visit next week should be all I need. Still can't do speedwork or hills but I can do a few pickups in the middle of my easy…
  • Yesterday was another great visit with the chiro. I can't say enough good things about her. She's an ultra runner so she understands us (she's doing a 200-mile race in two weeks!). More re-aligning the hip and now she's getting into all the hip flexors and loosening those up. My calf & hamstring are starting to loosen up…
  • Last night I did 6.5 miles and my achilles felt better than the night before. The run was much slower than Tuesday's run which probably made a difference. I think I am going to slow down all my runs for now and just focus on building endurance. 11 weeks until the marathon!
  • I am trying to wean myself off support shoes. I do some running each week in a neutral shoe with arch support inserts and it seems to work well. I just didn't have my inserts with me when I did those test runs. But still trying to find that perfect shoe, like trying to find the Holy Grail!
  • Sorry to hear that. Good decision to rest it. Don't run through pain like me! Since the chiro gave me the OK the run, but avoid hills, I went to the track yesterday and did some easy running while my wife did a crazy 20x400m workout. I ran 3 miles at first to see how my achilles was feeling. Stopped for some stretching…
  • Just got back from seeing the doctor. She gave me the OK to run again starting tomorrow. Slow at first, no hills, no speedwork. She said my left leg is longer, causing some SI-joint misalignment and affecting my hamstring & calves making them very tight. That eventually led to an angry achilles tendon. No major tendonitis…
  • I've taken the PI N2's out for a test drive on a couple of local group trail runs and they were OK but lacking in arch support. After 5 miles I could feel my feet complaining. My go-to trail shoe is the Montrail Bajada (I have two pairs).
  • I decided to take a week off running due to some achilles pain that won't go away. It's hasn't gotten any worse but it's not getting better either. I should have stopped 3 weeks ago when the pain first started but it's so hard to stop running. The decision really bothered me for a while but I think I'm over it now. I'll…
  • Sorry to hear that. Definitely talk with the people at the store and explain what you are experiencing. My store will exchange shoes if they are causing a problem even after 100 miles or more (if they fitted you in the first place). After nearly 2 years of running I am still trying to figure out the right shoe. I think I…
  • Had a good week of training totaling 39.6 miles - my highest weekly mileage yet. I ended the week with my longest run ever - 14.3 miles at 8:43 avg pace. This week I should finally crack 40 miles for the week. Got a 15 mile long run coming up this weekend.
  • It's been a pretty good week so far even with the hot weather. Tuesday was a nice 6.4 mile run with the regular group where I got to test drive the ASICS GT-2000. Did not love the shoe but didn't hate it either. Wednesday was an easy (but hot) 7.5 mile run by myself in lieu of speedwork. No fast running until my achilles…
  • Way to go!!! Congrats!
  • After a frustrating end to July, August is looking a little better. Last week, just as I thought I was getting over my knee issues I got a sudden sharp pain in my achilles tendon while stretching after last Tuesday's run. My heel has been sore for a while but nothing major. I think something finally tore loose during that…
  • 2 out of 3 ain't bad right? I did not go to the gym all month but I have been doing some strength training at home twice a week. Mainly focused on the hips right now. I hit 154 miles but am ending the month by skipping today's run. As soon as my knee got better my achilles tendon started hurting. Gotta get that under…
  • Similar to last month - keep following my training plan and surpass 160 miles for the month. I give up on trying to get back into the gym right now. It's just not gonna happen. But I am working on hip strength and some light upper body stuff at home twice a week.
  • +1 But get that run done tomorrow! Take it slow - the run will aid in your recovery.
  • Whew, it was a busy week of training but I made it all the way through without skipping a run. My knee is feeling better but not 100% back to normal yet. I ran 38.5 miles last week which is a new high. And I just hit 140 miles for the month. By Thursday I should be over 150 for July. Yesterday I started something new with…
  • Laura, sorry to hear about your PTT. I've been through that. And I still get occasional pain there in both legs. Not much you can do except back off the mileage, rest as much as possible, and ice it daily. Even now I still ice the inside of both shins every night. I think it is related to the type of shoes and/or arch…
  • It would have been great if the gov't had the foresight to create a nice greenway from Lake Lanier all the way down to Atlanta. They own a lot of land along the river. But I am glad they are preserving what they can.
  • Cool! The Chattahoochee River has a lot of great trails. I haven't fully explored all the trails up here near my house. And I probably won't until winter. They have not kept up the trails and they are pretty overgrown right now with lots of snakes around. At least in winter I won't be in danger of stepping on a copperhead!
  • Way to go!! Wow, running hard on vacation! We are staying at the Holiday Inn Express on Bay Street. It's expensive for Fri & Sat but it will be nice to have the starting corrals right in front of the hotel. I'm still looking for someplace to stay one night on Tybee Island after the weekend. Haven't seen the ocean in a long…
  • A little far for you but the Albany Marathon here in Georgia is in early March. Lots of people BQ there. I'm signed up for it and it will be my 2nd marathon.
  • 1. You have to figure out what socks work for you. I typically wear Thorlo & Injinji socks and find that the Injinji (five-toe socks) are best for long runs. 2. I like the data from my Garmin 620. At a minimum I think you need distance & pace for training. Heart rate is nice to know but not absolutely essential. 3. Usually…
  • Congrats Laura!! Good luck on the next one! I just finished my last trail race of the series and it's good to have that done. Now I have 6 weeks until my next race and it will be nice to get a break from races until then. Here's a summary of the year so far: 1/18 Dirty Spokes Central Park 3.5 Mile Trail Run Race, Cumming,…
  • Well, I think I am getting my mojo back! My knee is still not back to 100% but it's not getting worse. Yesterday's trail race really helped my overall attitude and got me fired up again to run. Saturday morning we woke up to the sound of pouring rain and that was pretty much the way it was all morning. The rain let up a…
  • I've been struggling with some knee issues lately and haven't been able to keep up with my training plan. It has really zapped my motivation and overall attitude towards running. Hopefully it's just a brief phase and I'll get my mojo back soon. Skipped one run last week and will be skipping today's run too. Early this…
  • Had a good run on one of the local greenways today. The plan was 13 miles but I did 13.1 just because. Except for something stinging my finger and hurting like hell the whole run I felt great. I even pushed the last mile to 7:27 pace and ended up at 8:59 average for the entire run. Hard to believe I can run that distance…
