  • Alcohol in moderation has benefits. So far, my head hasn't exploded and my liver hasn't shifted out of place. All my measured blood test numbers are fine. I lost 90 lbs while having a couple of drinks a week. The key to all of this (including other foods) is moderation. And logging. BTW, some studies have shown that low…
  • I did it at 60. All it took was my doctor saying to me, "You're Type II. Keep it up and your feet will fall off." I got serious about it the next day, went to a great nutrition class at a local hospital, dropped 80 lbs and have kept it off. Diet, exercising, logging, measuring food and MFP support. I take no meds and my…
  • There is one reason to eat breakfast. A good breakfast tends to decrease your hunger for the rest of the day. But, if you can work around it, who cares.
  • I generally suggest 35% carbs, 40% protein and 25% fats. [/quote] My research indicates that those are ratio's for body builders and athletes. For mere mortals the suggested ratios are carbs 40-45%, protein about 30%, fats about 25%.
  • Made my day!
  • The latest research I've read on drinking 8 cups of water a days is that is such much hokum. When you think about it, your body is pretty darn good about telling you when you are thirsty. Over time, your body will regulate your water intake so that it gets as much water as you need on a daily basis. Recent studies have…
  • I burn about 400 per hour when I'm working out, but my heart rate is in the 125 range. On the other hand, I'm 66. I think a sustained 160 is pretty high.
  • Hummus instead of mayo (on sandwiches).
  • Check out Trader Joe's branded sprouted breads. 60 calories per slice, low in carbs, high in fiber and tasty.

  • Yes, I agree they need well-designed studies. My real thinking goes like this. N of 1 studies prove nothing. Not everyone gets cancer from smoking. When some says that they don't have side effects from diet cokes, I have no reason to disbelieve them, but it proves nothing. Any molecule we ingest is capable of having a side…
  • Yup, that's why its correlative. Just like the science on smoking was. It took over a 100 years to even figure out how aspirin works.
  • Here you go: Not a smoking gun, but suggestive: http://marystod.blogspot.com/2011/08/aspartame-diet-drinks-cause-wt-gain-in.html Nutrition studies are, as this article suggests, always difficult. Too many uncontrolled variables. The science may never be anything but correlational, not causitive. Even so , it is suggestive.…
  • Can you walk or swim?
  • Mine does too. Some days, I really, really hate my hrm.

  • I think that a good quality HRM is probably more accurate than gym machines as gym machines typically do not know your body statistics. A good quality HRM, especially one that makes a stab at your max V02 is probably as close as you're going to get. And even they are formulaic, so they're going to be off.
  • If the human body needed to be cleansed, someone would have already setup a drive through.

  • You should eat carbs and you have a choice: good carbs or bad carbs. Bad carbs are typically refined sugars, bad bread, etc. Good carbs veggies, fruits, whole grains) are nutritionally better for you. But a carb is a carb is carb, so yes, carbs in fruit count. You can subtract fiber from the carb count if you eat 5 grams…
  • A bmi calculator can give you an estimate, but it will vary depending on build, lean muscle mass, etc. For men, a waist in the 32 - 34 in range is probably close to your bmi weight.
  • .37 times your weight in pounds is a good estimate for protein intake if you are not an endurance/resistance workout athlete.
  • The sugar values are actually a subset of your carb values. If your carbs are where you want them, I wouldn't worry too much about the sugar value. The nutrition class I attended basically told me to ignore the sugar value and just watch my (good) carb intake.

  • No, but it may make you sick. You need good carbs in your diet. One of the frequent (but not only) recommended nutrient breakdowns is 40/30/30 (carbs, protein, fat) respectively. Your body needs carbs for quick energy conversion. By good carbs, you're looking for whole grains, fruits and vegetables. BTW, frozen fruits and…
  • Yow!
  • Just think how great you'll feel if you finish running all the way. And just think how great you'll feel if you have to finish walking. Either way, it's an accomplishment you can be proud of. Just being willing to try something you're afraid of puts you in the major leagues.
  • Avocados are great for you. You need good quality fats in your diet and avos provide them. I eat them a lot. You daily fat intake should be about 25 - 30% of good fats. Good fats actually help you lose weight. Bad fats (transfats, poly and mono unsaturated) should be minimized. Other good fats are nuts, olive oil and fatty…
  • iSmoothRun. Bonzo great.
  • You've lost 34 lbs. Don't beat yourself up because you've already done good. As for slipping, hell,we all do it. Just pick yourself up, shake yourself off, and start all over again. I found it helps to build some slippage into your diet so you don't feel guilty about it. I allow myself some bad stuff several times a week…
