  • I am 6 ft, started at 272 now down to 226. I started with the elliptical 20 mintues daily, and machine weights. Gradually upped my elliptical until I was doing 60 minutes, 6 days a week, and switched over to stronglifts 5x5, now switching over to starting strenggth 3x 5 as I am not progressing well with the 5x5. Doing…
  • One thing that I found helpful is practicing the squat while facing a wall. Start about a foot away, and move closer as you improve your technique, until you can do it with your toes just a couple of inches from the wall. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2pye8XXTf7c Mike
  • I recently started taking a probiotic for my ibs and for the first time in about 20 yrs got a little constipated. I took some fiber, without bothering to research it, and boy did I regret it. Since then I researched the topic, and the two brands of fiber that reportedly have much less gas as a side effect are Citrucel and…
  • There was an article in usa today recently that stated that low wt/ high reps was effective. As I recall, the recommendation was to do reps to failure in under 90 seconds. I can't find the usa today article right now, but this one seems to have the same info: http://healthyliving.azcentral.com/high-reps-training-11078.html…

  • There are multiple hiit timers on the app store, just do a search for hiit and for interval timer. I tried out several before I found the one I liked best. Just download a bunch of the free ones until you find one that does what you want. Mike
  • Military.com has some recommendations. http://www.military.com/military-fitness/army-basic-training/getting-prepared-for-bootcamp Mike
  • The arc trainer is definitely much harder than the elliptical. In fact, it is what I use for my HIIT days. Like any exercise, just increase the time that you do weekly. If 5 minutes is all you can do to start, then you might consider going up by a minute or 2 weekly. Is the five minutes at the lowest resistance setting? if…

  • Wow, I can't believe you would even CONSIDER jogging/running after a hip replacement. Surely your doctor gave you info about what is acceptable activitiy. • Definitely call the dish peaple. Is the treadmill new? Electrical equipment can cause ground loop intereference. The treadmill could just put lots of electrical noise out, but I all the treadmills I see at the gym these days have a tv built right into the machine, so there might be a short or something. You could check out…
  • That is the problem with belly fat, it is what shows instead of the six pack underneath. There is no way to target that fat, the only thing to do is to lose it. Look on youtube or at Scoobys website about six packs. Scooby says to have a six pack you have to be at 7% fat or below. From his web site: 1.To have abs, you need…
  • I like to use the elliptical at the gym due to my history of plantar fasciitis. It is a Precore and I really like it. You can spend from a few hundred to several thousand dollars on an elliptical, so your price range can vay a lot. The main thing I think would be to look at a consumer review site. Just some general info:…
  • The authors of nrflfw also have a general new rules for lifting for life, in addition to a new rules of lifting for men. You might want to go to the local book store and see if they are that much different IE worth paying the extra bucks for. Mike
  • I like Scoobys calculator: http://scoobysworkshop.com/calorie-calculator/ He has a link there to a more complicated version, if you want to sic your math whiz husband on it. Mike
  • I put up with it for about 18 months, doing all of the suggested things that help (stretching, ice, nsaids, rest, various insoles, etc. It would seem to get better, but then whenever I would do the least little thing it would flare up again. I finally gave up and went to a podiatrist. 2 steroids shots later, completely…
  • I won't embarress myself by telling how much I can lift, but I wonder why you are doing so many reps. Most of the things I read talk about only doing 8-12 at the most, seems like 20 is overkill and you need to increase the weight and decrease the reps. Mike
  • I seem to recall reading an article recently that suggested that eggs are not as bad as they used to think they are. The recommendation was for no more than 7 whole eggs a week to help limit the amount of cholesterol you consume. So if you don't eat eggs often, enjoy the whole egg. Mike
  • If you are staying up more than the usual time, say 20 hours instead of 16, you are burning more calories than if you are sleeping, So when i change over to the night shift, I allow myself a few more calories on that day. So I would not worry about going over calories a little on that day. How much you would go over is up…
