  • I second what PedalHound said!! I'm also a whole-food fan and try not to buy anything made with anything I can't pronounce  Rosie - a friend of mine told me that Agave Nectar has a lower GI than cane sugar (or processed sugar), and is a good subsitute in a pinch. My husband is diabetic (not insulin dependent), and…
  • Yes, I've read The Secret (and seen the movie). I was not totally comfortable with the material (especially the movie) since it came off as a pushy "buy-me!!" advertisement on how to get a Mercedes and a million bucks. While I like money just as much as the next guy, it certainly isn't the reason I get out of bed each day…
  • The apartment complex we lived in before did allow for people to get out of the lease if they found someone to take over, so we posted it on Craigslist and offered 2 months free, no deposit, etc. That helped get it off our hands for the rest of the year!
  • Well, when I kick board at the pool (with my HRM) I burn about 10 calories per 10 minutes if I work at maximum, otherwise it will be roughly 5-7 calories per 10 minutes if I'm taking it easy. I would just log your time as swimming - easy from MFP that way you won't over-estimate. BTW - do you have a HRM?
  • Catchy title...lol. You can do some kicking exercises - like with a kickboard or just holding on the wall and kicking. Also there is a move called "eggbeaters" where you keep your arms above the water (at the elbow) and beat your legs around (not touching the bottom) - try to hold that for 20 seconds, rest 10 seconds, and…
  • I get dizzy spells pretty frequently - my BP is usually very low (90/60) and my resting HR is around 55 - so when I sit or stand quickly - I see stars. If I don't eat frequently, my blood sugar crashes and I get dizzy - so I always have food with me in case I'm feeling shakey. My mom has the same thing - I just try to make…
  • I just went out for sushi and ordered Pomegranate Green Tea to drink (it's cold, unsweetened ice tea - comes in a glass bottle and made by The Republic of Tea.) WOW! It taste like pom juice with flowery undertones - so good! I had to look up the nutritional facts online - 0 calories, 0 carbs - all natural, no sugar…
  • Wow - that's hard! My husband is not on the healthy-meal-plan bandwagon (kids are too young - they have to eat what I make), but I do all the shopping, so I only buy healthy food. However, when DH goes to the store, he will buy unhealthy things (last week he came home from Costco with a huge pack of danishes, crossiants,…
  • I love to go for walks and swim with my kiddos (ages 3, 7, and 9) - but if you need to build some endurance before walking on uneven terrain (hilly?) - why not dance? My kids LOVE to dance, and you can dance in your house or in the backyard and get a good workout - just put on some good ol' tunes and start cuttin' a rug!…
  • I'm sorry you are feeling this way...sending you e-flowers :flowerforyou: :flowerforyou: :flowerforyou: I've been there too - when everything just seems to be too hard or too much for me to handle. One thing that helps is writing - specifically I wrote down a list of things I want, and how I would achieve it. Then I just…
  • Sometimes I'm hestiant to comment on people's weight loss - I don't want my friends thinking I'm keeping track of their poundage...you know? It really doesn't matter, and I'd much rather comment on something like an achievement or job, etc. When people I haven't seen in a while tell me - OMG you've lost a TON of weight -…
  • Seeds of Change makes some fabulous varieties of dark chocolate (which I also love - the darker, the better!!) I just picked up some Mango-Cashew dark chocolate in SF last weekend. I've also tried spicy dark chocolate with cinnamon and chilies - woweeeee! I MUST have my dark chocolate everyday (just a square....)
  • I like to eat a whole wheat pita with sheep cheese and organic cherry spread (yum!) Also, Trader Joe's sells Ginger Chips - which are basically dried ginger slivers with a bit of cane sugar coating. They are spicy so I can't eat too much, and low in cals. I can't do rice cakes, traditional chips, or cracker things - I'll…
  • I really enjoyed the Red Tent as well! It was so well written and gives an entirely new spin on a very old story.... I've read some of Sophie Kinsella's books (shopaholic, etc.) and I really enjoyed Remember Me? Sometimes you just need a light-hearted, LOL book to unwind to
  • I hear you on the lack of (physically present) avid readers - basically my mom, sister and I are the only hard-core readers in our circle of friends/family. I will check out In Defense of Food. Have you read "Three Cups of Tea"? It's on my to-read list, and is also a memior. And, like you, I've really become aware of the…
  • I know - that's why I don't do bagels, lol! (Her bagel was about 400 plus she goes double whammy with the cream cheese.) :frown: Anyways, how do you calculate your normal burn? Is the adjusted value what you log in for exercise?
  • I workout at 5:30 AM every morning, and I HATE to eat early in the morning, so I just eat 1/4 of a Clif Bar with water before working out for some carb energy (so my body doesn't think we need to go in starvation mode), and then after work out I eat one stick of string cheese for protein/recovery snack. Later in the…
  • Fast Food Nation is an eye opener! I also liked The Omnivore's Dilemma by Michael Pollan. I didn't like Eat Love Pray that much - I know it was on the best seller list, but it seemed more like a brag book than a true-life memoir *shrug*
  • Hmmm....I've never heard of a buttery taste. But I have experienced a metallic taste in my mouth that would not go away with brushing, etc. - I get that when my fat intake is too low on occasion. If it bothers you - ask your doctor!
  • What is the brand and model number?
  • Hey Lauryn! What's the status on your laptop and book club launch-off???? Molly (MPF Book Club Fan)
  • I think he mentioned he was waxing his body for a body-building event. So it's kinda like a before-and-after, or maybe he got cold feet (foot) and only half way through it

  • I noticed you said you used to swim in your profile - why not start swimming again (join Master's) if you want to up your workout? I swam competively in high school and now swim with Master's and burn about 600 calories an hour during swim practice.

  • Went to Angel Island in Tiburon yesterday (Bay Area - Marin County, CA). Took the ferry out to the island - hiked up to Mount Livermore (4-ish mile RT), walked around the island - checked out old abandoned buildings. Rested at Quarry beach - no swimming - LOTS of jellyfish; I'm not sure why - they seemed dead but I didn't…
  • I second Shorerider. Without the strap, you won't be able to track your HR and calories burned over time. You will need to stop what you are doing every few minutes to put your fingers on the watch to get a HR reading - kinda a pain and for $60 - you can put a couple more bucks on top of that and get a Polar F-4 or F-6…
  • Ohhhhhh snap!!   *jumps and runs out* BTW - thanks for clearing that up - learn something new everyday (scraper......interesting....)
  • Banks - I thought we also want to have enough indigestible fiber since that helps "move" things out, keeps you feeling full and reduces fat absorbption....or am I wrong???
  • You look fabulous in both pictures - but loving the muscle tone! I'm down to the last 5-10ish pounds and trying to get things toned up. How much weight did you lose to tone up?
  • Calorie-wise - diet/crystal light will not have that much of an impact. Health-wise (effects over time) - the jury is still out. You're going to find camps that support all varying degrees of thought on this topic - it really comes down to personal preference and what you feel comfty with. I used to be a splenda fan -…
  • I think it depends how you define "full serving" - because there are other things added to V-8 (like alotta sodium - yikers!) and you don't get the benefit of fiber and chewing (I love to chew!) as you would with whole, raw fruits/veggies. You might get a full serving of vitamin C, etc. I personally don't like any kind of…
