  • I've suffered hypoglycemia for years. Eat low-carb, but don't worry about low-calorie to begin with - you will adjust in about 2-3 weeks at the most. It feels terrible for the first little while, but eventually you'll regain your energy. Adjust your calories once you get your blood sugar stable. Good luck!! :)
  • Leftovers from dinner the night before always suit me :)
  • It's in fish, liver, chicken, eggs, cauliflower (but in minute amounts), spinach, kidney beans, quinoa, grapefruit, brown rice, almonds, peanuts... lots of good stuff :)

  • I don't usually ask for much because my family doesn't have a lot of $$. This year I've asked for a DVD (conveniently, an old movie, so not expensive), knitting supplies, and my old standby: socks! Every year my dad picks my socks. He says, "I just pick out the pair I know no one would like, and guaranteed you'll love…
  • I will give this a shot, and maybe use a nice light Subway sub as a treat for myself :)
  • Yeah, Ophiuchus. 'Cos that's where the sun was when I was born. ::tralala::
  • You both look fabulous! Thank you for sharing :)
  • Schedule your weekends to be like your weekdays - plan your meals and exercise the way you do Monday to Friday, and avoid the pitfalls that way :)
  • I steam them, and put on a little butter/salt/pepper. On the grill, lemon/oil/salt/pepper. They're delicious!!
  • Good post. When people start blethering to me about their "organic" and "natural" foods, I point out that the coca plant is all natural; does that make cocaine a healthy addition to the diet? I don't think so. :)
  • Ha! Lucky. My family don't drink, so wine's not an issue (we have an alcoholic in the family, so it's a no-no, and I don't mind!). We will be having a turkey; I will simply avoid the stuffing and gravy. I may treat myself to a small potato, but there will be salad and other veggies, as well as all the good crudites. We…
  • Picky person needs to grow up and eat his veggies - also, if he's not cooking, he should just eat what he gets. If he wants to eat something else, let him cook. Seriously. I have very little patience with people who consciously or unconsciously sabotage the efforts of someone they love. If he doesn't have genuine food…
  • There are a gazillion variations on alfredo sauce (just stay away from the blush sauces that contain tomato). In addition you might want to try your pasta al olio - with olive oil, sauteed garlic, and if you like a bit of parm sprinkled on top (that's my favourite). I'm not allergic to tomatoes but they do trigger bad…
  • Nuts are a great snack - take some dry-roasted unsalted almonds! Dried fruit or fruit-and-nut mixes are another solution if you don't need to keep an eye on your blood sugar.
  • Agree with Sara - maybe give in on a couple of things that aren't too bad (for the mental health aspect), but get him healthier versions of others. Get the best ramen noodles so he can have a comfort snack - the good ones taste great with a cup of frozen chopped veggies tossed in :) Tell him that you don't want junk in…
  • Miracle noodles are made of konnyaku, which is in turn made of a fibrous plant. Low in calories and taste, high in fibre - it's actually quite yummy and gluten-free. The noodles are chewy, though, nothing like wheat pasta or anything. I love the stuff. I'll be interested to know what you think of the noodles as "spaghetti".
  • ::LOL:: This just made my day, "little skinny girls in booty shorts making you feel bad". Zackly!!
  • Sounds like an excuse. If you're a young professional as you claim, surely you know some people who aren't constantly partying and sucking back liquor; make friends who aren't going to tempt you to sabotage your own efforts :)
  • Atkins.com is entirely low-carb, and without resorting to their brand-name products they still have lots of recipes for low-carb living.
  • I love drinking water - it's no hardship for me to drink enough during a day. When I'm drinking enough water my skin is clear and I never feel bloated (not even during TOM). When I haven't drunk enough my lips start to chap and I can get headaches - and if I go long enough without enough water, my face breaks out. So I've…
  • Hi and welcome! :) So glad you're enjoying the positive atmosphere here!
  • It's a measuring-cup cup, i.e., 8 fluid oz (ounces are different for solids). :)
  • I'll jump in on the bandwagon and point out that it does have to be blackened (charred to a crisp) in order to produce the possibility of carcinogens (if it was a guarantee there would be almost no one left on the planet except the vegetarians, and then the cows would run rampant and eat the rest of humanity, so it's a…
  • Think long-term. You've lost seven pounds already; more will go. You know that the gin is an issue so next week don't overdo on it (mixers tend to be sugary). You may be one of those of us who don't do well on low-cal but will on low-carb instead (up the protein/healthy fats and get rid of stumbling blocks like sugar,…
  • You completed it, which is fantastic in any case - and you weren't too far off your goal. You'll do even better next time! Congrats!!
  • Are you eating vegetarian or did you neglect to mention meat/fish? That may be the "hearty" part that you're feeling like you're missing, if you're not getting enough protein. If you're going veggie (not necessarily vegan), get some lentils, beans, tofu, eggs and other natural proteins into your meals. Good luck!
  • Depends on who you mean by "people", because I know people who work very successfully from home, and who separate life from work with some success (some more than others - self-employment can unfortunately really blur the lines). I suspect that your issue is that people assume that because you're working at home you can…
  • Alas, clothing sizes vary so much by manufacturer that it's hard to tell what might fit and what might not. Here, I'm a size 14 at one store, 16 at another, 18 at most, and 22 in some of the boutique-type stores. That's aside from the "L-XL-XXL" type of sizing, which also varies widely. So, while it's no help to hear, you…
  • This is the right place to be for support and encouragement (and the mobile app is fabulous, so you don't have to worry about forgetting something while you're out!). Welcome!!

  • Eat something proteiny, like almonds or a piece of cheese. I actually eat low-carb as I have blood sugar issues, so this might not work for you, but one of my favourite snacks is a slice of lean ham (I usually get it extremely thin-cut or shaved at the deli), wrapped around a slice of cheese or a tablespoon of shredded…
