If anyone is still interested: I got a heart rate monitor and messured my poi spinning. For 80 minutes it says 802 calories burned. it is pretty accurat I guess. As said I do this with a lot of movements and not just in place. I would compare it with jazz dance actually :)

I'm from Germany and you don't need to worry. In big cities it's no problem to find the food you need. The opening hours are something you've to get used to though ;) loved the 24 hours shops in New York when I was there.
