  • I'm sorry about your news, Susan. And it doesn't sound like it was handled very well by the staff at the eye clinic. I hope you have a better appointment with the retinal specialist and that there's something they can do to help. And to find out about the dental problem on the same day! I hope things brighten up for you.…

  • So funny about the carbs turing to sugar thing! I think we women all learned that in cookery class many years ago (back in my day girls and boys were segregated when it came to things like cookery or woodwork) and the men missed out? Weighing in on the fat thing, I've done low fat eating in the past, and it seems to make…

  • Thank you for the early morning laugh, Suzy! So funny! So true too (I'm useless at that kind of exercise). And Gail, your comment about mis-spelling Milove's name - "we don't even know each other that well" - I can't stop laughing! You ladies are on form today!

  • Oh, and thanks for the video, Snoozie! It's really good! Interesting information about power - I was much less aware of that than I was of strength. I do think there's a gap in the market for classes/training for "older" women.

  • Wow, lots to read! Statins ... I have known heart disease, and I'm told that statins aren't so controversial in that case (secondary prevention rather than primary prevention), and are recommended. I have been taking a statin for over 10 years now. I would love to stop as my cholesterol is low, but there's the chance of…

  • Thank you! Yes, that is exactly what I look like, down to the figure! Lol! We don't actually take the books along with us to the group, and just talk while walking, but sometimes chat on the bike rides too, which makes me a bit nervous as I'm still nervous on the bike! But it's nice that it's sociable.

  • Well done on the workout, Milove, and on doubling your weights! I'm envious of the Swedish massage! Enjoy the books, Suzy, and well done on the weight loss! I have several books, because it seems I would rather read than do - lol! I hope the tendinitis clears up. Could you just leg work until then? Maybe not ... It's…

  • What an incredible view, Suzy! I hope you enjoyed the hike. You always impress me with your hiking. It's something I used to love years ago, but I think I'd struggle now. The leaves here are maybe past there best, so many have fallen off the trees now. I went for a cycle ride with the new cycle group yesterday. They…

  • You are so right about starting five years ago - how much harder would it be now if we hadn't started back then, despite all the ups and downs? And I'm with you on the posting - I tend to read the posts, but I'm rushing off somewhere so I think I'll wait until I have time to think about it and then something else gets in…

  • Thanks, Snooozie! Yes, I couldn't believe it when I found out about the walking book group! It's exactly the sort of thing I wanted to do! My previous hours of work meant that I couldn't go, but my hours changed recently and I sometimes have that day off. But what I'm really hoping is that the group is still going when…

  • I have been "lurking" here, but reading, and really appreciated your thoughts, Snooozie. I've been on a bit of a downer recently, but I'm not going to go into that after reading your inspiring posts! Instead I'll mention a postive - I found out that there is a walking book group (like a normal book group, but you talk…

  • Suzy, at least it was just one meal! And I do think that social eating like that doesn't "count" to some extent - I know it does obviously, calorie-wise, but what's life if you can't enjoy a pizza with your parents now and then? I was thinking about what you said in your post yesterday about enjoying your trip (it sounds…

  • Definitely quiet! I am kind of lurking in shame as my eating has not been good over the past week, and I'm seeing the results on the scale. I'm astounded how quickly the weight goes on when I slip up! However, something cheered up - somebody linked to this modified BMI chart on facebook: http://www.smartbmicalculator.com/.…

  • Thanks for the thoughts about menopause, Snooozie. I can't have HRT because of my heart disease, unfortunately (I have friends who swear by it!). On the good side, I know it's something that will eventually pass! In a few years - lol! And it's good to know that it's not just me. I'm sorry that you are going through that…

  • That sounds miserable. I hope your ear's OK. Thanks for asking about the meds, Snooozie. Unfortunately, it turns out that Prozac interacts with one of my heart medications, so I've stopped it. I've been given something else, but haven't started taking yet as I want to check it out. Also I have actually been feeling OK ...…

  • Best of luck, Suzy! I hope you have good weather. Snooozie, yes, it's a trade-off when it comes to where to live. I live in a not so good part of town, simply because it was all I could afford. But it's next to the river and there are river paths leading into and out of town, so I can walk or cycle straight into the…

  • I'm the same, Gail. I'm finding it hard to lose the weight, but I know that it's because I'm eating too much - lol! I'm a bit envious of your lake, Snoozie. I would have loved watching the waves. There's something calming about being near big bodies of water, I think. I once lived at the sea (as in a few yards away - it…

  • I'm glad your eyes are OK, Milove. That's another thing about getting older, so many new symptoms and things to worry about! Good luck on your hike, Suzy! I think even contemplating something like that puts you at a younger age - lol! I hope you get good weather conditions for it. My doctor has talked me into Prozac -…

  • Thank you for the congratulation on the 3lb loss, but I have to come clean and say that it was following a gain. Honestly, every time I take my eye of the ball, my weight starts creeping up (I say this as if it's something I have no control over, but you know what I mean!). I'm pleased with the loss, but still have about…

  • It looks like a beautiful day in those pictures, Snooozie. How strange that that woman thought it was smoggy. Suzy, the pork pies at the particular butcher I'm thinking of are amazing! And their sausage rolls, Cornish pasties, steak pies, etc., all with amazing pastry!

  • Congratulations on the loss, Suzy! It's so good to see results when you've been working at it! Well done on your IPOMs, Snoozie! I went to McDonald's a good while ago when I wanted a quick lunch before doing something else - anyway, it just wasn't good at all. Not nearly as nice as something I could have made at home. Of…

  • Oh, definitely agree it's about what works for us individually. We are a long way down the line with sorting out our diets! I would not try to "sell" fasting, as I know some people just don't get on with it. And of course, it's not actually working for me in the sense of losing weight at the moment, because I'm not doing…

  • Hi all! I'm sorry, I have been MIA, long story as usual. I have been reading here, but not commenting. I don't know if I should list all my woes as it would be a huge post! Ha ha! Anyway, it's good to come here and see you talking about the basics of eating. I have not being doing low carb recently. Hoping that fasting…

  • I might be struggling with a reward day today (yes, it's Tuesday!), as I'm fasting and I'm having problems with my knee, so any exercise is difficult. I will resist rewarding myself with a healthy glass of red wine! Normally, I'm pretty good at rewarding myself with healthy food, to be honest - I love the junk stuff too,…

  • I think fresh homemade bread is literally irresistable! I have to avoid making it! I do miss baking. My IPOM was going back to the gym! I'm a member of a gym, and I also go to HIIT classes with another trainer. The exercise classes have more people my age, and more input from the trainer, so I prefer them. I was regularly…

  • How frustrating about your results! Could it just be a one-off? Good luck with the diet changes. I know it's hard when you're busy. Carol, I'm glad your tests were OK! I hope you get what you want retirement-wise.

  • Yes, I know for a fact that I couldn't do shifts any more. Thankfully I don't have to at the moment. I suppose I seem to have heard of a lot of people dying shortly after retirement and I'm aware of not knowing just how much time we've got! My friends who have retired look so much younger and healthier.
in 2017 Comment by Vailara August 2017
  • I've had exactly the same thoughts about retirement and being on my own, Snoozie. I can retire next year - I didn't think I could afford to but circumstances at the moment (long, work-related story!) mean that I might go anyway, and see if I can get by. But I know I'll need to be out and doing things, even if they don't…
