I don't eat back my calories but that is personal preference. I am also on a high protein diet though so I am different than some. As long as you aren't eating really low calories you should be fine either way.

A calorie is just a calorie. However, certain macros affect people differently so it is all about what works for that particular person. Just the amount they are processed is different. I am not a fan of steel cut oats myself. If you don't like them or it takes too long to prepare, it really isn't that big of a deal to switch back to rolled oats.

If you do it correctly and remove the bad carbs which come from refined sugars and processed foods then it is more like paleo which is really great for you. You get to eat more whole and healthy foods and get the most out of your calories. Of course it is hard to eat perfect all the time.
