#1--Go see your doc to rule out anything scary. #2--Barring anything scary, experiment with probiotics. Everyone's gut is different. When I started doing my whey protein smoothies, I had horrible things happening in there. Horrible. I tried Schiff Digestive Advantage--it's in the gas section, but it's not dimethicone like…

Just do it. It's not likely anyone will even notice. If they do, they probably won't care. If they do, then you don't need the drama -- unfriend them, too. You can add me to make up the difference. :) This site is about getting healthy. It's great when we can support each other along the way, but if your friends are making…

What got me started on this path was an elliptical at home (and protein smoothies in the morning). I found my machine for $200 on Overstick; you can find them even cheaper used. I put it in the living room -- doesn't really enhance the decor, but I also can't forget about it. I got up 20 minutes early to work out in the…

I got diagnosed, too -- managed to control it thru diet & exercise, no meds, and made it to 40 weeks with a perfectly healthy little girl. It can get really frustrating, though, since the placenta is constantly changing the game on you. Just when I thought I'd found a good groove, everything would change and my numbers…

I graze at night, which I'm trying to reduce -- but honestly, the only reason I worry about it is because of the calories. For me, I need to eat in the morning, lunch and snacks to feel at my best, so no saving all my calories for night. If you don't need more of your calories earlier to feel at your best (there are some…

I have terrible breakouts every time I return from a deployment. Not during -- my skin is great before and during the deployments, but for months afterwards I'll have full-body breakouts. I just figure it's part delayed reaction, and part toxins and stress leaving my body. My docs agree, for what it's worth. All of that is…

Wow; with as many juicers on these boards as there are, I expected a flood of responses!

Assuming you're eating enough nutrition-wise, I find dark chocolate helps those insane sweet cravings. If you're new to dark chocolate, start at 70% and work your way up; starting at 85 or 90% might be too bitter for you. Anyway, it's chocolate, so it satisfies the sweet tooth (for me), but it's so potent that a little bit…

Not IVF, but IUI -- single parent by choice here. I, too, HATE needles, but the ones I had were hair-thin and short. I had to do the first one in front of the nurse to show I could, and we stood there for about 15 minutes while I worked up the nerve (lots of false starts), but it really didn't hurt. Just keep thinking…

I do not, but my mom & cousin do, so odds are I have a predisposition, unfortunately. Am trying to do everything I can to stave it off. But anyway, the reason I responded is to bring up vitamin D -- I've got long-term muscle pain from an accident, and physical therapy, meds, foam roller, & manipulation have only gone so…

Bumping because my juicer is on order -- I'm also interested in recipes, particularly ones for the leftover "pulp"!
-
Question--with a bladed juicer, how much of the nutrition doesn't make it into the juice? I am contemplating getting a juicer, because I think it woud be an easy way to up my veggie intake, but I'm not sure if it's worth it. I have to wonder how much of the healthy stuff is discarded in the lefover pulp.

Fitbit users, is there an option to turn OFF the auto-synching? A sort of "airplane mode," if you will? I am very interested, but can't have any devices that transmit at work. Not sure they'd even let me use it if I could turn the transmit function off, but if I can disable that, then I'll sure petition for it!
-
Ouch. Have you tried an elliptical? No matter what you do, you'll still need to take it gently. I hurt mine during a pregnancy (so no x-rays to know if it fractured or not), and it was excruciating. I am so sorry -- I hope you are healed soon!
-
Bummer. Unfortunately, I can't use the fitbit because it transmits -- that's not permitted at my work. And I'm not sure how accurate it could be without taking the heart rate into account? It seems the level of effort expended would be a critical part of the calorie equation. how does that work? The fitbit info page is…

My settings are based on a sedentary, butt-in-chair job M-F. So yeah, I give myself credit for household stuff that keeps me moving and lifting. But why does it bother you to think other people are using it as a "cheat" to get out of going to the gym? They're either doing what works for them or not, but it shouldn't affect…

I have several bulging disks in my lower back due to a semi deciding my car needed to be in another lane. Here's what my physical therapist had/has me doing to build core strength -- and it definitely helped. - Crunches on a balance ball. Feet wide on the floor, sit down on the ball and lean back. How far back and forward…

The gym has child care. My house has child care (me). Both are much easier options than finding a babysitter to get a run in (not to mention I can't run because of an injury). Oh, and we have triple-digit weather for most of the day and well into the evening.
-
No time to read 4 pages of responses ... But cardio is important. Anything that gets your heart rate up is good; I can't speak to how long it need to be up for. You don't have to do the machines, though -- make your cardio fun! Take a kickboxing class, go wall-climbing or hiking...lots of options for incorporating fun…

Yogurt, cucumber & lemon juice (just a tad) with either a bit of dill or a bit of cilantro (two very different tastes, both quite good). *ETA: I usually throw a cucumber, lemon juice & cilantro or dill in the food processor, but then I wind up with more than I could use before it goes bad. So I mix some into the yogurt and…

$39 a month for full access to gym, classes (yoga, Zumba, aqua Zumba, aerobics, spinning, boot camp, body flow, etc), indoor pool & child care. But I'm in small-town TX... *Oh yeah, they also have two massage therapists--not included in the membership fees, but they're on site, which means I can use the child care.
-
Please don't think this is normal -- great for the Zumba teacher, assuming her baby is healthy, but most women will have gained more than 1 lb at 5 months. Everyone is different, and you will hear stories like this that might make you feel bad about yourself if you gain more. Some people gain slowly & steadily throughout…

Talk to your OB--he/she will be able to tailor advice to your specific situation. But GENERALLY SPEAKING, the goal is 25 lbs. depending on where you start, people may need to gain more or less. Keep logging your food; pregnancy may cause some crazy cravings, but your body's actual caloric needs only go up about 300…

Just take a few different classes and see what works for you. Most places offer walk-in rates (even gyms that charge memberships) for people who are exploring. You can research the different kinds of yoga online (Wikipedia has a nice breakout), but ultimately, the only way to know what works for you is to try it. Some…

I agree with the posters that say healthy doesn't have to be expensive -- but it will be if you're still buying the processed stuff, too. Soup can be really inexpensive, and you can make a big batch and freeze portions for later (I usually get 12 to 14 two-cup servings from a single batch; perfect for taking as lunch at…

Unless you're going on some crazy diet, what you're preparing should be healthy and tasty, yes? If your husband doesn't want to join you, he can make his own food. You can't force him to see the light, but you don't have to enable him, either. Your child is old enough to learn about healthy eating, although I do understand…

Sorry, am just replying w/out reading all the responses, but just wanted to let you know that it took me 20 lbs before I noticed ANY difference, and that was going from 165 to 145 at 5'6". You probably haven't taken body measurements -- what about doing that now, for the next time you don't see the progress the scale is…
