  • As is reading comprehension -- the above was in reference to his objection to the use of the word "organic."

  • Umm...so what quick, easy-to-use term do you prefer to use for food that doesn't have added pesticides or hormones?
  • And I know people who live on fast food and look amazing. I'm still not tempted to try it.
  • Clean eating is that easy? Sweet!
  • ^^^This. I'm not a fan of most of them, because I prefer more whole foods, and for that much sugar/carbs, I'd rather eat something that tastes great...but they've got a long shelf life, and I have been known to keep a stash of them on hand for those times I just can't make it to lunch (or I know dinner's going to be a…
  • ^^^This is so true for me -- I gain weight at work! When I've taken just a week or two off of work, the scale drops very quickly. When I go back to work...sitting behind a desk all day is just not healthy. But it's what I've got to do for the next few years, so I have to figure out a way to make it work.
  • But it's a wonderful story; thank you for sharing. :-)
  • Yup -- once. And it better only be once. I lost 25 lbs here last year (healthfully, too -- no crash diets or unsustainable exercise plans), and gained it all back due to stress/sugar binges. That's my demon to fight, and I don't have an easy answer on that one. But I've got some good external motivation right now...I want…
  • Skipping the other responses because I'm in a rush, but take a look at the studies linking vitamin D deficiencies to a whole host of pains -- so much that it's sometimes been diagnosed as fibromyalgia. I have severe back pain due to an injury, and while physical therapy, yoga and anti-inflammatories got me to a certain…
  • When you don't say what "local" is, and your profile is locked, it makes it hard for people to know where you are... :-)
  • There's an exercise bike-type machine I see at the gym where you "pedal" with your arms. I totally agree with the folks that say water workouts -- I've done a few when mt days off and aqua-Zumba coincide (doesn't happen frequently), and those are no joke -- especially with the resistance "weights" and paddles. Plus it is…
  • Snowshoe mom, have you tried wearing your little one? The baby gets the comfort of being held close to you, you can do housework or some exercise with the baby securely snuggled up to you -- AND it's weight training of a sort, since you're doing everything with an extra 10-15 lbs strapped to your chest. :-)
  • Climbing back on the wagon, myself...I did really well, then crashed & burned at maintenance. Now I've got 20lbs or so to go, and I'm going to try to log as well as I did before. For me, it was all about getting into a routine. Hard to start, SO easy to stop...but once I get a groove going, I do much better. I'm a single…
  • Random note: if you get an immersion/stick blender, you can make some great veggie soups, then blend it all up and add spicy turkey sausage, lentils, potatoes... (kale, too, if you can handle it) -- makes a delicious soup. Then you have all the nutrition of real veggies without the texture. Just a thought.
  • If you were on the higher end of the "healthy range" according to the charts, I'd say they're just reacting poorly to change. But you say you're on the lower end of the "healthy range," so I'd ask your doc for an impartial opinion. Body issues can sneak up on you, and you may not be the most impartial observer -- depending…
  • My throat/mouth itches with some fruits & veggies; it's a mild allergic reaction to something, be it in the veggies or on them (i.e., pesticides or washing agents). If it's a severe reaction, I wouldn't play around with it, and I'd see an allergist to get tested -- it could very well be fixable. If it's mild, though, I've…
  • Whew! I only have one (although I also work outside the home), and that's enough to keep me frazzled, as much as I love her. I second the person who said join a gym with day care. Preferably day care and yoga! Drop the kids off at the nursery, and head into the yoga room for a nice chill-out session (or go pump weights if…
  • This bugs me as well as the people who have gay friends but who actively campaign against gay rights. I don't know exactly where on the line I fall, because I have people in my life I care very much about yet we disagree on some fundamental things, like certain aspects of their religion. But none of us are trying to take…
  • I think, like with so many things, it depends on the person. There are situations like the above, where trauma may play a role. So many people refuse to label themselves as bi-sexual, because they're attacked by "real" lesbians and gays as "only playing around." So they pick men or women and stick with it. And if they…
  • Agreed. And "Tolerant" also suggests the behavior is somehow wrong, but you'll put up with it. Love is love. As long as it's between consenting adults, with no abuses of power or deception, I'm happy.
  • Or... "Muscle weighs more than fat!"
  • Batch cooking is a lifesaver. Take a couple hours on your day off and make a huge batch of anything healthy that freezes well (soup is great), and freeze it in single-serving portions. Then all you have to do is grab one on your way out the door to work, and pop it in the microwave at lunch. Same goes for dinner if you're…
  • ^This. Seriously, though, no one worthy of the title "partner" should be tearing you down like that, evn if he was in perfect health. He may be struggling with his own insecurities, but that's not an excuse to treat you poorly.
  • Funny, one of my friends just wrote me about this very thing -- apparently she propositioned about 100 men without realizing it. She's in a professional exchange program in the UK, and while giving her presentation, offered her assistance to any of her new cohorts with questions on our methods. Apparently "hit me up"…
  • ^This. I have an ice-cream maker and it's SO easy to make a low-cal treat with fresh ingredients. And sometimes, if my protein count is a little low for the day, I'll throw a scoop of protein powder in there, or use greek yogurt as the base instead of almond milk.
  • I think those are great NSVs! Congrats!
