  • I'm smack dab in the middle of that group! Been here for over 18 months now and took a helluva lot more steps forward than back. Be glad to help out anyone here. Look up my profile and send along a FR if you think I can help! ...Dutch
  • Here's a slide presentation from the Furman Institute of Running and Scientific Training (FIRST). Good bullet points, IMO. www2.furman.edu/sites/first/Documents/16_oct2324.pdf‎
  • I didn't start out at 350 but I imagine I tipped the scale at over 300, if I bothered to weigh myself. Honestly I quit looking at it. I finally mustered up the courage after losing weight for a couple of months and was at 286. I now weigh 182. I'm 59 years old so you have youth on your side, even though you are starting…
  • Every time you hear or read the word "diet", that nervous twitch you developed (once you got past that 1200 calorie do-or-die syndrome) starts to appear again.
  • Anyone can look me up and send a FR if you like. Been active for 18 months now and will help where I can!
  • I'm in the same boat as the OP. Just finished the Philly marathon and want to build a good strength program while maintaining a core run program. I also run OCR's. A great topic of interest for me so I'm bookmarking this for updates.
  • 59 year old gamer here. Did em all going all the way back to the original 'Adventure' on a mainframe. Mass Effect, after the Elder Scrolls games, became my favorite but also liked the Fallout series. Skyrim....was a big downer for me. I mean, become the Arch Mage in six easy steps? Come on!! Then I discovered Demon Souls…
  • Thanks to all! All sorts of things to look into.....Dutch
  • I'm a vet too. I'll send along a FR. Look up my profile.
  • Beachbody or TF didn't do it. You did lady! I read a commitment to an exercise regimen, with an emphasis on staying focused on overall fitness, not just one particular routine. I read making a commitment to understanding and managing what you put into your body as well as what you are burning through exercise. It also…
  • I've been there. I hovered around my 209 lb limit every year for the 20 I was in. Sometimes I was able to get down in time for the semiannual weigh-in, sometimes not. After I retired I stopped having to run the PFT twice a year and my weight escalated even more...up to at least 286 (stopped looking at the scale then). I…
  • Yeah, I use both whey and soy protein. Just once a day though. Maybe up that a bit but at 70 mg of chol per serving of whey I can't add too much. Soy is high on the sodium. sigh...
  • Man, can I relate to this! MFP does it for me too. Great work guy!
  • When I started, I was similarly overwhelmed and attempted to get the numbers exact. Well as much as possible. Simply became an exercise in frustration for me. Throw in differing philosophies on nutrient balancing, etc, not to mention what I should be eating and not eating....well you know the story. For what it's worth…
  • Fitted at the New Balance store (I used to run in them exclusively) but this time around they seemed to sit up too high/rub on my lower achilles and I stopped running in them after about a month due to soreness there. I also was fitted at a running shop that sold about 5-6 brands, including Brooks. I have wide feet which…
  • I mix a cup of unflavored greek yogurt with a scoop of chocolate protein powder. (If you don't want to go with the protein powder, then I recommend getting a vanilla flavored yogurt or adding a sweetening agent.) Then I add two tablespoons of unsweetened chocolate. Only 10 calories per tablespoon! I buy the Hershey's…
  • Here's an interesting read. Black toenails may be caused, not only by ill fitting shoes or socks, but by simply training for the long run. http://www.jeffgalloway.com/training/injury_archives/black_toe.html
  • My favorite... "You wanna dance? You gotta pay the fiddler." Applies to quite a lot in life, really.
  • I'm training for the Philly Marathon too. Last marathon I ran was 25 years ago! I got in 14 miles last weekend so I have a long way to go. I'm also going to do the Savage Race in Pennsylvania on Sep 14th. Best of luck to you!!
  • FR sent. Been there done that too.
  • bump to see if there is any late interest
  • My grandmother put it like this "You wanna lose weight? 100% guaranteed? Stop eating garbage, get off your *kitten* and do something!" Smart lady. Just wish I had listened to her earlier.
  • I'll send along a FR and if anyone wants to add me, please do. Check my profile, it's public. No BS here or applauding every time you you meet your calorie goal. Just honest support when needed and comradery anytime. Been doing this for well over a year now, hit a serious 4-5 month plateau but kept with it. I run obstacle…
  • I cover every square millimeter of the top of the cooked oatmeal in my bowl with cinnamon. Add an ounce of crushed walnuts. Then a banana or raisins or other fruit. Instead of milk I use 1/2 cup of unsweetened applesauce.
  • Need a boost of potassium? Try low sodium (not the regular stuff) V8 juice. 8 ounces has over a 1000 mg.

  • I've been an off and on runner for over 25 years. In fact 25 years ago, I ran a marathon at an 8:53 pace (about 7 mph). Well I gained a crap load of weight and found MFP over a year ago as a result. I ran a 5K last October at about a 12 minute pace (5 mph). I was real happy with it because I finished! As of today, my best…
  • Well I'm an oldie (but goodie). Like many boomers, I grew up on regular old cow's milk. I'm not sure there was any choice back then regarding fat content. Switched to skim milk when I had kids and my wife (at the time) decided we were going to set a good example. Drank and used that for maybe 30 years or so. I joined MFP a…
  • 58 here. Still have a few pounds to go, then work on body fat %. Caution, my body says 58, my brain and soul wannabe 28. All are invited to check my profile and send a FR if interested.
  • I really don't think of it as "whole" food, but rather "good" food. That's probably just semantics, though. If you're just tracking a few items (protein, carbs, and fat, for example) you are really cutting yourself short. It was mentioned before about fast foods having ingredients that encourage bad eating habits. Many…
