I can factually say this from my own experience, it's not just about calories, it's about what you eat and don't eat. Processed foods are not good for weight loss... My advice, eat lots of unprocessed fruit, vegetables, some nuts, seeds but nuts and seeds in moderation, and not roasted or salted... I've lost 85 pounds this…

I love it on beefsteak tomatoes, with a dash of sea salt... Yum... My favorite meal... Avocados are high in fat, and it can be substituted for even olive oil in cold dressing recipes. Great on a veggie sandwich too...

What do you eat? I feel what you eat is really more important than just calories. I think if you're eating a lot of processed, nutrient deficient foods, your body will be starving for nutrients, and your body will want you to eat more food, in an attempt to get the nutrients your body needs. I haven't researched this, but I should since I have the same concerns. Jon Gabriel lost like 240 pounds, and didn't have to have surgery to remove loose skin. I freeze bananas... Peal, wrap in plastic film. They are great in smoothies, and a mock ice cream using a food processor, just add the flavorings you want and process and eat...
