I hate to say it, but a big part of the problem seems to be how we educate our doctors. And I have to say, I will never understand why it's so difficult to get into medical school... we'd be better off if there were more doctors - more supply would mean more time to meet with patients due to reduced patient load, etc. Of…

Sorry, my friend, no agenda. Just frustrated that the people who are supposed to be well trained to give us medical advice blow it with such painful frequency - supported by many of the other posts on this thread. And you know what you call enough anecdotes? Data.

There was no specific reason called out, and, again, my friend is in good shape. Exercises a lot, etc. No joint pain or anything like that. Just mindless adherence to the BMI chart.
-
Lol, he's a friend, not my husband. I am a husband to a female of the opposite sex. :) But YES, I totally agree with what you're saying about the BMI. It kills me that these people are supposed to be among the most educated in our society, and yet they apply so little critical thinking. I mean, all it takes is 3rd grade…

Mainstream medicine - this guy isn't an outlyer. About 7 years ago, I saw a doctor because I had backpain. He took a quick x-ray and tried to schedule spinal surgery. I told him 'hold on there,' and left. Basically, I needed to get in better shape and wear better shoes. I dropped 30 pounds, and the backpain mysteriously…

This.

Starting Strength - completely agree. Great book.

This. An important aspect, though, is the type of lifting you do. These days, it's been pretty well established that multiple joint weight lifting (squats, deadlifts, etc. - pretty much the Olympic and power lifting exercises) have the most positive impact. Start low, start slow, and grow. (And yes, lose fat.) It's ok to…

My best food experience was back in college, involving Kahlua, hot fudge, whipped cream, and a co-ed...

Well there's a depressing thought...

He is the best possible thing that could have happened to the Obama campaign.

Awesome.

I don't have binge days, but everyone is different. I remember when I first started to control my food intake the idea of a binge day was very appealing - there was something to look forward to as a reward for being good all week. But as my attitude about why I was doing what I was doing changed, the need/desire for binge…

I'm trying the paleo/primal food approach, and so far it's been great. I don't miss the gluten/grains at all these days, and although I occasionally slip on the dairy, I really don't miss that either. And it's working.

I like spiders, but yeah, I'd go to war if that happened. In general, I don't kill spiders themselves, but if I find an egg sack someplace (mostly the garage) it goes outside immediately.
-
So yeah, that's gross, no doubt. But I live in the woods, and I have spiders in my house all the time - I don't even bother with them. And I just like sleep way too much to ever give it up. Plus, spiders are really cool. That little guy must have lost his way - how weird that they didn't try to identify what type it was.…

I have this thing called Meniere's syndrome, which mucks with the sodium/potassium levels in your inner ear and causes vertigo if sodium gets too high. So, I'm pretty much off salt entirely at this point (obviously getting a little, since its already in most foods to some degree). 1. No processed food - if it comes in a…

That's like the best summary I've ever seen.

Agree with this... And this... (combined for efficiency...)

I'd say keep the fruit and cut out the bread. Fruit is way better for you, and comparitively fewer calories overall than bread/oatmeal/etc. Agree with the above: don't bother tracking sugar separately - track carbs. And definitely track your protein!
-
Agree

And this ^^ is really funny.

^^This^^ is what I do. Yes, you can start on Sunday instead of Monday if you want, and alternate Mon-Wed-Fri with Sun-Tues-Thur and then Sat-Mon-Wed, etc.; but I prefer just taking the weekends off as recover days and then hitting hard again on Monday morning. Plus, Tuesday mornings are trash days, which is at least a…

I firmly believe the only scales that are worth anything are balance scales, like the ones you see in the doctor's office. They're available for consumer purchase, but they're not cheap. Seca is the name I've seen most often.

I can't quite tell what the actual diet is... is it essentially either 2 or 4 days of fasting a week? (Ignoring the ear thing, who the heck knows about that stuff)
-
I highly doubt it's the water. From the sounds of it, you're over-working your abs and not letting them recover. Essentially, while they're still healing from your previous workout, you hit them again, and they're trying to tell you to knock it off - and from the pain you're describing, it's 'damaged' pain you're feeling,…

I think this one is my favorite - you couldn't pay someone to make that perfect an expression.

For most games, I'm really not a fan of PVP, but Eve might be different. I've never had the patience to be a munchkin around tweaking every little attribute so that I can beat other players in an arena type setting - just not my style. I like playing games and making up characters that I enjoy playing. Area type battles…

Most doctors don't know jack about nutrition.

With Eve, is there any downside to not logging in? (Other than not getting your fix?) E.g., some games (many mobile games, for instance) will ding you if you don't log in - your stuff will deteriorate because you're not maintaining it. But if it's just a question of not maximizing your growth, then I can handle that.
