  • What hekla90 said. The readout probably tagged as abnormal because anything less than 60 bpm is technically bradycardia (slow heart rate). As long as the rest of the readout was normal and your HR doesn't drop below 50 or drop during exercise, there shouldn't be anything to worry about (according to my cardiopulmonary…
  • I'm not vegan, but I quit eating beef and pork this year, and I hope to cut out chicken and dairy by the beginning of next year (baby steps). I'm probably still going to eat seafood and eggs, though. I've found Cooking Light is a good resource for recipes that my husband and I both enjoy, and a lot of their calorie and…
  • It's easier to get a calorie deficit by eating less than by exercising. Not that exercising isn't important to overall body health, but it's easier to cut out 500 calories worth of junk or other unhealthy foods each day than to burn that same amount through exercise.
  • Psst: It's an unfertilized egg, so it's not an abortion. It's more like what we women do every month.
  • I second compression sleeves. When I trained for my first marathon, my shins were always so tender, the slightest brush against them would cause me excruciating pain. The second time around, I used compression sleeves and had no problems. Mine are by Zensah, I think. Picked them up at my local running store.
  • Don't dismiss heat rash just because it's cold. You could be curled up in a certain way at night, under the covers, that causes the skin to be warm in that crease. That's just my thought since you say it always presents in the morning.
  • Nonsense. Just shower with an anti-bacterial soap after every workout and make sure you wash your gym clothes in hot water after each workout.
  • Looks like it's in a crease on your neck, so maybe it's just heat rash. Since hydrocortisone isn't working, try diaper rash ointment (the white kind, not the clear kind) and see if that doesn't dry it out.
  • After Christmas is the time of year to hit up your local bike store for a good deal on a bike. They'll be clearing out the previous season models to make room for the new ones (like a car dealership), so you're likely to get good discounts. Plus, a lot of local bike stores take trade-ins, so they sell those previously…
  • Do one more day of running the 5k distance at whatever speed you need to be able to go the whole distance. If that means you have to drop the elliptical day, then do so. Then work on that 5 minutes slow / 2 minutes fast until you can get it to 5 minutes fast / 2 minutes slow. I think that would be enough to get you where…
  • Golf ball/tennis ball/frozen soda bottle for stretching the fascia under your foot, and then read up on barefoot/minimalist running and why the shoes we wear cause all kinds of problems with our feet. I'm NOT recommending you run barefoot, just that you think about how orthotics and other types of shoes restrict the…
  • I do triathlons, so I got the 910xt because it's one of only two you can swim with it. Sometimes it's information overload though. If I were you, I'd visit the Garmin website (http://www.garmin.com/us/products/intosports) and compare devices. See what does what you want (are you just looking to track mileage, or are you…
  • For what it's worth, in Mizunos, Asics and the traditional Nike running shoes, I wear a full size larger than my street shoe. But the minimalist shoes I've been wearing lately - Nike Free, Reebok RealFlex and Brooks Pure Flow – are the same size as my street shoe. Also, I went to a specialty running store when I first…
  • It doesn't matter. If you're trying to lose a pound a week (3500 calories), you could have a deficit of 500 calories per day for 7 days OR a deficit of 750 for 3 days and 312.5 for 4 days. As long as your weekly total is 3500, you can count those calories on whatever day you like and still lose that pound.
  • I get them too. I suspect it's one of two things: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cholinergic_urticaria or http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exercise_urticaria. Since I get them in the summer and in the winter, but not every time I work out, I'm stumped about which of the two options it could be. I lean towards the first because I…
