  • Does anyone know how the law applies in cases of posting material to a discussion boards for critique and analysis? 17 U.S.C. § 107 Notwithstanding the provisions of sections 17 U.S.C. § 106 and 17 U.S.C. § 106A, the fair use of a copyrighted work, including such use by reproduction in copies or phonorecords or by any…
  • Oxidation makes the engine run. :)
  • The problem with "a calorie is a calorie" is that it does not account for the synergistic effects of selecting the wrong type of calories. For example, when I eat my spinach salad and lean turkey, I feel satiated and do not require additional calories. However, when I eat even one single homemade sugar cookie, it sets off…
  • This is why I like to graph my weight measurements. Then I can see if the trend is actually upward, or if it is only doing the typical "sawtooth" pattern of weight loss. As with your stock investments, watch the long trends and ignore the daily fluctuations.
  • Pound for pound, kettlebells weight *exactly* the same as dumbells. :) But also, kettlebells look cooler and are easier to hold onto. And at Wal-Mart, they are like $10. Buy some for weight lifting fun and enjoyment.
  • I normally use chocolate whey protein with water, but I add some unsweetened cocoa and cinnamon. I tried milk once but it didn't taste much different and I didn't need the extra calories.
  • I just wanted to point out that the Honeycrisp apple is the most amazingly awesome apple ever. Because the season is so short, I hoard them and keep them refrigerated , trying to stretch the supply into January. That's all. As you were.
  • This.
  • If the weight never came off but you dropped 6 sizes (not sure of your size right now), would that be good or bad? I guess I'm wondering why you chose weight as your goal. Maybe it should be size reduction. Sounds like you are making excellent progress in improving your fitness level.
  • Agree with all the others about water caused by extra salt. Remember that 3 pounds is about a liter and a half of water. Not really a lot over the coarse of the day. Easy to get that much extra from salty (but yummy!) pizza. Remain calm. Life is good. You are doing well. :)
  • The sound of your feet on pavement (or dirt). :) I never run with music. Too distracting and the sweat ruins earbuds.
  • Going to bed hungry just makes me miserable and sends my body into starvation mode (i.e. I want to eat everything in the fridge when I wake up). If I am hungry before bed, I make sure I have a glass of water (usually low on that anyway), and then have an ounce of cheese, or chicken, or even 5 mini-pretzels. The number of…
  • Is this doable? It depends. I trained for my first half marathon with little running experience. But it depends on your health and the aggressiveness of your training. Hard training for a novice runner can get you injured easily. Before you start, check with your physician. This is not a simple event for a new runner. Make…
  • There's lots things that cause stomach issues for us runners (some already mentioned above). You may need to try several things to precisely isolate what troubles you. First, keep track of what you eat and when you eat, before your run. Some things digest better than others. For me, I can eat yogurt and light carbs (bread…
  • I run all year round and use a headlamp when running at night or early morning. Marathon training sometimes requires a longer run after work in summer, when it's starting to get dark earlier. I also do a lot of hiking and camping where a headlight is critical for those night hikes and setting up in the dark. Handling a…
  • Yes, typically I will set aside one day a week to eat an entire chocolate cake. With whipped cream. :) Seriously, you can "cheat" all you want. It's your life, your diet. Eat what you think you need to eat to maintain your health.
  • I weigh myself every day because I like to graph it and see the daily fluctuations and the moving 7-day average.
  • Conversion to EPA is relatively high, while conversion to DHA is quite low actually (but I suspect you already knew that). Fish and seafood related sources are still your best source for DHA, and then only because there is algae for them to eat. Can't eat fish? Then you get to eat the algae. Yum. If DHA is so essential to…
  • I add two heaping tablespoons to my cereal in the morning. Good stuff. You need to refrigerate after opening or it turns bitter.
  • Exactly. MFP does not distinguish between cane sugar (sucrose) and fruit sugar (fructose). I watch the sugar just because I don't want my carbs to be all simple carbs. I personally want complex carbs because they help me more with distance running. And also, jelly beans and M&M's can ruin my diet. Need to watch those (from…

  • 100 cals of Lindt 90% (about 2 squares), every day. :)
  • Maybe acid reflux? Try an antacid (e.g. Tums) and see if it helps. Also, could it be an allergy?
  • Yes, you definitely need a rest day during the week. You may need two depending on your level of running and your age. Running at high intensity every day, without rest, is an invite for an injury.
  • Definitely agree with checking out Hal Higdon's training plans. I've used them for many years. You'll find that the advanced plans will include interval training, pace runs, and tempo runs. I've found all of these helpful for increasing my speed. Another thing that helped was entering more races. Running a 5K every month…
  • Which is why I said "usually". When it says "Chicken, breast, roasted", I weight it cooked. :)
