I'm actually a part of a running group, Black Girls RUN and our local chapter has a Fall/Winter Challenge going on right now which is similar to the one you mentioned in your original post. It is very fun and keeps every one accountable. Good luck with your fitness challenge.

I use RunKeeper. Only once did I have a problem with it connecting. Of course that was during my first half marathon:( But Overall, I've had no problems. Very user-friendly.

This is not unreasonable. I get to the gym at 4:30am to workout before work. It really is a great way to start the day.

I typically drink 100 ounces per day which helps me not to overeat. Plus I workout a lot and I must stay hydrated. You just have to listen to your body.
