i think they mean that we cant see your profile/diary etc because you have them set to private so we know nothing about you or your goals to make people want to add you :)

i agree, its easier with friends! ive just started out myself so sometimes i need a little kick in the butt to keep me moving in the right direction instead of getting mad that its not working as fast as i want it to :)
