  • Great article. This paragraph is killer, and is a big part of why I eliminate bread, rice, pasta from my diet... all that bland food telling my brain to eat more! "This contradiction is known as “sensory-specific satiety.” In lay terms, it is the tendency for big, distinct flavors to overwhelm the brain, which responds by…
  • I fry my eggs in coconut oil, and use an MFP entry that says "Eggs Fried in Coconut Oil". Works for me. I actually use just about 1/2 tsp of oil, so I figure it it's a cal overestimate, that's fine, since I probably underestimate other things.
  • Eat some vegetables. Maybe with some meat.
  • Just popping in to say I love the idea of a blueberry-flavored beef protein. Who wouldn't! -- shared by someone who needs to up her protein but doesn't like to drink food.
  • I started Crossfit in January. My box is top notch in terms of coaching. The head coach came from Reebok's HQ which is one of the top CF affiliates around. At every class, there are at least 3 coaches on the floor. I feel like I get LOTS of coaching on every move. And still, their eyes can't be on me every moment, and it…
  • LOL. Cue the sentimental music, maybe Stevie Wonder singing Ebony and Ivory... might there ever be a way that IIFYM'ers and Paleo'ers can get along? It's true that many Paleo/Primal people can get evangelical about how what they eat makes such a difference. It's because for many (most, even) they feel such a big physical…
  • I personally think it's a great approach. I basically follow it, except I layer restrictions on top. I do that because I know there are some foods that trigger unhealthy eating behaviors in me, or that make me feel bloated or cause an allergic reaction, and I do better mentally to eliminate them then moderate them. This…
  • First, congrats on losing 97 lbs!!! woot woot. I'm guilty of assuming that some IIFYM'ers are eating crap all day, because that's the way many of the posts come off. I think it's because some IIFYM'ers seem to always attack people who post about eating clean/whole foods or who ask about low-carb or Paleo. Every so often…
  • I felt really lethargic and grumpy from day 2 to 10. I also was pretty new to MFP and eating 1200 cal or under because I didn't know better, and I was not eating much fat. So I think I was making myself feel worse. But at day 11, a switch flipped and I felt great. It was around that same time I upped my cals to 1400 and…
  • Just wait until you get pregnant. Then you have to drink 64 oz a water a day with a baby crushing your bladder. And kicking you. Inside. Actually, it's awesome.
  • LOL. When I saw the post title, I was about to reply "Jicama Home Fries".
  • Interesting. The original article says nothing, really, and I wouldn't base any decisions on it (especially since I'm not at risk for prostate cancer). But the actual study says something interesting, and if I did have elevated PCa I would take note, macros and cals be damned. Here's the abstract:…
  • That's what I thought, so I was surprised that this calculator upped calories for work days.
  • I eat Paleo and follow lots of Paleo blogs, and one thing that seems to be an common thread is the number of women who suffer from both thyroid issues like Hashimoto's or Graves, and who are gluten sensitive/celiac. The story often goes like this... Woman suffers... finally gets diagnosed with Hashimoto's/Graves disease.…
  • If you avoid processed foods, you can pretty much stop worrying about your sodium. I found that since I don't get salt from processed stuff, I can afford to actually flavor my food with some nice sea salt blends. They add flavor and brighten meals in a way that salty packaged stuff doesn't.
  • I only went back about a week, but I saw LOTS of hot dogs and almost no veggies. Yes, you're keeping your calories on the low end, but you're eating a pretty repetitive set of foods. It looked pretty boring to me and hard to sustain. Even though it's protein and low cal/carb, 3 or 4 hot dogs is not a healthy meal. If it…
  • My doc always says, "No one gets diabetes from eating too many vegetables". That's why I replace grains and legumes with veg and fat. I can consume a whole lot more tasty food for the calories.
  • You can look at my diary. I don't eat grains. I was traveling last week on a biz trip and didn't log, so just go back one week and I've been logging since July. I'm not a huge fan of salads... they bore me, but I like eating raw veggies separately. Weird, I know. But I usually pack 3-4 oz protein often leftover from…
  • Sigh. Beans and peanuts. This is what people always point out that they don't like about Paleo. I personally don't see what the fuss is about. What am I missing if I eliminate beans? Beans are a good source fiber. Ok, so I eat several servings of veggies/fruit to get fiber in my diet. That's going to be more nutritious for…
  • My diary is set to 1400, but I usually eat between 1400-1500 each day. That meal probably was truly high if it was at Ted's... everything is slathered in butter, probably. Don't consider that day to be typical... you're not going to eat at Ted's everyday. Just learn and move on. On a regular day, you won't have problems…
  • To OP... there are TONS of recipes for Paleo. Google anything + Paleo and you'll get great hits. My favorites: www.nomnompaleo.com www.paleomg.com www.civilizedcavemancooking.com (but he makes toooo many treats for me) www.theclothesmakethegirl.com www.health-bent.com www.thefoodie.com (an aggregation site) Enjoy.
  • Point to examples, please. Otherwise people only see you snark with your nose in the air. Since you troll to discredit every Paleo/Primal post on here, you ought to at least give evidence for your disdain.
  • I know, right? I'm the only one in my family and circle of friends who eats gluten-free, so no one I know would even get the jokes in the video.
  • That's because humans began cultivating grains around 10,000 BC give or take a millennium. But homo sapiens in the form of anatomically modern humans have been around for about 200,000 years as hunter gatherers until about 10,000 BC (more or less, depending on the part of the world). Personally, I don't get caught up in…
  • I've been eating Primal since July. When I first started, I also felt week and foggy-brained, and it was a combination of adjusting to reduced sugar (carb flu) AND not eating enough calories (I was following the stupid 1200 MFP directive). Once I realized that I really wasn't eating enough and bumped up my cals I felt much…
  • I'd say start with the medium box for a few weeks and see how it lasts. You can always change the size. I change mine all the time, depending on what I've still got left or not. Of course, if you do juicing or lots of smoothies, you might want a bigger box. I try to buy enough veg so I can make something every night for…
  • I debated between door-to-door organics and another service in my area. I decided to go with the other service, I think because they seemed a little more flexible in customizing the produce boxes. I've been very happy getting it delivered. The produce is great, service is great, and I get my deliveries on Fridays so I'm…
  • This is a good one to talk to your pastor about. Many assume that passage is means it's OK to eat "unclean" meat. But some believe it's really a discussion about people... whether or not there are "unclean" people, and it gets into whether or not Jews should be hanging with Gentiles. See, you can choose to read it…
  • Wow. That adds a whole level of complexity to diet choices for you. As a Jewish, atheist, skeptic, and scientist, I can't relate to your conundrum at all. But... you could think to yourself... What Would Jesus Eat? I doubt the answer would be Dairy Queen or McD's. Ah... The power of Google... "What Would Jesus Eat" --->…
