All you need is a caloric deficit. Try not to be discouraged. That deficit can come from food intake alone. Now you may only become a smaller version of who you are now. Which that may or may not look bad to you. Once you can start anaerobic exercises do so to improve the look of the weight loss.

Not all food is equal maybe. Calories are just calories. 300 calories of chicken and 300 calories of M&M's is still 300 calories. Nice try though.

I will give a nod and a smile as well. I don't like talking to much while in the gym. There are a few guys that I may exchange a few good mornings with. One of which is an older guy who I swear only comes to the gym to train his jawbone because it is the only thing moving while he is there.

I would also suggest whenever you can, join another gym. I gym with no squat rack at all is no gym. But, that's just me.

Go with the goblet squat, split squat, or bulgarian squat as some may have already said. The smith machine has it's place in a routine. Squats IMO is not one of them. Google any of these.

You can always add more protein to your day by editing your goals if it bothers you. I can't see your diet to see how much you actually ate or how much is suggested that you eat. Eating more protein can help with hunger.
